3 INSTALLATION OF LEDs Kit Instructions: How to retrofit an existing UL listed sign CAUTION: Disconnect all power to the sign prior to conversion to Principal LED system. Section 1. Installation Instructions. 1. Remove the face of the sign or channel letter. 2. For Neon Signs (including raceway and remote transformer applications): Carefully remove any neon tubing, tube supports, GTO wire, bushings, PK housings (if present) and transformers. Leave transformer box and conduit in remote transformer applications. For LED Signs: Carefully remove power supplies and drivers, LED modules, residual tape or silicone and any output wiring. For Fluorescent Signs: Carefully remove fluorescent tubes, raceway cover, and ballast. Tube supports, wire covers, and output wiring may also need to be removed in case of obstruction with LED system. *Comply with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations when disposing of neon lamps, fluorescent tubes, LED components, transformers and ballasts. 3. Remove any debris and clean the application surface of the sign surface with an oil free, nonresidue solvent or cleaner as instructed by the manufacturer to ensure proper adhesion of the VHB tape on the back of the LED modules. 4. For exterior signs, inspect the sign for holes. Fill openings less than 0.5 in diameter with silicone or caulk, following the manufacturer s instructions. Use a metal patch with screw or pop rivets for larger holes. Do not fill drain holes at the bottom of the sign. 5. Install Principal LED system as described in Section 2 of this manual. Section 2. Installation of LEDs. The Principal LED system is designed for installation in channel letters, cabinet signs, raceway/wireway, and other sign applications. The system is UL recognized and may be used in enclosure and nonenclosure rated signs as well as exposed reverse channel letter applications. Direct mounting of the LED modules and/or drivers on a carrier substrate or plastic or metal sheet is permitted under suitable conditions. 1. The LED system is suitable for dry, damp, or wet locations. Check the IP rating for the module to ensure optimal performance. Do not mount in any areas where the modules can stand in water. 2. Primary wiring must be connected by a licensed electrician and in accordance with the National Electric Code and NFPA standards. 3. The LED driver can be mounted in an enclosure or non enclosure self rated signs and luminaires, raceways, wire ways or in remote applications. 4. In the end product, power supply spacing to other heat producing components shall be minimum 2 inches spacing from the sidewalls. 5. If multiple drivers are mounted, maintain at least 3 inches between drivers to prevent thermal cross talk and heat transfer. 6. LED driver may be mounted using any mounting means necessary (sheet metal screws, VHB tape, etc.) 7. Please observe the output polarity. The (+) wire of the LED module string should be connected to the V(+) output of the low voltage power supply.

8. Check the wattage specifications of the module type.

See table 1 or specific product datasheet for details. 9. When connecting the LED driver to the LED module string, any application approved UL wire connector and #18 AWG or greater wire can be used.

Replacing a defective LED module: In the event of a defective LED module, simply turn off the power to the sign and replace the same part number module by first cutting the wire on each side of the

4 8. Check the wattage specifications of the module type. The maximum number of LEDs can be calculated by multiplying the watts per module times the number of modules and should not exceed the maximum wattage of the Class 2 power source. See table 1 or specific product datasheet for details. 9. When connecting the LED driver to the LED module string, any application approved UL wire connector and #18 AWG or greater wire can be used. 10. LEDs may be cut and spliced between any modules. Wire the modules together in parallel (positive to positive and negative to negative). Do not ground output wiring to the LED modules. Replacing a defective LED module: In the event of a defective LED module, simply turn off the power to the sign and replace the same part number module by first cutting the wire on each side of the old module and removing from the surface. Replace with the new module by splicing in using the appropriate UL recognized hardware (wire nut, butt splice, etc.). Turn power back on to the sign. Section 3. Example Placement of LEDs. Note: This example shows a typical procedure for placement of the LEDs in a sign retrofit. Layout of the LEDs depends upon the desired light output. Please contact Principal LED ( led.com) for a specific estimate or see the layout recommendation included with this kit. Do not attempt to disassemble the LED power supply or drivers. This action will void any warranty. Section 4. Power Supplies. Principal LED modules may be retrofitted using a range of Principal LED 12 volt UL Class 2 power units. Power Supplies include: PL PS xx 12, LPVxx 12, L12VxxUNV A (xx= Maximum Wattage) *Ballast style for use inside a raceway or enclosure rated sign or to be remote mounted inside a separate UL listed mounting box. CEN xx 12, L12VxxUNV Q (xx= Maximum Wattage) * Threaded fitting for connection directly to conduit threading in remote mount applications without a separate enclosure. May be threaded directly to a junction or make up box. Note: Power Supplies must be installed in accordance with UL and NEC guidelines. Primary VAC input power to be wired by a licensed electrician only. Review the power supply specification sheet included or go to led.com for detailed ratings and specifications prior to installation. Equivalent Class 2 power supplies may be provided by Principal LED and must be installed according to manufacturer s specifications and UL guidelines.

Make sure output wiring is connected correctly. Turn off power and check wiring polarity. If so, reverse the wires and illuminate. Make sure LED driver has the correct input voltage (VAC). Make sure there is no exposed wiring that could cause a short circuit. Make sure wire is in electrical contact at the UL listed connector. If the maximum number of modules has been exceeded the sign or luminaire the modules may blink or not turn on. Count the modules and confirm the number of modules is within the maximum number listed in the specification sheet or table above.
