Recording Audio from our Sound Systems (Sanctuary or Social Hall) Pieces needed Audio bridge (in the Tech cabinet, Misc box): Behringer U-Control, UCA202 RCA cables (in the U-Control box) red & white Headphones and/or mouse (in the Misc box) Classroom1 Laptop (in Tech cabinet): this is the only the laptop that has the needed U-Control drivers installed. Contact Tech if you need the drivers installed on other laptops. Location Notes To record audio from both the Sanctuary and Social Hall You will record audio from the S/H sound system The Sanctuary & Social Hall sound systems must be both turned on The Sanctuary receiver (top left on the S/H sound system) must also be turned on. All microphones (if turned on) and the keyboard will be recorded. To record audio from the Sanctuary only You will record audio from the Sanctuary sound system The Sanctuary sound system must be turned on. The S/H sound system is not needed. To record audio from the Social Hall only You will record audio from the S/H sound system The Social Hall sound system must be turned on. The speaker must be using one of the S/H microphones. The Sanctuary sound system is not needed. Choir Recording To properly record the choir, you must have a mic dedicated (and turned on) for them.
Connecting the components Sanctuary Connect the red & white rca cables (from the bridge) into the same-color REC OUT receptacles on the mixer Output level Social Hall Connect the red & white rca cables (from the bridge) into the same-color REC OUT receptacles on the mixer. Output level
Set up the laptop next to the sound system equipment. Plug the laptop s power cord into the power strip and turn on the laptop. Choose the Classroom1 account: pw is shalomshalom Plug the usb cable from the bridge into an available port on the laptop (right side). A light on the bridge will turn green showing it is recognized and powered-on. USB Bridge Headphones Turn on the sound system (power strip first; amplifier second). The audio system is now connected to the laptop. There is a usb-mouse (Misc box) which can be used. For monitoring the recording, there is a headphone (Misc box) which can be plugged into the laptop s mini-port.
Recording audio Find the Audacity shortcut on the desktop and double-click on it. Audacity The Audacity screen is below. Click on Record to begin recording. Click on Stop to stop recording. Stop Recording Start Recording The recording is stored in a temporary work folder until you Export the file.
As the sound is being recorded, the Audacity screen will show the recording (in blue below). Recording notes The classroom laptop can store over 700 hrs of audio. This allows you to begin the recording early and let it run for some time afterwards in order to not miss any part of the session. The pre and post portions can easily be removed in post-processing.. The recording graph (input level) may appear to be small/shrunk rather than filling the screen-halves from top to bottom. This is normal and can be easily adjusted during post-processing. It is better to have the input level lower since raising input levels to/near their maximum can result in unrecoverable audio clipping and/or distortion. The input level is adjusted via the mixer: o the output level control will raise or lower the entire sound level for all mics o individual gain controls can raise or lower the sound level for a specific mic An explanation of recording best practices can be found within the Audacity help documentation. You can use Audacity for post-processing. A how-to about post-processing, editing, adjusting the sound levels can be found in the Audacity help documentation.
Saving the Recording 1. Stop the recording. 2. Click on File (top left), then Export (about half-way down). 3. An Export File window will appear (below). 4. Choose a folder (it should default to audio_recordings). 5. Give the recording a File name in the empty box.
6. Save as type : MP3 Files should be the default. If it is not, choose mp3 from the drop down and hit the Save button. 7. An Edit Metadata window will appear merely hit the OK button. Nothing need be entered here. 8. Wait for Audacity to save the recording (a save-file box will eventually close). It will take about 1 minute to save for every 12 minutes of recording time. 9. You may now close Audacity. It will ask Save changes before closing? - Hit the No button. Shutting Down Disconnect the cables & bridge and store them in the box. Turn off the sound system(s): amplifier first, power strip second. Please be aware that the raw audio file will consume about 70M per hour of recording time. Plug in a USB-stick and copy the recording to it for offsite processing. Shut down the laptop, disconnect the power cord, store in its bag and put it back into the Tech cabinet. Store the bridge, cables and any other equipment that was used in the Tech cabinet within the small Misc box on the top shelf, right.
