1 Scope: This procedure is designed to aid in the installation of SloanLED s SignBOX II illumination product and power supply products. Skilled tradespeople familiar with general construction, electrical and sign installation techniques should do the installation. Licensed electricians should provide all installation and hook-up of both primary and secondary input/outputs of power supply. All installation and hook-up should be done in accordance with all National and Local codes and permits. In no way is this document intended to construe warranty or fitness of use of the products described, nor is it intended to provide safety instruction for those installing the product. THE FIELD INSTALLATION OF THIS LED RETROFIT KIT INTO A SECTIONAL SIGN IS SUBJECT TO THE ACCEPTANCE OF LOCAL INSPECTION AUTHORITY. THE UL CLASSIFICATION MARK ON THIS LED RETROFIT KIT REQUIRES THE KIT TO BE INSTALLED IN A UL LISTED SIGN ONLY. CAUTION: Turn off power to sign before inspecting or removing existing light source. Power must remain off while installing LED retrofit kit. ATTENTION : Coupez l'alimentation generale du panneau avant d'intervenir ou de retirer la source lumineuse existante. Tools Required Measuring tape, wire strippers, gloves, cutting tool (sheet metal shears/snips, scissors, utility knife), drill, and screwdriver. Supplies Required 1. UL Listed 18 AWG (1 mm²), 2 conductor, PVC jacketed, NEC type PLTC cable (can be purchased from SloanLED in 100 ft (30.48 m) rolls) 2. Cable tie downs (plastic with double-sided tape for mounting) 3. 4 in (101.6 mm) nylon zip ties 4. UL Listed wire nuts (IDEAL P/N # Blue) or appropriate UL Listed electrical connectors 5. #8 (M4) self-drilling/self-tapping tek screws (required to pierce through strap) 6. Silicone 7. ½ in (13 mm) conduit (water tight if mounting power supply in a box outdoors) 8. ½ in (13 mm) conduit connectors (water tight if mounting power supply in a box outdoors) 9. ½ in (13 mm) locknuts 10. 2 Remove Existing Fluorescent Tubes 1. Have a licensed electrician disconnect and remove all ballasts. 2. Remove existing fluorescent tubes and all standoffs to leave an empty sign box/cabinet. NOTE: ALL MATERIALS REMOVED MUST BE DISPOSED OF IN ACCORDANCE WITH APPLICABLE LOCAL, STATE AND FEDERAL LAWS. Installation Cabinet Face 3. Cutting product: Cut straps (along dashed lines) and wires between modules to obtain required length. Tip: Before cutting wires, refer to Joining Product section. Frame Support (Tension Bar) SignBOX II modules NOTE: To minimize potential for shadows in retrofit applications with frame support tubes, use single sided SignBOX II. Mount modules such that frame support tubes are centered in between modules and at a depth that will not directly interfere with beam angle of LEDs. Joining Product.10 THICK When cutting wires between modules, leaving one side longer will aid in joining product where needed. If, however, wires are not long enough for connections, use either jumper wires or remove a module to maximize wire length. 5. Use SignBOX II Clamps (P/N ) and SignBOX II Couplers (P/N ) to join shorter pieces of product to required length. Insert straps from both sides of modules into clamps (track features facing same direction) making sure clamps are flush against modules, snap closed (avoid pinching wires), slide onto couplers, and secure to them with #8 (M4) tek screws. 3 Structural support guidelines for SignBOX II Vertical mounting: space supports at even intervals, but no further apart than 8 ft (2.4 m). Horizontal mounting: space supports at even intervals, but no further apart than 4 ft (1.2 m). Mounting Product Opened Clamp Opening can fit over existing sockets 6a. Mounting modules with SignBOX II Clamps (P/N ) directly to cabinet: Insert straps from both sides of module into clamps (track features facing away from mounting surface) making sure clamps are flush against module, snap closed (avoid pinching wires), and secure to cabinet structure using #8 (M4) tek screws*. Repeat on opposite end making sure product is taut. 6b. Mounting modules with SignBOX II Clamps (P/N ) using SignBOX II Brackets (P/N ): Install brackets 12 in (305 mm) center-to-center along returns of cabinet*. Insert straps from both sides of module into clamps (track features facing same direction) making sure clamps are flush against module, snap closed (avoid pinching wires), slide onto bracket, and secure to it with #8 (M4) tek screws. Repeat on opposite end making sure product is taut. 6c. Optional mounting in single-sided cabinet with double stick tape: Using non-oil based cleaner, clean all mounting surfaces of sign and bottom of modules for proper tape adhesion. With double stick tape on bottom of modules, mount to back of cabinet. Make sure product is taut. (Double stick tape is not included.) Install Power Supply Mounting Tabs Primary Wires Dry Location Sample Configurations Wet Location Secondary Wires Identify primary wires, secondary wires and location of mounting tabs. Configure power supplies: Secure power supplies to junction box using ½ in (13 mm) locknuts. Power supplies may be joined together in a wide array of configurations. Power supplies may be mounted in dry, damp, or wet locations. For wet locations use a junction box that is UL Listed for wet locations. For dry locations use any UL Listed junction box. NOTE: Power supply operating temperature is -40º C to 60º C. To ensure adequate ventilation, it is recommended mounting power supplies without a secondary enclosure. Space power supplies by standard knockout locations ¾ in (19 mm) minimum. If secondary enclosure is used (transformer can), power supply spacing to other heat producing components must have 4 in (102 mm) of space on each side and 2 in (51 mm) minimum to top of enclosure. Ensure power supplies are not overloaded by verifying output current is less than 5 DC Amps. It is recommended to use photo-cells or timing device to make sure power supplies are off during day light hours, when sign illumination is not needed. Higher daytime temperatures and unnecessary operation may shorten power supply lifetime. PAGE 3 OF 5

Mount power supplies: Units may be mounted in any orientation using mounting tabs. Connect primary wiring. Using electrical connectors with appropriate safety agency markings, daisy chain product as required and connect to power supply as shown above. Modules may be connected in series or parallel. End wires of SignBOX II should be capped and not tied back to power supply. option 2 option 3 Check polarity: All connections must be RED-TO-RED (+) and BLACK-TO-BLACK (-). Reverse polarity connections may damage LEDs and will void product warranty. CAUTION: All primary wiring must be done by a licensed electrician. For North American installations, a power supply that meets NEC Class 2 specifications is required. Extension of Power Supply Leads If longer lead wire from power supply to LED modules is needed, an extension can be used. Extension should be kept as short as possible, i.e., under 15 ft for 18 AWG UL Listed PLTC (4.6 m for 1 mm² PLTC) or under 50 ft for 14 AWG UL Listed PLTC (15.2 m for 2.5 mm² PLTC).
