1 SEPT. 11 TO THE PRESENT SETTING UP AND USING YOUR AMAZON FIRE TABLET INITIAL SET-UP and REGISGRATION 1. Select language and font size (at bottom). Tap English and largest font (suggested). 2. Connect to the FCPS internet. Follow specific teacher directions. 3. Tap New to Amazon / Start Here. 4. Select Country/Region and select United States. and tap Continue. 5. Fill out Full Name and for , use your school assigned Your Password is your school ID plus your two letter initials and an!. Do not use any other password. Enter it, then tap Create Account. 7. On the Enter payment method DO NOT enter any any information of any kind. Tap SKIP then OK. NOTE: This device may NOT be used to make purchases of ANY kind. You You are NOT ALLOWED to enter any kind of payment option in your Amazon account. 8. On the Enter Residential Address screen DO NOT enter any information of any kind. Tap SKIP then OK. 9. Under Enable Location Services and Save Wi-Fi Password to Amazon it is recommended you keep the boxes checked. Note: This will enable your device to be tracked and recovered more easily if lost. You may reject this setting if you like.

2 \ SET-UP and REGISGRATION CONTINUED HEADPHONE VOLUME POWER 10. Uncheck the boxes next to Photo/Video Auto Save and Backup and Restore. Then tap CONTINUE. 11. On the Who will use this Fire DO NOT enter any other names. Tap CONTINUE. 12. DO NOT tap CONNECT after Goodreads, Facebook or Twitter. Tap CONTINUE. This device is NOT to be used for connection to ANY social network at school or home. 12. Take the tutorial that now pops up! Tap CONTINUE. Please insert headphones for the tutorial. Note: You will not be using some of the features shown. Details will follow. CREATE FILES FOR NAVIGATION The HOME screen will open. Many of the APPS on this screen will not be used in class. Create a folder for them by doing the following Press and drag the Amazon Shop icon on top of the Amazon Video icon. It will create a folder. Name it Not Used and press the yellow check mark. 2. Drag the following APPS to the folder: Free Time, Kindle Books, Music, Audible, Newsstand, Amazon Photos, Games, Goodreads, and Contacts. LET S DOWNLOAD SOME APPS 1. Tap Appstore. While in the Amazon Apps Store, tap Underground. This is a special service offered to Fire tablet owners. BACK HOME RECENT AND CLOSE

3 LET S DOWNLOAD SOME APPS CONTINUED 2. Tap the search icon. Type in the following APPS and download each one, according to the directions, one at a time, using the back button when finished: VideoPad Video Editor Free / ezpdf Reader PDF Annotate Form / Notepad / Send to Kindle / QR & Barcode Reader / Easy Voice Recorder Pro Aloud Reader 3. You may use your Fire to track the news each day. From the search window, type in News and download any four (4) news apps of your choice. Note: The Washington Post is pre-loaded on your tablet. NBC Nightly News, and CNN, Reuters, Newsy Video News, etc. are recommended. WHY? We selected the Amazon Fire after previewing many tablets and found it to be the most effective. It features a fast 1.3 GH quad-core processor, 4G connectivity, front and rear facing cameras, and free premium App content great for classroom use! ACTIVATING SEND TO KINDEL You will be using your Send to Kindle app for reading online material when you are not connected to the internet. You will need to set it up first. Here s what you do From the top of the home page pull down with you finger. Touch Settings and then My Account. Note the your device is registered to and jot it down. 2. Return to the homepage and click the Send to Kindle icon. In the box labeled Kindl type in the name portion you wrote down (before sign). Type in your full address under Kindle approved . Tap the yellow check mark. Return home. Note: When reading most articles, you can save them to your Fire by clicking share and then selecting Send to Kindle. You can find it by opening the Docs icon. You may also send articles to app.

4 SETTING UP SILK Go to the homepage. Silk is your tablet internet browser. Tap it to open. In the Search the web box type in google.com Now tap the bookmark icon. VISITING THE CLASS WEB-PAGE Now let s bookmark, and take a tour of our class webpage. Click to get back to the homepage. 1. To get there, open your QR code reader and scan the code at the right. A password box will appear you may pinch to expand it. Enter the password It is:. When asked, save the password. 2. Be sure to bookmark the site by tapping the icon. 3. You may also get to the site by going to: Sept11tothepresent.weebly.com 4. We will take a tour of the many features of the class web page as part of your orientation to the class. PAGES NOT USED As you swipe left from the home page, you will notice a number of pages, including Books, Video, Games, Shop, Music, and Audiobooks, These pages require purchasing abilities that are NOT ALLOWED on the tablet. You may however see content you have legally saved under Apps and Newsstand.

5 CHANGING YOUR WALLPAPER 1. From the homepage, pull down with your finger. 2. Tap Settings. and tap Display. 3. Tap Wallpaper and select your favorite background. Note: Do NOT download live wallpaper, or other background apps. SETTING UP WEATHER OPTIONAL If you turned on Location Based Services your weather is active and you may skip this step. Note: If you activate the weather app you will need to enable Location Based Services, allowing your tablet to be tracked and followed. This is your choice. If you decide to allow this, lease refer to the safety lesson provided by Ms. Thompson internet practices. If you choose to do this Tap Weather. Select Enable when the disabled pop-up appears. On the next screen tap the button next to Location Based Services. All Apps will be automatically selected. 2. IMPORTANT: You should de-select (turn off) everything EXCEPT Weather. You will have to do this for each item. ACTIVATING FIND YOUR TABLET OPTIONAL 1. From the top of the screen pull down with your finger until the notifications window appears. From there tap on Settings. 2. Tap Device Options. Now tap the button next to Find Your Tablet. Note: This will require Location Based Services to be turned on. Important: If you believe your tablet is stolen, DO NOT attempt to retrieve it yourself. Notify your teacher ASAP and he/she will guide you through this option.

6 USING YOUR QR CODE SCANNER Now let s take a tour of your tablet using your QR code scanner. Be sure to insert headphones first. 1. Tap the QR icon. Using the automatic camera scan the QR code to the right and then tap Open. Select Silk You can now watch a video about your new tablet. SETTING UP YOUR 1. From the homepage tap Enter your school address. Do NOT use a personal address for your tablet. 3. Enter your password. Your password is your school ID plus your two letter initials and! (like you set up earlier). Do NOT use any other password for your school assigned . Tap Next. 3. For your account type, select EXCHANGE. 4. Next to Exchange Server type: mail.fcps.org Note: Articles that you save to your tablet by selecting Send to Kindle will also be ed to you. So will a confirmation of apps you install. 7 SEPT. 11 TO THE PRESENT USING YOUR NEW APPS INSTRUCTION GUIDE GETTING STARTED Some of your apps allow you to download worksheets, articles, and even slides used in class so you can follow along with the lesson. 1. Open SILK. Go to the class webpage. You can use the page you bookmarked or type in Sept11tothepresent.weebly.com or scan the QR code on the right. CLASS WEBPAGE 2. Scroll down and tap Unit One. Under Helpful Links tap Lesson Presentations. Now tap the thumbnail labeled Then click Open or View. Now tap ezpdf Reader and select Always. If you get a pop-up ad, tap X or Close. The slide presentation for that lesson will now open. You may page-flip the slides with your finger. The annotations below explain more... Allows you to search for any term in the presentation. USING ezpdf READER Allows you to bookmark a page. Tap this then tap the + and enter a description. Moves pages forward or back Reads the page aloud to you. If you don t like the voice you can change it by tapping on settings then tap download additional voices. You can use the function bar at the bottom to control play, forward, and back, etc. Tap on these, at the top of the page, to allow you to take notes, and write on top of the slides you are viewing. Scan here for PDF Instruction manual You can return to the document you are viewing by re-opening the app and tapping recent at the top of the page. Your documents will appear on a bookshelf.

8 CLASS WEBPAGE USING SEND TO KINDLE 1. Open SILK. Go to the class webpage. You can use the page you bookmarked or type in Sept11tothepresent.weebly.com or scan the QR code on the right. 2. Go back to the Unit One page and now select Multimedia Room and Assignments Scroll down to #14 When Everything Changed and tap the photo thumbnail. You will be taken to the Frederick News Post. Lets say you want to save this article (or others like it) for offline reading. Here s how you do it. 3. Next to the address bar, tap on the three vertical dots. Tap Share. 4. Tap Send to Kindle. On the next page, tap Send to Kindle again. Press O to return to the homepage. 5. To retrieve it, press Docs on the homepage. Tap Send to Kindle and select the article. USING VOICE ALOUD READER USING NOTEPAD 1. Repeat steps 1-3 above. \ 2. After tapping share Aloud Reader. 3. The app will automatically open and begin reading the article to you. 4. You can turn off the sound by pressing pause. 5. Take a tour of the app by pressing and selecting Tutorial. 1. From the homepage open Notepad You can use this app to make notes to yourself. 2. From the top menu tap Add Note. Tap the pencil and page icon in the right top corner. 3. Begin typing a note to yourself. You can change pad color by selecting color at the bottom. 4. Tap Help for a tutorial.
