3 Introduction Lime Survey is an on-line survey application that enables users to develop and publish online surveys, and collect responses. This quick guide outlines the steps to create and publish a survey but, given the array of survey question types, only covers one type: a single choice question selected via a radio button. Logging In Users require a username and password. Send requests to: j.flower@exeter.ac.uk. Launch a web browser and log in at the following address: Survey Creation Process Steps There are five steps to creating an online survey from scratch: 1. Create the survey. 2. Create a question group. 3. Create the survey questions. 4. Test the survey. 5. Publish the survey. Structurally, at a fundamental level, a survey contains a question group, which is populated with questions. The survey creation process echoes this structure in that firstly the survey is created, then the question group and then the questions. Creating A Survey 1. Create the survey a. Click the plus + icon in the top-right corner of the page. b. Configure general options Enter a title for the survey ie.: Test Survey i. Optional: Enter: A description for the survey. A welcome message ie.: Welcome to the survey. Please answer all questions.

4 An end message ie.: Thank you for taking the survey. ii. Configure: Date format (default is: mm.dd.yyyy). Bounce address to send undelivered survey invites. iii. Click: Save c. Configure presentation and navigation options i. Click: pencil icon > General settings ii. Click: Presentation & navigation iii. Configure:

5 From this page it is possible to configure, for example: Survey look and feel (via: Template) Back button Progress bar iv. Click: Save d. Configure publication and access control options Click: pencil icon > General settings Click: Publication and access control From this page it is possible to configure, for example: Start time and expiry time To set a start or expiry time: i. Click the green rectangle to the right of the text field:

6 ii. iii. From the calendar select the required date. To select the time highlight Amend as necessary (time is in 24hr format): Click: Save e. Configure notification and data management options Click: pencil icon > General settings Click: Notification and data management There are numerous options, including logging the time taken to complete the survey, however, it is acceptable to accept the default settings. If amendments are made, to preserve them click: Save.

7 2. Create the question group a. Click the plus + icon in the top-right corner of the page (to the right of the dropdown menu titled: Question groups). b. Enter a title for the group ie.: Group 1 c. Optional: Enter a description for the group. d. Click: Save question group 3. Create the questions. A question can only be created from within a group. In this instance, as a survey and a group have been created in succession, the question will automatically be created in the newly-created group. To create a question: a. In the top-right corner of the page (to the right of the drop-down menu titled: Question) click the plus + icon b. In the text field titled: Code, enter a value ie.: Qn 1 c. In the text box titled: Question, enter the question text ie.: In this class I will learn more by giving feedback than from receiving feedback. d. From the drop-down menu titled: Question type, select: List (radio) e. Click: Add question f. Add answer options to the question: click the left grid icon:

8 g. Add the answer option: h. To insert a new answer option click the plus + icon to the right of the text field. i. Once completed, click: Save changes Note: answer options can be edited by clicking the pencil icon, or deleted by clicking the bin icon. 4. Test the survey The survey should be tested for error checking and amendments prior to publishing. To test the survey: 1. Click the wheel icon:

9 2. Click Next 3. On completion click: Submit 5. Activate the survey Once the survey has been satisfactorily tested it can be published. a. Select the required survey from the drop-down menu (in top-right corner) named: Survey b. Activate the survey - on the left-hand side, under the heading: Survey, click the green arrow (see image below): c. A confirmatory sign appears:

10 Select the required options ie. save timings etc. Note: whilst a survey s settings cannot be modified when active, a survey can be easily deactivated to allow updating. d. Click: Save/Activate survey e. A confirmatory sign appears: The survey defaults to open access mode, allowing anyone to take the survey. To switch to closed-access mode, click: Switch to closed-access mode Otherwise, to remain in open access mode click: No, thanks. f. A summary appears:

12 Inviting Survey Participants The survey is URL is sent to participants via . To obtain the survey URL: a. Select the required survey from the drop-down menu (in top-right corner) named: Survey b. The survey URL appears at the top of the listed details (highlighted below): c. Copy and paste the URL into an and send to the participants.

13 Stopping A Survey When stopping a survey it is important to consider which mode is required as Lime Survey offers two possibilities: 1. Expiration 2. Deactivation Expiration mode retains all survey responses and data whilst being inaccessible to candidates. Deactivation mode removes all survey responses and data and is also inaccessible to candidates. To stop the survey: the green arrow icon (see image below) indicates the survey is active. To the right of this icon is a small orange square. To halt the survey click the orange square icon. A confirmatory message appears: To stop the survey click on the appropriate button (ie. expire or deactivate). Note: if the survey is deactivated all results (if the survey has been published) are deleted. Although, one solution is to export the results prior to deactivation, then re-import them.

14 Restarting A Survey This applies to a survey that has been halted in expiry mode (see previous section for details). a. Click: pencil icon > General settings b. Click: Publication & access control i. Select a start date/time. ii. Select an expiry date/time. iii. Click: Save The survey, if configured to start immediately, will now be open.

15 Editing Or Creating New Questions Questions cannot be edited or created when either: The survey is running. The survey is stopped but in expiry mode. Instead, to edit or create a new question the survey should be stopped via deactivation mode (see section above: Stopping The Survey). Importantly, once deactivated all survey results are deleted. It is therefore advisable to thoroughly test the survey prior to publishing. Although, one solution is to export the results prior to deactivation, then import the results into another survey. Deleting A Survey 1. Click the house icon located in the top-left corner: 2. From the list: a. Select the required survey (tick the check box). b. Click the bin icon. 3. In the following warning dialogue box click: Delete survey

16 Viewing Survey Results To view the survey results: a. Select the required survey from the drop-down menu (in top-right corner) named: Survey b. Click: Responses & statistics c. Click the page icon:

17 d. The results are displayed as follows: The above results are for a survey comprising one question. Each line represents the submission of one respondent. Obtaining Statistics a. From the responses and statistics page (see above) click the pie chart icon: b. Tick the two check boxes shown below and click: View statistics
