Careers in Smart Technologies Jamie McCormick September 17 th, 18 th & 19 th 2014
Who I am Worked in the Irish Games Industry for 14 years Began games career during 4 th year ( ) running games review websites Moved into retail, journalism, middleware, publishers and developers with some of Ireland s leading games industry companies Now developing a digital marketing platform based on my experience over last five years
Definition of the Smart Environment Cook and Das define Smart environment as "a small world where different kinds of smart device are continuously working to make inhabitants' lives more comfortable." Smart environments aim to satisfy the experience of individuals from every environment, by replacing the hazardous work, physical labour, and repetitive tasks with automated agents. Virtual computing environments enable smart devices to access pertinent services anywhere and anytime. Physical environments may be embedded with a variety of smart devices of different types including tags, sensors and controllers and have different form factors ranging from nano to micro to macro sized. Humans environments: humans, either individually or collectively, inherently form a smart environment for devices. However, humans may themselves be accompanied by smart devices such as mobile phones, use surface-mounted devices (wearable computing) and contain embedded devices (e.g., pacemakers to maintain a healthy heart operation or Augmented Reality contact lenses).
Features of Smart Environments Smart environments are broadly classified to have the following features Remote control of devices, like power line communication systems to control devices. Device Communication, using middleware, and Wireless communication to form a picture of connected environments. Information Acquisition/Dissemination from sensor networks Enhanced Services by Intelligent Devices Predictive and Decision-Making capabilities

Important Leaving Certificate Subjects
Building the Smart Environment To build a smart environment, involves technologies of Wireless communication Algorithm design, Signal Prediction & Classification, Information theory, Multilayered Software Architecture, Corba, middleware Speech recognition Image processing, Image recognition Sensors design, calibration, Motion detection, temperature, pressure sensors, accelerometers Adaptive control, Kalman filters Computer Networking Parallel processing Operating Systems
Programming Smart Technolgies Smart technologies need to be coded, often around algorithms to react to different real-life situations, in some cases millions of miles from home Key subjects: Maths, Applied Maths, Technology
Making Smart Sensors Smart technologies for people include a wide range of medical sensors which convey what s going on inside the body to a different device, such as giving glucose levels in the blood, or targeting Key subjects: Biology, Chemistry
Building Smart Technologies All smart technology devices need to be designed by someone, and then built to work. Key subjects: Technical Drawing, Engineering
Visualising Smart Technologies Smart technologies generate large amounts of data, but these need to be presented in a way that is intuitive and easy to understand to the end user. Key subjects: Design & Communication Graphics, Art
Running Smart Technology Businesses Smart technologies are commercial and academic projects, which will only be successful if they can make something useful and sell it. Key subjects: Accounting, Business, Economics
A final thought For the people in this room, many of the jobs you will be doing in ten years time haven t been invented yet
Thanks for your time!
