1 Note: Hands-On classes listed in blue text Green text classes suggested for beginners Monday, January 4, 2016 Hernando Computer Club January 2016 Class Schedule am: Genealogy Workshop, Just Drop-In In the Genealogy Workshop, we usually start with everyone telling of their current genealogy research. We all contribute suggestions that could be used to further our research in a particular area; then one subject is covered that day with web sites that cover that particular subject shown on the computer. Again it is an open class with everybody contributing & hopefully learning something new. Just drop in if you have an interest. Facilitator: Ron Conkle 1 pm: Photoshop Elements Advanced Workshop, Just Drop-In Just drop in if you have an interest. Each month a technique, a special tool, or a plug-in, for Photoshop Elements will be demonstrated. Those attending can then work on their own images at home and show their results at the next month's meeting. Attendees should bring a flash drive for images and templates and lots of questions and answers. This is not a basic Elements class. Facilitator: Mich Morin Tuesday, January 5, pm: Basic Windows 10 (1 of 4) Instructor: Gray Alexander 1 pm: Kindle Fire Just Drop-In This class will help you get started on your Kindle Fire. Bring your Kindle to class and play along.we will cover having an account, so you can use your amazon account to download items you want to purchase. We will spend time finding our way around the kindle. We will practice adding apps and customizing settings. Questions and input are encouraged. We all learn more this way. 2 1 pm: Picasa, Import, Organize and Improve your photos. (1 of 2) Just drop-in How to download and install the FREE Picasa image enhancement software program from Google. How to import the photos from your camera. How to set up language, upload size, backup your photos, , and other settings in Picasa. Instructor: Fred Wise 7 pm: Linux Workshop, Just Drop-In The Linux workshop is a working session for users to bring their questions and experiences to the group. Attendees are encouraged to bring their computers with them for use in the workshop. We are working with different subjects each week and expect to cover areas such as installation and administration, file systems, setting up servers (print, file, web, etc), using WINE and virtual machines, and other topics that the group is interested in. Just drop in if you have an interest. Facilitator: Bob Liebl 7 pm: Clean the cobwebs out of your computer Just Drop in Feeling helpless when your computer is sluggish? Do you feel even worse when you learn that you must have someone else come in and fix it, for you often at considerable cost? There s good news! You can fix most of these problems yourself. Learn how in this class. We call it getting the cob webs out. You ll learn there s software available, most of which is free, to clear out those cob webs. You ll learn that after the first time, applying this software, most issues with poor performance, improve significantly. Do it, yourself, with confidence. It s all easier than you may think. You only need to learn 4 things in this class. 1. Understand what s happening in your PC and why. 2. Where to find free or inexpensive software online to address it. 3. How to apply the software, successfully and safely. 4. How to maintain your computer to keep it running at top performance. Instructor: Dave Fetter. Thursday, January 7, am: Intro To Ipad HnH - All About Apps (7/8) Let s look at some of the apps that come preinstalled on your ipad as well as others available from the app store. 10 am: Basic Photoshop Elements (1 of 4) Instructor: Mich Morin Hands-On Just Drop-In $5 per session No Pre-registration Required 1 pm: Using Windows 10, HnH, Just Drop In, Working with Files and Folders (4 of 8) This 8 week lecture series has something for all computer users whether you are brand new to computers or have worked with earlier versions of Windows. This week we will look at organizing your files. Create additional folders and make documents, photos, etc. easier to find. Also, how to save a new document to a folder using the simplified word processing program WordPad which is part of Windows pm: Advanced Photoshop Elements (1 of 4) Instructor: Mich Morin Hands-On

3 Friday, January 8, am: Help for our Members Just Drop In Windows 7, 8.1 & 10. First come, first served. 10 am until noon 10 am: New to Computers (1 of 2) Instructor: Charlene Scime Hands-On 1 pm: Using the Android tablet, The Basics & Screens You'll See, HnH Just Drop-In Do you have an Android (Google) tablet? Join for this Half and Half class, get to know the capabilities of your tablet and be pleasantly surprised what it all can do for you. This week will be the basics, getting around on your device. Instructor: Ron Purkhiser 1 pm: Maintenance and Security for your PC Just Drop-In PCs are complicated machines and they need weekly and monthly clean ups to keep them running at full speed. The available Windows maintenance tools, and security settings for Internet Explorer and will be discussed and demonstrated. Firewalls, antivirus and antispyware software will be discussed; they are important components of a package of tools that help keep a computer healthy and running well. Instructor: Gray Alexander Monday, January, 11, am: Open House/Newcomers Orientation Open to the Public 1 pm: The Food Workshop Just Drop-In The where, what, when and how of food. We ll Introduce & view various food websites and use these websites for development of your personal food or recipes files. Develop proper food file order (indexing, classifying, etc,) Coupon selection contributions & distributions so all members can use and become interested in building a once- a - month workshop. Coupons could also include restaurants, sport bars, etc. Lots of workshop discussion involving foods, prices, cooking. Our Goals: Development of a HCC recipe cookbook by members participating with the recipes, editing, placing graphics and indexing for this type of book. Building the book over a long period of time. Maybe a series of books of different food recipes, or maybe a yearly edition or bi-yearly edition. Facilitator: Kearney Sheirich Tuesday, January 12, :30 am: Board Meeting 1 pm: Basic Windows 10 (2 of 4) Instructor: Gray Alexander 1 pm: Skype Messaging and Video Chatting, HnH Just Drop-In Video chatting used to be called Video Conferencing when business meetings were conducted with some members present only on the screen. In the meantime millions of Grandparents enjoy chatting with their grandchildren living all over the world. Skype was the first to become popular, now totally free video chatting is possible with many companies. Your gmail account also includes

4 free video chatting and much more. Come and see how it works and what choices you have to make it work. We have all heard of itunes and associate it strictly with purchasing music and videos. 5 1 pm: Facebook, come in and learn to post, share and upload photos, Just Drop-In Are you having trouble uploading photos, want to know how to share or post things? Wonder how do you navigate around Facebook? Then this class is for you. Be sure and bring photos you want to upload on a USB drive or your computer. Instructor: Linda Aliff Monday, January 18, am: Computerized Sewing Workshop Just Drop-In The Computerized Sewing Workshop is comprised of people who share their love of sewing and embroidery. Each month a different technique or project is demonstrated by one of the members. After the demo, all are encouraged to participate in a Show and Tell session to display and explain their latest creations. Won t you join us? Just drop in if you have an interest. Moderator: Norma Winner 1 pm: Android Phone Basics HnH Just Drop-In (Half lecture, half hands-on on your own phone) There is a lot to know about the Android Phone if you are new to them or thinking of getting one. It s much more than just a phone, a GPS built in to guide you where you are going, Get your , Set up an appointment calendar with reminders, Browse the internet and so much more. We can help you learn about this wonderful device. Instructor: Ross Schnarrenberger 1 pm: Introduction to Facebook, Just drop-in The Facebook Class will cover everything from signing up for a Facebook account and logging in, how to post memes, messages, and pictures. It will also cover advanced settings and how to recognize scams on Facebook. Please bring a laptop if you have one. Tablets & Smart phones do not have all the features that are covered in the class. Instructor: Sal Rotella Jr. Tuesday, January 19, pm: Basic Windows 10 (3 of 4) Instructor: Gray Alexander 1 pm: Get To Know Your I-Phone Get started learning your way around the apps on your new I-Phone. You can phone, text and from your phone. This is just a few of the apps on the Apple I-Phone. Be sure to bring along you Apple ID and password. Also charge you phone before the class. 6 1 pm: FREE CLASS OF THE MONTH OPEN TO ALL JUST DROP-IN FREE Music and Books, Just Drop In Learn how to download free music and books to your computer and enjoy it on different forms of media. You will be taught how to create CDs, put music or books onto your I Pads, Android Tablets, MP3 players and other devices. If you have basic knowledge of your computer, this is a class you won't want to miss. Instructor: Ron Dakin 7 pm: Linux, The FREE Alternative to Windows Just Drop-In Linux, an alternative to Windows for an operating system. This Linux system has most all of the features of Windows, but with fewer problems. Attend this lecture and learn all about the features and benefits. Instructor: Bob Liebl 7 pm: "Calc with OpenOffice", Just drop-in Microsoft calls it MS Excel. Open office calls it Calc. The difference is that Calc is a FREE download that does nearly everything, that Excel does. Calc just does it a little differently than Excel to avoid the proprietary copyrights Microsoft has registered to discourage competition from using its intellectual property. So, let s explore, together, a free method to use spreadsheets to create our projects, with a program written and managed by EX-Microsoft design employees. Instructor: Dave Fetter Thursday, January 21, am: Intro To Ipad HnH - What are those buttons and the Home Screen (1/8) Learn what the buttons around the perimeter of your ipad are. Next, we ll look at how your Home Screen is set up and how you can customize it. Find out what apps came with your ipad. 10 am: Basic Photoshop Elements (3 of 4) Instructor: Mich Morin Hands-On Just Drop-In $5 per session No Pre-registration Required 1 pm: Using Windows 10, HnH, Just Drop In, Microsoft Edge (the new web browser) (6 of 8) This 8 week lecture series has something for all computer users whether you are brand new to computers or have worked with earlier versions of Windows. This week we look at surfing the internet with Microsoft s brand new web browser Microsoft Edge. Exploring the Calendar, Camera, visiting the PlayStore and browsing the internet. Instructor: Ron Purkhiser 1 pm: How to have a FREE website Just Drop-In Google gives us so many free things, why not take advantage. Have a free Website, free Web building tools and more... In the first hour you will see how to log in, how to ad pages and place photos, text and links onto your Webpages. In the second hour you will log in and start building your own Website. Bring your laptop fully charged, have some pictures and text ready to be used. Also set up a gmail account for yourself and make sure you know your password. Ready set go! Instructor: Brigitte Haag Monday, January 25, pm: Genealogy Searches & Tips with Family Tree Maker Just Drop-In Learn about the on-line genealogy resources of Ancestry.com, MyHeritage, Geni, Family Search and others. Use Family Tree Maker to record what you find, to document your sources and to prepare and print a report or chart. Share your research with friends and family. I-Pads, SmartPhones, Digital cameras just to name a few. Everyone attending is encouraged to being one of their gadgets you may need help with. This week we will look at contacts and . While Windows 10 has an app for handling your , it is not that user friendly. Because of this, we are going to be showing you a tried and true program called Windows Live Mail. It is part of a package Microsoft put together back in the early days of Windows 7 and is still popular to this day. Many manufacturers elected to include it on their computers even though it was not officially part of the operating system.
