4 Exercise System Guide Introduction This course provides a downloadable exercise system that allows you to complete the exercises that accompany the course. This exercise system is a virtual machine that allows you to practice using Pega s software on either Windows or OS X, without having to install or configure the software. This environment includes Pega s software, as well as the PostgreSQL database and the Apache Tomcat web server that supports the Pega installation. When you run the exercise system, you are actually running this virtual machine (the guest) on top of your physical machine (the host). This makes it a great environment for learning on your own time and at your convenience. The virtual machine may not provide an optimal user experience on older or underpowered systems. Caution! Pega Academy exercise system downloads are encoded with compression algorithms that support file sizes larger than 4GB. These files must be decompressed by a utility that supports the compression algorithm, therefore we recommend using 7-Zip (for Windows) and Keka (for OS X) to decompress files. 4

5 System Requirements The following are required for completing Pega Academy exercises using the exercise system: Hardware Minimum 4 GB RAM At least 16 GB of free disk space 64-bit capable CPU Virtualization enabled Caution! If you receive an error message when you try to start your Virtual Machine, your BIOS setting for virtualization is most likely not enabled. You must enable it to continue. We recommend that you perform a google search to find instructions specific to your equipment. Operating Systems Microsoft Windows Apple OS X Software VirtualBox virtualization application ( Note: The exercise system is VirtualBox-based. Pega Academy recommends that you downlolad VirtualBox from Other virtualization applications can be used but require that you convert the exercise system to the appropriate format. Web browser: Internet Explorer (9 11), Chrome, Safari or Firefox Java plug-in: Visual Business Director is a Java applet and requires Java browser plug-in Version 8 Update 77 or higher from Oracle. ( Bonjour Service: This zero-configuration networking software is required to access prpc.local. ( Caution! Bonjour Service needs to be installed on Microsoft Windows computers. (Apple users are fine because it comes built-in with Apple s OS X operating systems.) 5

6 MS Office: Pega 7 has migrated to file-based integration with Microsoft Office and productivity software suites. Beginning in version 7.1.8, Pega 7 supports any version of MS Office that can read and interpret.docx,.xlsx, and.csv files. Decompression software: Pega Academy recommends for Windows: 7-Zip ( for OS X: Keka ( Downloading the exercise system 1. Click the Download Exercise System link in the Downloading the Exercise System lesson. A dialog appears on-screen, and displays a download token. 2. Right-click on the token and select Save Link As to start the download. Once the download begins, you can safely close the dialog window. Installing VirtualBox software Pega Academy recommends using VirtualBox. This application can be downloaded free of charge from For help installing VirtualBox, please see: Unpacking the exercise system The exercise system works on Microsoft Windows and OS X. To keep the archive file size as small as possible, the exercise system is tightly compressed. Depending on your computer, it may take up to 15 minutes for the archive to fully open. The archive contains the following files: Pega Marketing Enablement 7.13 ML9.vbox Pega Marketing Enablement 7.13 ML9-disk1.vmdk Unpacking on Windows using 7-Zip 1. Right-click on the archive file you downloaded from Pega Academy and select 7-Zip > Extract Files. 6

7 2. By default, 7-Zip extracts the archive to your Desktop in a folder named after the file you downloaded. Unpacking on OS X using Keka 1. Right-click on the archive file you downloaded from Pega Academy and select Open With > Keka. 2. By default, Keka extracts the archive to the last location you used. It extracts the content into a folder named after the archive file you downloaded from Pega Academy. Setting VirtualBox Network Preferences The exercise system requires a Host-only network adapter. This allows the host machine (your computer) and the exercise system to communicate with each other. Important: The host-only adapter restricts a virtual machine from accessing the network on which your computer is connected. This means that the exercise system cannot connect to the internet or even the network your computer is connected to. To ensure the exercise system works correctly, check the host-only network adapter settings in VirtualBox. You only need to do this once. 1. From the main menu, select File > Preferences (OS X: VirtualBox > Preferences) 2. Click the Network icon, then select the Host-only Networks tab. 7

8 3. Select the VirtualBox Host-Only Ethernet Adapter (OS X: vboxnet0), then click the Edit icon. 4. The IPv4 Address: field should contain a numeric address such as and the IPv4 Network Mask: field should contain a numeric address such as If these numeric addresses are present, proceed to the next step. If these addresses are not present, enter in the IPv4 Address field and in the IPv4 Network Mask field. 6. Click the DHCP Server tab. 8

9 7. Ensure the Enable Server check box is selected and each of the fields contain numeric addresses as shown. 8. Once you have confirmed the IP addresses, click OK, then OK again to save and close the Preferences dialog window. Remember these addresses only need to be added once for the VirtualBox. Starting the exercise system Before starting the exercise system, it may be necessary to shut down all non-essential applications, especially if your computer has the minimum 4 GB RAM as noted in the System Requirements. Tip: Every virtual machine is allocated a predefined amount of random access memory (RAM). However, this predefined amount of RAM is considered the maximum amount of RAM the exercise system is allowed to use. The actual amount of RAM used may be considerably lower. 1. Launch the VirtualBox application using your preferred method for launching apps. 2. From the Machine menu option, click Add Navigate to the folder you created when unpacking the exercise system and select the VirtualBox file (*.vbox) and click Open. Your virtual machine appears in the left pane of the Oracle VM VirtualBox Manager. 4. Start the exercise system by selecting it in the left pane and from the menu click the green Start arrow (normal start). 9

10 5. Wait for the exercise system to start. Within 30 seconds, you should see the login screen. Once you see the login screen, you can minimize the window to the Taskbar. Connecting in to the exercise system You do not need to login to the console to use the exercise system. Just wait about 3 or 4 minutes and connect to the exercise system using your web browser. 10

11 Open the browser of your choice on your computer and enter the following URL: The home page provides information about the exercise system and a link to access Pega Marketing: To verify Pega Marketing works you can login to the application with user name MarketingAnalyst and password install. 11

12 Congratulations, you are done setting up the exercise system and are ready for the Practicing What You Learn part of the course on PegaAcademy. Shutting Down the exercise system We recommend to properly shut down the exercise system when you are done using it. 1. First, in the browser, logout of Pega Marketing. 2. Then, in the exercise system console, type shutdown. Getting Help Technical support is available to all students who are enrolled in Pega Academy courses that use the exercise system.
