2 Product description Product description Sun StorEdge Traffic Manager (STMS) for CLARiiON is software available from Sun Microsystems that provides failover for EMC CLARiiON storage systems. STMS also provides load balancing for up to 16 paths to a CLARiiON storage system. New features and changes Sun StorEdge Traffic Manager on Solaris 10 now supports CLARiiON storage systems. 2

3 Environment and system requirements Environment and system requirements Host requirements This section identifies the hardware and software supported by Sun StorEdge Traffic Manager for CLARiiON. The following table shows the minimum requirements for Solaris hosts to run Sun StorEdge Traffic Manager for CLARiiON: Operating system Patch or package containing CLARiiON support Solaris 9 Sun StorEdge SAN Foundation Software or higher Solaris 10 Solaris 10 patch for SPARC CAUTION Sun StorEdge Traffic Manager and EMC PowerPath cannot co-exist on the same host. HBAs, HBA driver software, and operating system software The EMC Support Matrix is the definitive source of information about supported EMC HBAs, operating system software and driver software. To read it, go to the EMC website ( and search for matrices. Choose the link to the EMC Interoperability Support Matrices, then the link to the EMC Support Matrix. FLARE storage-system software CX-series and AX-series storage systems use FLARE software (formerly called Base Software). The minimum revisions of FLARE software used to test this release are as follows: Storage system FLARE CX-series AX-series

4 Environment and system requirements Navisphere products The EMC Navisphere Host Agent and Navisphere Server Utility are not supported on hosts running Sun StorEdge Traffic Manager. Host registration with a CLARiiON storage system must be done manually. FLARE storage-system layered applications EMC MirrorView /Asynchronous software, EMC MirrorView/Synchronous software, and EMC SAN Copy software are not supported with hosts running Sun StorEdge Traffic Manager. EMC SnapView software is supported with hosts running Sun StorEdge Traffic Manager. 4

5 Fixed problems Fixed problems None This is the first release of the product. Known problems and limitations This section identifies known problems and limitations with this release. Description When the host is booted with a path down, reconnecting the path does not automatically enable the dead paths. After enabling the dead paths, the LUNs do not automatically fail back to their PRIMARY SPs. [120427] Disconnecting a host from a storage group, will hang the format command and put STMS in a perpetual trespass mode, thereby creating a large /var/adm/messages file. [209875] Disconnecting both LCC cables to a single enclosure will put STMS in a perpetual trespass mode, thereby creating a large /var/adm/messages file. [215897] Navisphere Host Agent and Navisphere Server Utility can not push a host registration command down all paths to the CLARiiON. [208875] Workaround Run the following command to enable dead paths. cfgadm c configure c<controller #> To manually fail back the LUNs to their PRIMARY SPs, run the following step (not OS dependent) luxadm failover primary /dev/rdsk/c#t#d#s2 None. None. None. Navisphere Host Agent and Navisphere Server Utility are not supported with Sun StorEdge Traffic Manager. Limitations Sun StorEdge Traffic Manager and EMC PowerPath cannot coexist on the same host. EMC Navisphere Server Utility and EMC Navisphere Host Agent are not supported on hosts running Sun StorEdge Traffic Manager. 5

6 Technical notes Technical notes Manual registration of Sun StorEdge Traffic Manager hosts Determining host HBA WWNs The Navisphere Agent and Navisphere Server Utility are not supported on hosts with Sun StorEdge Traffic Manager. These hosts must be manually registered with CLARiiON storage systems. EMC recommends using the steps below. Determine the WWN (world wide names -- the embedded, numeric identifier) of each HBA that you will connect to the CLARiiON storage systems. Make a note of each controller number and worldwide port name; you will use these numbers later to complete the manual host registration process. 6

7 Technical notes Using Navisphere Manager Follow the procedures below if you are managing your storage system with Navisphere Manager. Setting connection properties using Navisphere Manager 1. Right-click the storage-system name in the Enterprise Storage window in Navisphere Manager. 2. Click Connectivity Status in the pop-up menu. The Connectivity Status dialog opens. If the zones are activated and your host system has been booted, you should see the initiator WWNs of your HBAs with a Fibre Logged In status of Yes. You may have to wait for Navisphere Manager to update its initiator table from the storage system, if your system has booted and the zones have been established, and no Fibre Logged In entries are appearing as Yes. If, after 60 seconds, the storage system still does not show a Yes in the Fibre Logged In column, examine the zoning configuration and status using the fabric switch configuration tool supplied by the switch manufacturer. Registering the connection using Navisphere Manager When you have established a connection between the SP and the HBA, you must register the connection. The registration process assigns a specific initiator type to the connection between the SP port and the HBA. This initiator type determines how the SP responds to SCSI commands received on the port. To register the connection: 1. From the Connectivity Status dialog, select the connection for the WWPN of the HBA, and click Register to open the Register Initiator Record dialog. 2. Select the following: Initiator Type of CLARiiON Open. ArrayCommPath box to enable the correct LUNZ behavior. Unit Serial Number of Array. Failover Mode of 1. 7

8 Technical notes Using Navisphere Express 3. In the Host Information box, select New Host or Existing Host and specify the following: If this is a New Host, enter the hostname and IP address. If this is an Existing Host, click Host, and select the host from the pull-down list. 4. Click OK. After a few seconds, the Connectivity Status dialog appears again with the registration status changed from No to Yes. When you have completed registration for all of your new HBA connections, you are ready to create a storage group and make your LUNs visible to the host. Follow the procedures below if you are managing your storage system with Navisphere Express. Setting connection properties using Navisphere Express 1. Start Navisphere Express. 2. In the navigation pane, under Manage, click Connections to open the Manage Connections page. If the zones are activated and your host system has been booted, you should see the initiator WWNs of your HBAs with an SP/Port Status of Active[Unregistered]. You may have to wait for Navisphere Express to update its initiator table from the storage system, if your system has booted and the zones have been established, but no SP/Port Status entries are appearing as Active[Unregistered]. If, after 60 seconds, the storage system still does not show a Active[Unregistered] in the SP/Port Status column, examine the zoning configuration and status using the fabric switch configuration tool supplied by the switch manufacturer. Registering the connection using Navisphere Express When you have established a connection between the SP and the HBA, you must register the connection. The registration process assigns a specific server to the connection between the SP Port and the HBA. To register the connection: 1. From the Manage Connections page, select the check box preceding the server connections you want to register (Active[Unregistered] status), and click Modify. The Modify Connection page appears. 8

9 Technical notes 2. Select the server in which the HBA resides. If the HBA is in a new server, select New and then enter the name and IP address for the server. If the HBA is in an already installed server, click Existing, and then select a server from the drop-down list. 3. Click Apply to save any changes. After a few seconds, the Manage Connections screen appears again with the registration status changed from Active[Unregistered] to Active. When you have completed registration for all of your new HBA connections, you are ready to create Virtual Disks and make them visible to the host. 9
