The History The Office web site has been through 3 major changes in its life, from Office Update, Tools for the Web and now Office Online. With a few milestones remaining before the launch of Office 12, we have a lot of work ahead of us in order to create the 4 th generation of the Office Online web site. Starting with the Information Architecture redesign, slated for M4, we will work on a phased approach that will build on the ideas presented in this book leading us towards the Office Online redesign for Office 12. Of Ap Office Online September 2003 Tools on the Web September 2003 Tools on the Web March 2002 Office Update January 2000
Proposed Global Site Map The main objective of this project was the redesign of the Information Architecture for the Office Online website. The Office Online web site is growing and the Information Architecture needs to reflect a scalable solution for site redesigns moving forward. This diagram represents the proposed site architecture and how content will be organized across the network and persistent areas of the site.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Client Board Review - Proposed Site Designs The goal of the client board review was to present the two schemes that best represented solutions that solved the site objectives and included featured learned during the Exploration phase. The following schemes represent two very distinct approaches for the Office Online Information Architecture redesign. Scheme A - Network Navigation Scheme B - M Home Page Product Page Home Page!!!!!
Client Board Review - Proposed Network Navigation Scheme The Network Navigation scheme proposed persistent network navigation across the top portion of the site in place of the static masthead we have today. This is valuable real estate and we feel this space should be utilized for top tier and persistent navigation on the Office Online web site. The left side navigation is product centric and contextualized based on the user s experience. Scheme A - Network Navigation Home Page IA wireframe Home Page visual design!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Client Board Review - Proposed Network Navigation Scheme The Product page shows how the left hand navigation is contextualized to user s experience within the MS WORD home page. Here we show how Tips and Techniques, Templates and Training are scoped for the WORD only page. The horizontal navigation remains persistent. Scheme A - Network Navigation Product Page IA wireframe Product Page visual design!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Client Board Review - Proposed Masthead Scheme The Masthead scheme assumes that the top masthead area is sacred and cannot be utilized for programmed navigation or content. This scheme was developed based on the assumption the MNP/MRF guidelines would dictate this expensive and valuable real estate. This scheme relies on the left hand navigation to show the depth and breadth of the site offerings on the home page but still provides a contextual experience on subsequent pages. See Page 11. Scheme B - Masthead Home Page IA wireframe Home Page visual design!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Client Board Review - Proposed Masthead Scheme The Masthead scheme uses a simple rollup horizontal navigation that represents the high level content buckets on the homepage. The navigation is now a series of horizontal drop downs used to free up the left hand navigation for a more contextual user experience. Scheme B - Masthead Product Page IA wireframe Product Page visual design!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Selected Scheme A - A Lay of the Land During the Client Board review it was clear that everyone wanted to pursue the Network Navigation Scheme further to see how it might test in front of users in our usability labs. The following pages represent secondary and tertiary pages that were built around Scheme A in order to create a working prototype used for testing. 20 Content Modules - InfoPane The info pane is one of the most important areas for rendering content on each top tier page. Below are a few variations on how we might utilize the info pane across the site. The goal is to increase the feature image size, provide a more prominent feature title, show related topics for that day, and up sell or cross promote our product line. The key to the right show where this content is located within the page design.
Content Modules - Clip Art and Downloads Similar to the info pan, the clip art module has been redesigned to be more flexible and take advantage of more actionable tasks directly inline. Again, we re showing a few variations on this theme. The key to the right show where this content is located within the page design.
Content Modules - Features and Quick Links The features and quick links module is also meant to be dynamic and flexible in order to leverage daily programming needs. A key component of this module is defining the 3 conceptual navigation areas: Help and how to, Enhance and extend, and Evaluate and compare. These studies show various ways to help user gain a better understanding of these 3 areas by associating content types with links. The key to the right show where this content is located within the page design.

This study consisted of a traditional free sort and validation card sort activities. The main goal of this study was to determine how users organize, categorize, and label information on the Office Online site and to use these results to inform the site s architecture and left-navigation. The secondary goal was to determine which content items and categories are confusing for users.
