GE Security Smart Cards & Readers Page 3 Overview GE Security offers a Series of contactless Smart Cards and Readers for access control applications. The Smart Cards & Readers operate at MHz, and follow ISO 14443A and ISO standards. There are multiple smart card reader form factors and colors offered, with and without keypad for PIN entry. There are also multiple Smart Cards offered, with different memory configurations, The purpose of this document is to familiarize the reader with the Smart Card and Reader offerings and their options; to assist in efficient and accurate ordering. Smart Cards & Readers Smart Cards may be used in many applications from Access Control to vending to library borrowing, to name a few. In this document the examples presented will cite Access Control applications. Smart Card Readers are configured to read specific pieces of data located in specific memory areas of the Smart Card. The data that is read is then transmitted to an access controller to be processed and to decide whether access should be granted or denied. The Smart Card Reader and the Smart Card must be identically configured for proper operation. If they are not identically configured, then the Smart Card Reader will be unable to access data from the Smart Card, and card data will not be transmitted to the access controller. In an Access Control application, the door will not open when a card that is otherwise properly configured to allow access for that space. Smart Card Readers come from the factory with a default configuration. This default configuration will automatically work with the cards offered through the GE Security Stocked Smart Card Program. This is the simplest and the most secure way to operate your system. If, for some reason, the customer does not want to use the highly secure default configuration of the GE Smart Card/Reader system, then customization can occur. Standard Smart Card Readers are ordered, in conjunction with a command card to provide the reader the specific security configuration data it will need to read the custom Smart Card. The custom Smart Card and the Smart Card reader will need to be identically programmed. If there is any variance between these two components of the system, the system will not grant access. Smart Card Readers and Cards The next two sections will provide a general overview of Smart Card Readers and Smart Cards. This overview includes a description of what is encoded onto smart cards and why. Finally, the detailed guides for ordering GE Security Smart Card Readers and GE Security Smart Cards are provided. T-7xx Reader Overview GE Security is offers three models of Smart Card Readers: T-700, mullion sized, contactless smart card reader (mountable of single electrical box only when combined with the Accessory Mounting plate.) T-720, mid-range, contactless smart card reader (mountable on single- or dual-gang electrical box. Also mounts to European standard electrical box.) T-725, mid-range with keypad, contactless smart card reader (mountable on single- or dual-gang electrical box Also mounts to European standard electrical box.) Each model of GE Security Smart Card Reader is composed of three main components:

Mifare Smart Cards are defined by ISO Standard 14443A; and, my-d vicinity Smart Cards are defined by ISO Standard Operationally, ISO cards have a slightly longer read range that ISO 14443A type Smart Cards. The Mifare Smart Cards are available in two memory configurations, either 1K with 16 sectors or 4K with 40 Sectors. The my-d vicinity Smart Card is configured with 10k bits of memory in up to 15 sectors. All GE Security Smart Cards are credit card sized (CR-80) and are within ISO 7816 card thickness specifications. All the GE Security Smart Cards are made of a composite material composed of PETG and PVC. This provides a durable card, which can be printed upon in most dye sublimation printers. Attribute Mifare my-d vicinity (Vicinity) ISO Standard ISO 14443A ISO Memory Capacity 1K Bytes 4K Bytes 10k bits Memory Sectors Up to 15 sectors Card Size CR 80 Card Material 75% PETG / 25% PVC Composite Protection of Encoded Badge ID Number An important advantage of using GE Security Smart Cards is that they provide the ability to protect the Encoded Badge ID number. The badge encode number is written to a specific sector of the Smart Card. To gain access to that sector s data, a key must be provided to the smart card. GE Security offers two types of key protection for sector data. The first method (and the default method) of

GE Security Smart Cards & Readers Page 5 protection is called the GE Diversified Key method. This is the strongest form of protection for the badge encode number. The second method of protection is called the Fixed Key method. GE Diversified Key Method When the user chooses this method of protection, every card produced has a unique key for the sector where the badge encode number is stored. The key is based upon a mathematical algorithm, which the GE Security Smart Card Reader must use to calculate the unique key value for each card on the fly, when the card is presented to the reader. If an individual is attempting to break the system by sniffing the RF data that is passing between the reader and card (and that data is also encrypted), the most they would be able to break is the key for that individual card. They would not be able to reuse the information gained in the sniffing to generate keys for other cards, since each card using the GE Diversified Key has a unique key. This protection applies only to the Diversified Key method. Fix Key Method When the user chooses this method of protection, every card produced for this system must have the same key for the sector where the badge encode number is stored. The Smart Card Reader is preprogrammed with the key to unlock the sector. When the Smart Card is presented to the reader, the Smart Card Reader will pass the Fixed Key to the Smart Card and the Smart Card will release the Badge Encode (BID) number to the reader. The passing of the Fixed Key data is encrypted between the Smart Card Reader and the Smart Card. The fixed sector key method of protecting the BID puts the end user in control of the smart card. The end user can procure the smart card from a variety of suppliers, and can encode the smart card locally. By default, GE Smart Card Readers are set to use GE Diversified keys. If the customer desires to use the Fix Key method, a Command Card is used to load the Sector Key information into every GE Smart Card Reader in that system. In the Reader Section of this Guide, there is a form, which facilitates the ordering of the Fix Key Command Card. What is encoded on the smart card? Every Smart Card has a unique identifier built into it. This identifier is called the Card Serial Number (CSN) or Unique ID Number (UID). This is burned into the smart card chip during the chip manufacturing process. The T-7xx readers can be configured to read the UID information instead of sector data if the customer wants to configure their system that way. A command card (pn: ) is used to configure the reader to what is called T-5xx emulation mode. This means the T- 7xx reader will only read the UID information from either a Mifare or my-d vicinity smart card. GE Security can also supply encoded Badge ID numbers on Smart Cards. Each Smart Card has multiple sectors of memory. As a standard, GE Security uses Sector 1 to store Badge ID data (on custom cards GE can change to sector 10 or 15). Within that sector, patterns of 0 s and 1 s are written, which can be decoded by the access controller into the Badge ID number. GE Security can encode the Badge ID number in several different Wiegand formats, depending upon the capabilities of the system the customer has. The most common Wiegand Encode format is the 5502 format. This format yields a 16 digit badge ID number. Each Badge ID made with this format is unique. GE Security does not remake or reuse any 16 digit Badge IDs. For legacy systems, which may have difficulty decoding the 5502 format or using a 16 digit Badge ID, GE Security provides the industry standard 26 bit Wiegand format. The 26 bit Wiegand format is well known in the access control industry, and the output is generally interpreted as a three digit Facility Code (between and 00255) and a 5 digit Badge ID (between and 65,732). Since there is a finite limit to the 26 bit Wiegand data patterns, it is possible that Badge ID may be used more than once. This issue can be overcome by the system using this scheme to select his own Fixed Key for encode sector. This will result in the Badge ID being protected by their own sector key, and if a

GE Security Smart Cards & Readers Page 6 repeated Badge ID happened to be presented to the system, it would not be processed since the badge would not have the correct sector Key for that system.

GE Security Smart Cards & Readers Page 7 Mifare 1K Memory Organization The Mifare 1K Smart Card has 16 sectors where data can be stored. Each Sector is comprised of four blocks of 16 bytes each. Block 3 of each sector defines the access keys and access rules for that sector. The remaining 48 bytes (blocks 0, 1 and 2) can be used for data. The default location for GE Security to Encode Badge ID data is Sector 1, block 0. The GE Diversified Key or Fixed Key is encoded in Sector 1, block 3. On a custom basis, GE Security Smart Card Readers can also utilize Sector 10 or Sector 15 to store Badge ID data. Mifare 1K Memory Map

GE Security Smart Cards & Readers Page 8 Mifare 4K Memory Organization The Mifare 4K Smart Card memory is configured in much the same way. On the Mifare 4K Smart Card, there are 40 Sectors, the first 32 of which contain 4 blocks, and the final eight sectors are larger, having 16 blocks in them. Again, each block is composed of 16 bytes, and access to any sector can be restricted by Sector Key. The User / Key Memory with its flexible organization permits up to 14 independent secure sectors of a variable size each protected with a 64 bit key pair. Only after a successful authentication a single sector is accessible. In addition, one freely programmable plain sector is available for general purpose use. The service area contains the UID and manufacturer data. The service area cannot be changed. 16 GE Security Smart Cards & Readers Page 16 Smart Card Ordering Guide GE Security offers two main ways to order smart cards. One method is called the GE Security Stocked Smart Card program, whereby Smart Cards with GE Diversified Keys are pre-encoded with a Badge ID. Every GE Security Stocked Smart Card has a unique Sector Key (GE Diversified). Depending on the Badge ID encoding, the Badge ID may be unique (Format 5502), or the Badge ID may be Facility Code/Badge ID based (Format 26-bit). The cards are CR-80 sized, they are made of composite material that is suitable for in field dye sublimation printing, and they have dots indicating where vertical or horizontal slot punch may be punched. The second method of ordering Smart Cards is to complete a custom card ordering checklist. Use this process if: Customer wants to use customer defined Fixed Keys Customer wants pre-printed artwork printed on the Smart Card Customer wants a card option that this not available on the Stocked card (external ID, Mag Stripe, badge encode number written to different sector, etc)
