1 Hubsan H501S User Documentation The purpose of this document is to record for easy reference the user knowledge base of the Hubsan H501S quadcopter. This is a work in progress and is intended to be edited by experienced and knowledgeable users. 3 Out of the Box Stock Experience Unpacking Upon receiving your Quad, inspect the box for damage and take photos if any is seen. Commonly, the box is slightly damaged but the contents are just fine. User reported damage has included transmitter (TX) screen damage, and the solution agreed on was for the user to open the TX and replace the screen with a new one sent by the seller. Quad checkout Gaze in excitement at the quad s beauty. Once the unit is out, A and B props can be attached. With the props attached, the motors are easy to manually spin to check the bearing condition. Users have reported that occasionally one or more motors have arrived with a slight clicking sound when spun. This is OK and experience shows that this does not significantly impact the motor performance. After several flights, all of the motors will demonstrate a slight clicking noise when manually spun. You may also notice that some of the motors may have slightly stronger magnets than others. This also does not materially affect the unit s performance, and is just the nature of this price/performance level. Charger checkout Read through the manual and begin charging the included battery. NOTE: some users have reported that the non hubsan branded charger sometimes included with the quad does not appropriately stop charging at 8.4V (4.2V per cell). If left to continue charging in this state, it will degrade the battery and may risk fire. If your charger continues charging past 3 hours, you should check the voltage on the battery power terminal with a multimeter. Problematic chargers have induced 10 12V across the battery once it has charged. If you find this, take photos and immediately contact the seller.

4 TX Batteries The TX will go through high quality alkaline batteries about every 2 3 flights. Consider using lithium or NiMH batteries, or if your skills allow, converting it to use a 2S LiPo battery (see mods section). Operational Recommendations If the quad suddenly begins to ascend in altitude hold mode or GPS mode, do not hold the throttle at the bottom for more than two seconds if no response is observed, as the quad may enter a manual mode failsafe. Often, the quad will stop ascending on its own after a few seconds. Do not fly nearby transmission lines, this may interfere with radio control and cause unexpected behavior. No sharp turns in altitude hold mode. Do not perform the motor arm/disarm operation during flight: the motors will shutdown and the quad will fall. Disassembly Troubleshooting

7 RX Firmware version Features V1.2.3 Currently Hubsan recommends this one (at least on Quad running FW) Might limit altitude to 120 meters. v1.2.9 Often the version on band new H501S. Might be required for higher altitude limit?

8 Mods TX LiPo Battery Mod There are a few youtube videos showing the TX battery mod and they give you a good overview of what has to be done. It is assumed that you know how to solder. If not, look at some tutorials and practice first. I used a ZOP Power 2S 1500mAH battery and it just fits in the unit. You ll want to buy a connector for the TX side to hook up to the battery, I went with the standard charger connector as the TX current draw isn t very high by LiPo standards. Note that a buck voltage converter IS NOT NECESSARY with batteries 12V or less as there is already one built in to the TX. Adding an additional one as shown in one youtube video is a waste of space and power.

9 NOTE: if connecting to the charging balance plug, insulate the middle pin of the connector on the TX side as it is unused. NOTE: The TX has two different battery fuel gauge ranges for its battery indicator V is the range it uses with alkaline batteries V is the range it uses with LiPo and LiIon batteries. Depending on the voltage that it receives when it is powered up, it will smartly auto detect the range to use for the battery fuel gauge and its automatic screen shut off.
