In case of damage, DO NOT use. Contact carrier/invacare for further instructions. Safety Summary To ensure the safe operation of the Invacare Polaris EX CPAP, these instructions MUST be followed: WARNING DO NOT operate this equipment without first reading and understanding this instruction sheet. If you are unable to understand the warnings, cautions and instructions, contact your healthcare professional, dealer or technical personnel if applicable before attempting to operate this equipment - otherwise, injury or damage may occur. CAUTION To ensure proper operation of the compliance clock, the Invacare Polaris EX CPAP should be left plugged in for 12 hours after initial programming. 2 Starting the Polaris EX Unit NOTE: For this procedure, refer to FIGURE 2, FIGURE 3, and FIGURE Plug the Polaris EX CPAP unit power cord into a 120 VAC (60 Hz) outlet. 2. The Polaris EX power indicator light will illuminate and the software version number will appear on the LCD display window for approximately one second. Refer to FIGURE 2. V E R S I O N # #. # # FIGURE 2 3. The LCD display window will next display the current CPAP setting and Ramp Timer setting for approximately two (2) seconds. If the Ramp Timer setting is greater than zero, a ramp icon ( ) will also be displayed (display units are in cmh 2 0). Refer to FIGURE 3. C P A P 1 4 R A M P 2 0 FIGURE 3 4. Finally, STANDBY will appear on the LCD display window. Refer to FIGURE 4. S T A N D - B Y FIGURE 4 NOTE: The LCD window brightness is dimmed when no button is pressed for 30 seconds. To restore original brightness press any button. NOTE: Heated Humidifier On/Off button is only active when the option is installed. Error Code Display NOTE: For this procedure, refer to FIGURE If an internal component failure is detected, the blower will immediately shut off. ERROR CODE and a 3 digit number will appear in the LCD window. For example, if the error code is 532, then ERROR CODE 532 will be displayed on the LCD display. 2. Unplug the unit and plug it back in. 3 Programming Instructions Enabling the Clinician Set-Up Mode 1. Ensure STANDBY appears in the LCD display window. 2. Press and hold down the Up ( ) and Down ( ) buttons at the same time for four seconds or longer to start the Clinician Set up mode. 3. A menu will appear with access to Set up mode and Full Compliance mode. 4. Access Set up mode by pressing the Up ( ) button. 5. Press the Enter button to cycle through the Set up mode settings. 6. Press the Up ( ) or Down ( ) buttons to change settings. 7. After a change is made, press the Enter button to confirm the change and proceed to the next setting. NOTE: If a momentary power interruption occurs during the Set up mode, no changes will be saved. NOTE: If no button is pressed for two minutes or more, the unit automatically exits Set up mode and returns to Standby mode. No changes will be saved. NOTE: If cycle is incomplete, no changes will be saved. Adjusting the CPAP Therapy Pressures 1. Enable the Clinician Set up mode. Refer to Enabling the Clinician Set Up Mode. 2. CPAP PRESSURE will appear on the LCD display window and the current CPAP setting will be highlighted. 3. Press the Up ( ) or Down ( ) buttons to increase or decrease CPAP setting by one cmh 2 O. 4. Press the Enter button to confirm the CPAP setting. Fine Pressure Adjustment NOTE: The Fine Pressure Adjustment feature allows the clinician to adjust the therapy pressures in intervals of 0.1 cmh 2 O over a range of 1 cmh 2 O to +1 cmh 2 O. The default setting for this feature is 0.0 cmh 2 O and will default to this setting if the CPAP therapy pressures are changed. 1. Enable the Clinician Set up mode (if not already in Clinician Set up mode). Refer to Enabling the Clinician Set Up Mode. 2. Repeatedly press the Enter button until the display shows Fine Press Adj. 3. Press the Up ( ) or Down ( ) buttons to increase or decrease the fine pressure adjustment in intervals of 0.1 cmh 2 O. 4. 4 NOTE: If a change to the fine pressure adjustment has been made, it is recommended that the clinician check the CPAP pressure delivered to the patient to ensure proper therapy pressure is obtained. Adjusting the CPAP Altitude Settings 1. Enable the Clinician Set up mode (if not already in Clinician Set up Mode). Refer to Enabling the Clinician Set Up Mode on page Repeatedly press the Enter button until the display shows HIGH ALTITUDE?. NOTE: A High Altitude is defined as an altitude of 1,500 feet or more above sea level. 3. Press the Up ( ) or Down ( ) buttons to toggle between YES or NO. 4. Press the Enter button to set the selection. Adjusting the Ramp Timer Feature 1. Enable the Clinician Set up mode (if not already in Clinician Set up mode). Refer to Enabling the Clinician Set Up Mode on page Press the Enter button until the display shows the RAMP timer setting. 3. Press the Up ( ) or Down ( ) buttons to increase or decrease the current RAMP TIMER setting. NOTE: If the CPAP setting is changed and the RAMP timer is already greater than zero, the RAMP start pressure will be updated to equal one half the CPAP therapy and fine pressure adjustment pressure settings. NOTE: The RAMP therapy delay timer may be set to 0, 5, 10, 20, or 30 minutes. 4. Press the Enter button. If the RAMP timer setting is not set to zero, then the new RAMP timer setting will be accepted and the RAMP start pressure will be displayed on the LCD display window. If the RAMP timer setting is set to zero, there will be no option to select the RAMP start pressure. 5. Press the Up ( ) or Down ( ) button to increase or decrease the RAMP start pressure as desired. 6. Press the Enter button to confirm the RAMP start pressure. Adjusting SoftX (Exhalation Unloading) Setting or Change to Standard CPAP 1. Enable the Clinician Set up mode (if not already in Clinician Set up mode). Refer to Enabling the Clinician Set Up Mode on page Press the Enter button until SoftX (exhalation unloading) setting is displayed on the LCD display window. 3. Press the Up ( ) or Down ( ) button to scroll through the SoftX settings. 4. Press the Enter button to set the SoftX setting. SoftX adjustment may also be made via the User mode. 5 Setting the Current Date 1. Enable the Clinician Set up mode (if not already in Clinician Set up mode). Refer to Enabling the Clinician Set Up Mode on page Press the Enter button until the current date and time are displayed on the LCD display window in MM DD YY (Month Day Year) and HH:MM (Hour:Minute) format and the month (MM) value is flashing. 3. Press the Up ( ) or Down ( ) button to increase or decrease the month (MM) value. 4. Press the Enter button to set the month (MM) value to the displayed value. The day value will flash. 5. Repeat STEPS 2 and 3 to set the day (DD) and year (YY) values. Setting the Current Time 1. Enable the Clinician Set up mode (if not already in Set up mode). Refer to Enabling the Clinician Set Up Mode on page Press the Enter button until the current date and time are displayed on the LCD display window in MM DD YY (Month Day Year) and HH:MM (Hour:Minute) format and the hour value (HH) is flashing. 3. Press the Up ( ) or Down ( ) buttons to increase or decrease the hour (HH) value. NOTE: There is no AM or PM adjustment. The hour value is based on a 24 hr. clock, e.g., 6:33 PM is 18: Press the Enter button to set the hour (HH) value to the displayed value. The minute (MM) value will flash. 5. Repeat STEPS 3 and 4 to set the minute (MM) value. 6. A confirmation screen will appear. 7. Press the Up ( ) button to update the unit s real time clock with the new date and time. The compliance start date will not be affected. Clearing the Compliance Data 1. Enable the Clinician Set up mode (if not already in Clinician Set up mode). Refer to Enabling the Clinician Set Up Mode on page Press the Enter button until the display shows the CLEAR COMPLIANCE?. 3. If the Up ( ) button is pressed, all compliance data will be cleared and the following message will be displayed for two seconds, COMPLIANCE DATA ERASED!. 4. To retain the compliance data, press the Down ( ) button. The following message will be displayed for two seconds, COMPLIANCE DATA MAINTAINED!. Part No Invacare Polaris EX CPAP with SoftX
6 Exiting the Clinician Set-Up Mode 1. If any Set up mode options, besides date or time, have been changed, a confirmation screen will appear asking if the changes should be saved. To save the changes, press the Up ( ) button. The following message will be displayed for two seconds, CHANGES CONFIRMED!. 2. To discard the changes, press the Down ( ) button. The following message will be displayed for two seconds, CHANGES IGNORED!. 3. The unit will automatically exit the Clinician Set up mode and return to Standby mode. NOTE: Press and hold the Up ( ) and Down ( ) buttons at the same time for approximately two seconds at any time to save any changes made and exit the Clinician Set up mode. Compliance data will not be altered by date and time changes. NOTE: DO NOT use the up ( ) and down ( ) Exit mode noted above when performing the very first initialization of settings. NOTE: If no button is pressed for two minutes or more, the unit automatically exits the Clinician Set up mode and returns to Standby mode. No changes will be saved. Enabling The Clinician Full Compliance Mode 1. Ensure Standby appears in the LCD display window. 2. Press the Up ( ) and Down ( ) buttons at the same time for four seconds or longer to start the Clinician mode. 3. A menu will appear with access to the Clinician Set up mode and Full Compliance mode. 4. Access Full Compliance mode by pressing the Down ( ) button. NOTE: If no button is pressed for two minutes or more, the unit automatically exits the Full Compliance mode. No changes will be saved. Viewing the Full Compliance Data While in Full Compliance mode, press the Enter button to cycle through the following data: Average Hours (last five days) Percent Compliance (last five days) Total Days (calendar) Total (Compliance) Hours (accumulated) Average Hours in use per day Percentage of Compliance Days Invacare Polaris EX CPAP with SoftX 6 Part No
7 Resetting the Compliance Data NOTE: To reset data, while viewing the full compliance data mode, perform the following: 1. Press the Down ( ) button for two seconds or longer to reset the data. The LCD will display a confirmation message ERASE DATA? 2. Press the Up ( ) button to confirm the data reset. Proceed to STEP 5 to cancel the data reset. 3. A confirmation message will appear, CONFIRM ERASE?. 4. Press the Up ( ) button to confirm the data reset. Full compliance data will reset to zero, and the following message will appear for two seconds, COMPLIANCE DATA ERASED! The unit will then exit the Full Compliance mode and start acquiring new compliance data. 5. Press the Down ( ) button to cancel the data reset. Full compliance data will not reset to zero, and the LCD will display the following message for two seconds, COMPLIANCE DATA MAINTAINED! The unit will then exit the Full Compliance mode and continue acquiring compliance data. NOTE: The Operation and Blower Hours do not reset. Exiting the Full Compliance Mode At any time, press and hold the Up ( ) and Down ( ) buttons at the same time for approximately two seconds to exit Full Compliance mode. NOTE: If no button is pressed for two minutes or more, the unit automatically exits Full Compliance mode and returns to Standby mode. No changes will be saved. Enabling The User Settings Mode 1. While in Standby mode, press and hold either the Up ( ) or Down ( ) button for approximately four seconds or longer. A menu will appear with access to the User Settings mode and the Quick Code mode. 2. Press the Up ( ) button until the software version number is displayed to access the User Settings mode. 3. Press the Enter button to cycle through the Set up mode settings. 4. Press the Up ( ) and Down ( ) buttons to change settings. 5. After a change is made, press the Enter button to confirm the change and proceed to the next setting. NOTE: If no button is pressed for two minutes or more, the unit automatically exits to Standby mode. No changes will be saved. Part No Invacare Polaris EX CPAP with SoftX
8 Adjusting the Altitude Setting 1. Enable the User Settings mode. Refer to Enabling The User Settings Mode on page The HIGH ALTITUDE? menu will appear on the LCD display window and the current setting will be highlighted. 3. Press the Up ( ) or Down ( ) buttons to toggle between YES or NO. NOTE: Press the Enter button to confirm the altitude setting selected. Adjusting the Ramp Timer 1. Enable the User Settings mode. Refer to Enabling The User Settings Mode on page Press the Enter button until the ramp time is displayed. The current ramp time will be highlighted. 3. Press the Up ( ) or Down ( ) buttons to increase/decrease the ramp timer setting to the next setting. 4. Press the Enter button to accept the new Ramp Timer setting. NOTE: If no button is pressed for two minutes or more, the unit automatically exits to Standby mode and no changes will be saved. Adjusting the SoftX (Exhalation Unloading) Setting or Change to Standard CPAP 1. Enable the User Settings mode. Refer to Enabling The User Settings Mode on page Press the Enter button until the SoftX setting is displayed. The current SoftX setting will be highlighted. 3. Press the Up ( ) or Down ( ) buttons to scroll through the SoftX settings. NOTE: The unit can be set to Standard CPAP (without SoftX). Standard CPAP is an option within the SoftX settings. 4. Press the Enter button to accept the new SoftX setting. Exiting the User Settings Mode 1. If any settings have been changed, a confirmation screen will appear asking if the changes should be saved. To save the changes, press the Up ( ) button. The following message will be displayed for two seconds, CHANGES CONFIRMED!. 2. To discard the changes, press the Down ( ) button. 9 3. The unit will automatically exit the User Settings mode and return to Standby mode. NOTE: If no button is pressed for two minutes or more, the unit automatically exits to the User Settings mode and returns to Standby mode. No changes will be saved. Enabling the Quick Code Mode NOTE: For this procedure, refer to FIGURE 6, FIGURE 7, and FIGURE While in Standby mode, press and hold the Up ( ) or Down ( ) buttons for approximately four seconds or longer. 2. A menu will be displayed with access to the User Settings mode and the Quick Code mode. 3. Press the Down ( ) button to access the Quick Code mode. Date and quick code data will be displayed. NOTE: If no button is pressed for two minutes or more, the unit automatically exits to Standby mode. Viewing the Quick Code Data 1. The Average Compliance Hours per Day will be displayed with a resolution of 1/10 of an hour without a decimal point (e.g. 53 equals 5.3 hours). Refer to FIGURE 6. S T A R T : M M / D D / Y Y C O D E : FIGURE 6 Average Compliance Hours 2. Percentage of Compliance Days will be displayed without the percent sign such as 071 Refer to FIGURE 7. S T A R T : M M / D D / Y Y C O D E : FIGURE 7 Percentage of Compliance 3. Total Usage Days will be displayed with the resolution of whole day such as Total Usage Days will be displayed in four digits. If there are less than four digits (e.g., 67), Total Usage Days will be displayed with leading zero(s) (e.g., 0067, or 0009). Refer to FIGURE 8. 10 Exiting the Quick Code Mode 1. Press the Enter button at any time when Quick Code mode is enabled to exit. NOTE: If no button is pressed for two minutes, the unit automatically exits Quick Code mode. Blower and Machine Running Hours 1. Blower running hours and operation hours (machine power on hours) can be viewed by Invacare service/manufacturing. 2. While in Standby mode, press the up ( ) button and the Enter button for approximately four seconds or longer. The blower running hours and the operation hours (machine power on hours) will appear in the LCD display window. 3. Press the up ( ) and down ( ) buttons for two seconds or longer to exit to Standby mode. NOTE: If no button is pressed for two minutes or more, the unit automatically exits to Standby mode. Enabling the Heated Humidifier 1. The Polaris EX MUST be set in one of the following operating modes to allow enabling of the heated humidifier: Standby, Therapy, or Ramp. 2. To enable the heated humidifier, press and release the Heated Humidifier ON/OFF ( ) button. The Heated Humidifier Indicator light will illuminate, and HEAT will be displayed in the lower left hand corner of the LCD display. If the operating mode is Standby, enter Therapy or Ramp modes to enable heated humidifier. Otherwise, the heated humidifier will preheat the water for 20 minutes and then disable. The CPAP must be in the Therapy or Ramp operating mode for the heater humidifier to be continuously enabled, with HEAT being displayed on the LCD display. Disabling the Heated Humidifier To disable the humidifier heater, press and release the Heated Humidifier ON/OFF ( ) button. Enabling the Heated Humidifier Set-up Mode 1. The Set up mode for the humidifier heater can be entered at any time during the Standby, Therapy, or Ramp mode. To enter, press the Heated Humidifier ON/OFF ( ) button for approximately four seconds or longer, until the TEMP. SETTING appears. NOTE: The default temperature setting is 105 F. 11 2. Press the Up ( ) or Down ( ) buttons to increase or decrease the humidifier heater plate temperature setting by one division. Key repeat will be active for this setting. Temperature Range: one division = 70 F to 16 divisions = 145 F in 5 F increments. Press Enter. NOTE: If the Set up mode for the humidifier heater is enabled and no button is pressed for 30 seconds or more, the unit will automatically exit to the previous operating mode and no changes will be saved. Exiting the Set-up Mode Press the Enter button to accept the humidifier heater plate setting and return to the previous operating mode. The humidifier heater will be enabled with HEAT displayed on the LCD display. If the previous operating mode was Standby, then the humidifier heater will preheat the water for 20 minutes. If either Therapy or Ramp mode is not entered within this time, the humidifier heater will become disabled, and HEAT will not be displayed on the LCD display. If the previous operating mode was Therapy, the humidifier heater will be enabled with HEAT being displayed on the LCD display. If the previous operating mode was Ramp, the ramp time will start from the beginning and the humidifier heater will be enabled with HEAT being displayed on the LCD display. NOTE: If the Set up mode for the humidifier heater is enabled and no button is pressed for 30 seconds or more, the unit will automatically exit to the previous operating mode and no changes will be saved. Completing the Setup Invacare recommends the following necessary equipment for use with the Polaris EX CPAP system: Invacare Twilight Mask and SleepNet IQ Gel Mask, 6 ft. smooth inner bore tubing (22 mm ID).
