1 Moodle Enhancements This resource guide highlights new features that are now available in the upgraded Moodle 3.1. It also addresses changes to existing features. Coastal Office of Online Learning Keep up to date on recent news in OL and instructional technology by following us on social media:
2 NEW FEATURES Course Home Page Activity or Resource Recycle bin If an assignment or resource is deleted unintentionally, it can be restored using the Recycle bin within 7 days after deletion. After the deletion, refresh the course page by using the icon near the URL that looks similar to the image below. Under Course Administration, click Recycle bin. Look for the activity or resource and click the Restore icon. This will restore it back to your course home page. Activity or Resource Edit Settings All activities and resources contain an additional setting called Tags (keywords for searching and organizing). Block Tags Previously, when the Tags block was added to a course, it would display all tags that had been added to user profiles in the system. Revised
3 There is a NEW option in the block to only display tags that have been added to an individual course. When selecting tags at a course level for the block, tags will need to be added to each activity or resource item, as noted in the above section: Activity or Resource Edit Settings. To modify the block settings after adding the Tag Block to the course, Turn editing on on the course page, find the block, and use the gear dropdown to select Configure Tags Block. From the block settings section, under Tagged items context, choose to display tags from the system or course. Activities Assignment Grading Download Selected Submissions Under the list of all the users on the View all submissions page, is a setting for With selected. There is a NEW option for Download selected submissions. Revised
4 Download Submissions in Folders On the View all submissions page, in the Options section is a NEW option to Download submissions in folders. If each student submits more than one file, then submissions can be downloaded into folders. Each student will have a separate folder that contains his or her submissions. Activity Attendance Settings Report tab The report tab has a NEW option for a Summary Summarizes total, overall, and maximum information for each student s attendance. Revised
5 Activity Forum Previously, when creating a new forum post you had an option to Mail now. The verbiage has changed from Mail now to Send forum post notification with no editing-time delay. There is a NEW option called Pinned. Pinned discussions will appear and stay at the top of the forum. Activity Workshop Under the Submission settings section, the instructor can indicate the Submission attachment allowed file types if the Maximum number of submission attachments is greater than zero. If multiple file types are allowed, separate them with a, (i.e. docx, pdf, xlsx). Under the Feedback section, the instructor can indicate the Feedback attachment allowed file types if the Maximum number of overall feedback attachments is greater than zero. If multiple file types are allowed, separate them with a, (i.e. docx, pdf, xlsx). Activity Student Folder The Student folder activity allows students to upload documents to a folder that is visible to all users in a course. This activity allows for the students to easily share and download other s documents. There are two features of the folder: Students can upload documents - students can upload documents to the student folder which can be visible to all users in the course immediately or after the instructor approves the upload. 6 Take documents from an assignment - Instructors can set the folder to display the student submitted documents from an assignment activity. The instructor can set the files to be approved by them or approved by the student. You can add the student folder activity in your course by following these steps: Turn editing on at the top of the course page, go to the section that you would like to have the folder added and select Add an activity or resource. Choose the Student folder activity. Provide a name for the folder and under the Student folder section choose which mode you would like for the folder: students can upload documents or take documents from an assignment. If you would like, you can change the settings for Maximum number of attachments, Maximum attachment size, and Allowed file types. The setting to determine if files are Approved by default will be set to yes, if you would like to modify this to require teacher approval, use the dropdown option. Instructors also have the ability to set a start and end time for upload and approval. After saving the activity, the instructor can add files to the folder by using the Add files button. If the settings are set to require approval from the instructor, once students add files there will be a dropdown under the Approval column. Revised
7 Resource Folder Show download folder button Under the Content section within the folder settings there is a NEW option to Show download folder button. Block Grade Me The Grade Me block now allows for Forum and Glossary activities that need to be graded to display in the block. In order to have the activities display in the block, they need to have a grade rating associated with the activity. For a Forum or Glossary activity, Turn Editing On on the course page and select the gear icon for the activity that you would like to set a grade rating (maximum grade). Once inside the settings page, go to the Ratings section and select an Aggregate type and enter a Maximum grade. Revised
8 CHANGED FEATURES Course Home Page Section Titles Previously, you would click the Edit dropdown next to the section to change the name of the section. Now, you can click the pencil next to the section title to change the name of the section. Activities Assignment Grading When accessing an assignment to view submissions or grade submissions there is now an additional option. Previously, there would be one link, titled View/grade all submissions, that would take you to a list of submissions and from there you could enter grades. Now, you have the option to View all submissions or go directly into the grading page via Grade. View all Submissions Previously, the icon to access the grading page was a pencil. Now, the icon to access the grading page is a Grade button. Revised
9 Activities Assignment Assignment Student Grading Page The next page is what the grading page for an assignment submission previously looked like. Revised

11 The grading page format has changed. The page will now automatically open in the PDF Annotate editor. If the students submitted their file as a PDF (recommended), the paper will automatically show on the page. You can then use the annotation tools directly in Moodle. If the students submit a word document, the file will show in the right menu so that you can download it. The due date is located in the upper left corner along with the course name and assignment name. In the right hand menu will be the Submission status, Export to portfolio, Grade, and Feedback comments options. After you enter comments and grades, select Save changes at the bottom of the screen. You can then navigate to the next or previous user by using the left and right arrows in the top right hand corner of the page. You can also choose a student s name from the dropdown list. Revised
12 Attendance Report tab Previously, in the attendance activity under the Reports tab, there was a column for P, E, L and A. This would list each student s number of present, excused, late, and absence attendance. Now, the number of taken sessions is displayed, along with the points and grade percentage. Revised
13 Feedback Export to Excel Previously, the option to Export to Excel was located under the Analysis tab. Now, export is referred to as Download and is located under the Show Responses tab. Revised
