3 INTRODUCTION With the never ending demand to maintain the highest levels of data integrity for increasingly large data sets, companies are increasingly challenged in finding effective data protection solutions that balance cost, data protection, and DR features. Historical approaches such as tape backup and disk to disk replication for protecting data and ensuring recoverability in disaster scenarios face enormous constraints due to the amounts of human interaction, technical complexity, and costs involved in implementing such solutions to meet recovery requirements. SteelStore appliances are designed around the need for maintaining the highest data integrity, while at the same time delivering the performance and costs that companies need in such a backup and DR solution. SteelStore appliances are file based data deduplication storage devices with CIFS and NFS connectivity to backup applications, and cloud storage connectivity to a var iety of class leading cloud storage providers. Data is ingested into SteelStore appliances using multiple gigabit Ethernet or 10gbE fiber connections, and is in-line deduplicated, compressed, and encrypted before it is written to the SteelStore local cache and asynchronously replicated via secure SSL connections to cloud storage. SteelStore appliances protect data using class leading deduplication technologies, utilizing scalable and cost effective cloud storage to provide long term data storage for backup data, and implementing a local disk cache for immediate restore needs. SteelStore appliances are available in a variety of sizes to scale with business requirements and growth, and are also provided in virtual format editions for virtualized environments such as VMware vsphere and Amazon EC2 marketplace. The flexibility of product types provides alternative methods of performing data recovery in the event of a disaster where infrastructure and resources may not be available in the same manner as in the lost primary data center. UPGRADE PREREQUISITES SteelStore appliances are available as both physical and virtual appliances. You upgrade both types of SteelStore appliances through the web graphical user interface (GUI). To prepare for the upgrade, make sure you have the following information: Prerequisite Description Example Riverbed support login/password SteelStore upgrade image file SteelStore upgrade release notes SteelStore software upgrades are available through the Riverbed support website, which requires a support login ID and password. The upgrade image file used by the SteelStore appliance to upgrade to the latest software release. SteelStore version upgrades might require that the software be at a specific version before upgrading. For details, see the release notes. For example, to upgrade a SteelStore appliance from v1.1.1 to v2.0.0, you must first upgrade to version 1.3.0, and then upgrade to v Upgrades cannot be downgraded after an installation. SteelStore version upgrades might also have special version to version considerations documented in the release notes. For example, when you upgrade from v1.2.0 to v1.2.1 you must perform media verification of backups before performing an upgrade Riverbed Technology. All rights reserved. 2

4 UPGRADE PROCEDURES You perform all upgrade activity through the SteelStore appliance graphical user interface (GUI). Use a supported Web browser such as Mozilla Firefox or Microsoft Internet Explorer to access the SteelStore GUI through the configured IP address of the appliance. Typically, this is the primary (or management) interface of the SteelStore appliance when it was initially configured, but it depends on your setup. To upgrade a SteelStore appliance 1. Optionally, export the current SteelStore appliance configuration as a precautionary measure. This ensures that the most current configuration is saved and accessible. Log in to the SteelStore appliance GUI and choose Configure > Setup Wizard to start the Export Configuration wizard (shown in Figure 1 and Figure 2). Therefore, you must stop all backup data coming in to the SteelStore appliance and also stop the storage optimization service. 2. Stop the storage optimization service by choosing Configure > Maintenance > Service for SteelStore 1.x appliances (see Figure 3) or Configure > Maintenance > Storage Optimization Service for SteelStore 2.x and higher appliances (see Figure 4). The green Healthy status indicator light on the SteelStore appliance turns to a red Critical indicator status after you 2014 Riverbed Technology. All rights reserved. 3

After the storage optimization service stops, choose Configure > Maintenance > Software Upgrade. SteelStore v2.x and higher displays a warning message (shown in Figure 5) if you do not stop the storage optimization service. Figure 5 Service Warning Message 4. Specify the image (.IMG) file to be installed on the SteelStore appliance either by typing a Web URL that contains the image file or, by browsing to a previously downloaded image file on your computer. 6 5. Optionally, select the Schedule Upgrade for Later check box and specify the date and time at which the image should be installed. 6. Click Install to upload the image file to the SteelStore appliance and install it. The SteelStore appliance always installs the image in the older partition and it deletes the previous version that might have been stored. If the image upload failes because of a SteelStore appliance GUI time-out, you can adjust the time-out setting by choosing Configure > Security > Web Settings (as shown in Figure 7) and changing the value for Web Inactivity Timeout. For example, specify a value of zero (0) to prevent a time-out condition from occuring, leaving web GUI sessions logged in permanently during the time the GUI window is open. Click Apply to activate the change. Figure 7 Configuring Web Inactivity Timeout When complete, the SteelStore appliance prompts that a reboot is required to complete the upgrade. To reboot the SteelStore appliance, choose Configure > Maintenance > Reboot/Shutdown and click Reboot (shown in Figure 8). Figure 8 Reboot Screen The SteelStore appliance shuts down and restarts. This process might take several minutes, depending on the upgrade tasks to be performed. When the system completes rebooting and is enabled for connection activity, you see a reply to ping attempts. Log in to the SteelStore GUI after the reboot completes and verify the version installed by examining the version information in the upper right pane of the GUI for SteelStore v1.x appliances, or in the GUI home page for SteelStore v2.x and higher appliances (Figure 9 and Figure 10). 7 POST-UPGRADE CONSIDERATIONS The storage optimization service automatically restarts as a part of the reboot. You can resume all backup activities after you upgrade a SteelStore appliance. Optionally, export the updated configuration to an export file after an upgrade, so that if you need to recover a SteelStore appliance, you can recover the latest data with a configuration matching the SteelStore appliance. SteelStore appliances support importing a version of the configuration file that is a different version from the existing SteelStore appliance version. However, exporting your configuration ensures the best compatibility of saved configuration options. If the upgrade process encounters an unexpected error and the SteelStore appliance is unable to boot, you can boot the SteelStore appliance from the previous configuration version (original version running when you upgraded). During boot time, the OS loader prompts you to boot from one of two configured versions. Select the original version. For Virtual SteelStore appliances, use the console tab view in the VMware vsphere client. For physical SteelStore appliances, connect a computer to the SteelStore appliance through a serial connection. To connect to the SteelStore appliance through a serial connection 1. The terminal device must have the following settings: Baud rate: 9600 bps Data bits: 8 Parity: none Stop bits: 1 vt100 emulation No flow control Note: If you are using a SteelStore appliance with a terminal server, the terminal server must use hardware flow control for the port connected to the SteelStore appliance. Tip: Riverbed recommends that you connect the console port to a device that logs output. Although this is not a requirement, it can help you to identify problems with the system.
