2 Requirements The purpose of my website is to have an online portfolio to show my design work. It will also contain my resume, information about me, and contact. The site will serve as a place for prospective clients and future employers to view my work and see whether they would want to hire me. I want the site to be clean and clear with easy navigation, where the main focus is on my projects. It will also show the type of design work that I do. It will also be a place where friends, family, and other designers will be able to view what I have been working on. I will update my site with new projects as I create new ones, as well as take off older projects if I find they are no longer relevant. After this class I hope to continue to use the site for my portfolio.

3 User Scenarios Scenario 1 Task: Create Portfolio Website User Group 1: Employer Background Michael is a 42 year old co-founder of Phillips design studio in New York. His studio is well known and established in the design industy. Phillips design studio has won numerous awards and has been featured in AIGA online, GRID and Print magazines. Their clients include MoMa, School of Visual Arts, Nyc Transit Authority, and many others. They excel in all areas of graphic design, but are known for clean effective use of typography and unique, well-thought concepts. They are always extremely busy with projects, but value a work/life balance and occasional time off. Scenario Michael is in charge of hiring interns for the summer of The studio usually hires two interns and start taking applications in mid March. The hiring process is very tedious as the studio gets numerous s everyday. The design of the websites he goes through in the application process is very important. They have to be clear, well thought out, and reflect the work of the designer well. A basic understanding of web development should be apparent. As there are many different websites to look through, he notices a few that stand out because of their simplicity and familiarity of design, and no excess of flashy features or distractions. The name on the top of the webpage reading Andrew Argue is very memorable as it is the first thing that he sees on the page. Next, the work that is easily accessable right close to his name is strong, with descriptions that are concise, relevant, and interesting. After scrolling through the work, it is easy to navigate to the next project as there is a next project link easily accessable. The heading that navigates from different pages is always visable. Michael views Andrew s portfolio as strong with a clean presentation of a website that allows for each project to stand out. Scenario 2 Task: Create Portfolio Website User Group 2: Client Background Charlotte is a 28 year old new business owner for a new art gallery in Calgary. She has saved up a lot to open this gallery and is looking for a talented designer to create an information booklet on the opening exhibit. The booklet contains additional information about the newly opened gallery and about Charlotte. She is a recent graduate of the business school of the University of Calgary and also has a Bachelor of Fine Art from the Alberta College of Art and Design. She is hoping to be able to continue with her passion of painting while also helping new artists become recognized through her gallery in the Calgary Art community. Scenario As Charlotte is adamant about supporting local artists in her community, she looks toward the ACAD website when seeking out a designer. She is hoping to save the expense of hiring a well established design studio as she has a clear budget and does not want to be in any more debt after investing a lot into her new gallery. She looks at the graphic design majors available on the ACAD website and looks through every one of their portfolio websites. Andrew Argue s portfolio stands out as there is diversity that reflects well each of the content that he designs for. The website is also easy to navigate. She thinks the clean look would coincide well the booklet for the art gallery. She is not too knowledgable about design, but is familiar with the basics of typography. His layouts are all easy to follow with obvious hierarchy and attention to detail. She is comfortable navigating Andrew s website as she is an avid web user very familiar with sites and web environments.

5 Competetive Analysis I found that the sites that I enjoyed the most were very clean and simple as this allowed the work to stand out. I also liked when a strong accent color was used to help with hierarchy and energize the design. I found that sites that went straight to the work on the homepage to be most effective because that is what most people coming to the site are interested in. It didn t cause the user to load another page.

8 Outstanding Issues I am concerned about my current knowledge of CSS to be able to make the website fully functional and achieve all the affects that I want. I want to figure out how to use other typefaces rather than just using the default fonts found in CSS. I am also concerned about how easy it will be to add content after I have finished the site and if I have to make a lot of adjustments to do this. I am concerned about having quality photographs of my work to add to the site.
