11 CHAPTER 1 Overview of the CMC This chapter provides an overview of the CMC appliance, new features, and upgrade instructions. This chapter includes the following sections: Overview of the Central Management Console on page 7 New Features in Version 8.6.0c on page 8 New Features in Version 8.6 on page 8 Upgrading to Version 8.6.x on page 8 Overview of the Central Management Console The CMC appliance facilitates the following essential administration tasks for the Riverbed system: Configuration - The CMC appliance enables you to automatically configure new Steelhead appliance groups or to send configuration settings to appliances in remote offices. The CMC appliance utilizes configuration objects (profiles and groups) to facilitate centralized configuration and reporting. Monitoring - The CMC appliance provides both high-level status of statistics about the performance of Steelhead appliances and enables you to configure event notification for managed Steelhead appliances. Management - The CMC appliance enables you to start, stop, restart, and reboot remote Steelhead appliances. You can also schedule jobs to send software upgrades and configuration changes to remote appliances or to collect logs from remote Steelhead appliances. Partial Federation - You can put any appliance into branch-managed mode to prevent configuration changes or maintenance operations from the CMC appliance. The CMC appliance continues to monitor and gather statistics from appliances that are branch managed. Operations History - The Operations History page lists all of the actions related to configuring Steelhead appliances that have been performed and tells you if they were successful or not. Riverbed Central Management Console Installation Guide 7
12 Overview of the CMC New Features in Version 8.6.0c New Features in Version 8.6.0c The following new features are available in the CMC appliance v8.6.0c: New Appliance Models - The CMC appliance v8.6.0c supports the Series 1000 appliances. Note: SteelCentral Controller for SteelHead is the new CMC appliance product name for the Series 1000 appliances. New Features in Version 8.6 The following new features are available in the CMC appliance v8.6: Certificate Authority on the CMC appliance - This features enables the certificate authority (CA) on the CMC appliance for Steelhead appliances that require signed certificates for secure peering. The new CA service is simpler, as it does not require integration with an expensive external CA, and it does not require generating new peering and pushing large peering encryption files across an entire network. The new CA service is integrated and pushes only one certificate to each appliance when certificates are upgraded Appliance upgrade and downgrade workflow - This feature uses a new upgrade wizard to upgrade and downgrade appliances. The workflow for controlling appliance selection, initiating upgrades or downgrades, and managing the flow of an upgrade process has changed. This feature allows the visibility into the upgrade process state, as well as enhancements to handle 500 simultaneous appliance upgrades. REST API for statistics access - This feature allow you to access statistics from CMC appliance using HTTP-based Representational State Transfer (REST) APIs that return stats values over HTTP transport for external consumption and analysis. REST APIs include secure authentication and provide the full range of data available from CMC appliance reports. New look and feel - The CMC appliance v8.6 has a new look and feel using Web 3 technology. The new user interface (UI) elements will be included in future releases of the Steelhead appliances. Upgrading to Version 8.6.x This section describes how to upgrade to CMC appliance v8.6.x. Riverbed recommends that you upgrade your CMC appliance software from one major version to the next, without skipping intermediate versions. Previous versions have these specific limitations: The CMC appliance must be upgraded to either v6.0 or v6.1 before it can be upgraded to v Upgrading directly from v5.5 to v6.5.0 is not supported. The CMC appliance must be upgraded to v6.5 before it can be upgraded to either v7.0 or v8.0. The CMC appliance must be upgraded to v8.5 before it can be upgraded to v Riverbed Central Management Console Installation Guide
