1 Echo SmartPen and Software: The Basics How to use the SmartPen To turn on the pen, press the power button at the top. Make sure the battery is charged. Once the pen is turned on, double tap the menu button on the paper to go to the main menu.

2 The main menu contains all the features that the Smart pen has to offer. Tap the directional keys on the paper to scroll through the menu. The options in the main menu include: Applications: Holds any additional apps that have been downloaded on the pen. Because these pens are being rented through LCC, they don t have any apps. No student will need to use this section. Paper Replay: Paper replay allows you to write and record audio. In paper replay, you can record a new session, play old sessions, delete sessions, or delete all sessions. Piano: This lets you play a piece of special paper like a piano with the Smart Pen. Just go to the app and draw 9 keys on the provided paper. They ll play notes when tapped with the pen. Shortcut buttons: Here, the pen can be adjusted to use shortcuts for certain actions. One of the default shortcuts that the pen comes with is showing the main menu when the center button is double tapped. Settings: Here, you can adjust the brightness of the display, recording quality, microphone sensitivity, playback latency, menu voice, scroll speed, and several other basic parameters. Now that you know the basic functions, let s learn about recording.

3 Make sure that you are using the paper that came with the Smart Pen. To start recording audio, press record on the paper. The pen will start recording immediately. If you want to sync the audio to writing, press record and start writing. Once you re done recording, you can press what you wrote to hear what was recorded at the time you wrote it. All of the controls for the recording and playback are located on the paper.

4 Controls to know for recording: Press record to start recording. Press pause to stop recording, press record again to resume. Press stop to stop the recording completely. You can t resume after pressing stop. Controls to know for Playback: If a session is recorded with both writing and audio, then just tap on what was written and the synced audio will start playing. Press pause to pause the playback. Press the jump buttons to jump either forward or backward along the session by increments of 10 seconds. Press bookmark to mark important parts of the audio. You can jump from bookmark to bookmark. Pressing jump to position lets the session start at any percentage. Just press the percentage you want on the jump to position bar. Press playback speed to slow down, speed up, or stop the playback. Press the volume buttons to raise, lower, or mute the volume.

5 How to Use Echo Software with the SmartPen Echo software allows the user to download any audio and paper replay sessions that they have on the pen onto their computer. This allows the user to listen and review their sessions on the computer. First, download the software at ( Open the installer and follow the instructions to complete the installation. Open the application.

6 Plug the pen into your computer using the Micro-USB that was provided with it. You will be prompted to register the smart pen. DO NOT REGISTER. Once the Pen is connected, the data transfer will start. Once the data transfer is complete, anything that was saved on the pen will now also be saved on the computer. Now you can begin using the features of the software. At the top of the startup page there are four menus: Pages Audio Store SmartPen Manager

7 Pages Once they have been downloaded from your pen, all your notes with accompanying audio (Paper Replay Sessions) will be located in the Pages menu under Notebooks. They are automatically sent to 3-Subject Notebook. To move pages to another notebook, right-click on the page and select, Add to Custom Notebook. Click Create New Notebook to create notebooks for each subject.

8 To hear playback, click on the green letters, and the synced audio will start playing. Audio When you record audio without any writing, it will download to the audio menu. To start a playback, double click the desired recording.

9 Store The Store is where you go to buy additional applications for your Pen. As a student, you will never have to use the Store. SmartPen Manager The SmartPen Manager menu holds updates for the pen. Check it periodically to make sure that outdated software isn t being used. You can also download audio files to your desktop and convert them to text: Find out how on the next page!

10 IBM Watson Right-click on an audio file in echo desktop and select share audio. Then select computer and save it to your desktop. Convert the audio files to a format IBM Watson can use. Go to this conversion website. It will put your files into.wav format: Choose files one at a time and click Convert. Drag the downloaded files to your desktop.

11 Go to the IBM Watson website. Click Upload Audio File. Select the files you want transcribed one at a time. When a file is done transcribing, copy the transcribed text and paste it into your electronic notes.
