2 To access work documents from home you will need to create a VPN connection. This will allow you to securely connect to Exeter University network from other location such as your home. If you would like to access the University of Exeter Secure VPN Service using Linux 64bit operating system, first you will need to contact the IT helpdesk and ask to be put in the Linux user group, then follow the instructions below to access the VPN system. Initial setting up of VPN Java version. (Please Note: This method has been tested on Ubuntu bit Ubuntu bit and Ubuntu bit with Oracle Java but may vary with other Linux distributions and versions of Java) All commands to be entered are written in BLUE Open a Terminal window Check to see if you have 64bit Java installed by running the following command Java version If when running this command you find that you have OpenJDK installed, this will need to be completely removed before continuing. This can be done by running the following command, and then continuing to section 1. sudo apt-get purge openjdk-\* If Java is not installed you will see the following, please follow the instructions below to install it. If it is installed, please skip to section 2

3 Installing Java Make a directory in which to install 64bit java sudo mkdir -p /usr/local/java64 (you may be prompted for your password) Download Java for linux x64 from downloads html (Make sure it is the.tar.gz file and save it to your downloads folder) Copy the downloaded file into the directory that you created using the following commands cd /home/<your user name>/downloads sudo cp r jre-7u55-linux-x64.tar.gz /usr/local/java64 (change file name to suite your installation) cd /usr/local/java64 Switch to root, this will ensure that java is installed for all users sudo s

4 sudo chmod a+x jre-7u55-linuxx64.tar.gz Unpack the downloaded file sudo tar xvzf jre-7u55-linux-x64.tar.gz At this point you should have two uncompressed binary directories, check this with command ls a You should see the directory jre1.7.0_55 (may vary with version) You now need to edit the system PATH file /etc/profile to do this type sudo nano /etc/profile Use the arrow keys to move the cursor to the end of the file and insert the following JAVA_HOME=/usr/local/java64/jre1.7.0_55 PATH=$PATH:$HOME/bin:$JAVA_HOME/bin export JAVA_HOME export PATH Press ctrl + X to exit and Y to save, then press enter to save as /etc/profile

5 Make the new java version ready for use. sudo update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/java java /usr/local/java64/jre1.7.0_55/bin/java 1 sudo update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/javaws javaws/usr/local/java64/jre1.7.0_55/bin/javaws 1 Set Java as default sudo update-alternatives --set java /usr/local/java64/jre1.7.0_55/bin/java sudo update-alternatives --set javaws /usr/local/java64/jre1.7.0_55/bin/javaws Test to see that Java is installed correctly. java version Reboot your PC to complete the installation Now you need to enable java in your web browser Go to the Firefox plugins directory cd /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins If this directory does not exist, create it sudo mkdir /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins Create a symbolic link between the Java plugin and Firefox sudo ln s /usr/local/java64/jre1.7.0_55/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so

6 Navigate to to verify your installation (you may have to activate the Java plugin from within the browser by clicking a link) Confirmation of installation.

7 Installing 32bit Java Download 32bit java from Create a directory in which to install 32bit java sudo mkdir /usr/local/java32 Navigate to your downloads folder cd /home/<your user name>/downloads Copy the downloaded file to the new directory sudo cp jre-7u55-linux-i586.tar.gz /usr/local/java32 Navigate to this directory cd /usr/local/java32 Install 32bit Java sudo tar xvf jre-7u55-linux-i586.tar.gz sudo update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/java java /usr/local/java32/jre1.7.0_55/bin/java 1 Make sure that 64bit java is still default update-alternatives --display java

8 Installing 32bit Libraries For Ubuntu sudo apt-get y install ia32-libs For Ubuntu sudo apt-get install libstdc++6:i386 lib32z1 lib32ncurses5 lib32bz2-1.0 libxext6:i386 libxrender1:i386 libxtst6:i386 libxi6:i386 For Ubuntu Install 32bit libraries sudo apt-get install libstdc++6:i386 lib32z1 lib32ncurses5 lib32bz2-1.0 libxext6:i386 libxrender1:i386 libxtst6:i386 libxi6:i386 Create symbolic link for update alternatives sudo ln -s /usr/bin/update-alternatives /usr/sbin/ Starting the VPN connection Open Firefox and navigate to Login with your university username and password (You may have to allow permission for java to run) Once logged in you will be prompted to run network connect. The first time you run network connect you may be prompted to enter your password in a terminal window, please enter the admin password for your computer to continue Network connect is now running, you can verify that you are connected to the university network by opening a terminal window and typing Ifconfig You should see details of your tunnel interface (tun0) which should have a x.x IP address
