1 4 ACC Card Sort Report Wunderman 4/16/16 This report presents the results of a card sort activity with one participant group. The focus was on the group s decision making and final categories and category labels. Derived from the activity is a recommendation information architecture and navigation structure

5 8 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The facilitators conducted a card sort test with 32 cards and a total of 5 participants in one collaborative group session. The participants organized the provided cards into categorical groups; whereupon, the groups were labeled. In addition, ideas for newly relevant content were documented. Recommendations include: Using the similarly grouped cards to inform related topics on the website Using new categories to inform the overall structure of the website Seeking to group topics with related categories, rather than seeking to silo the content, allowing users to more easily find what they are looking for TEST OBJECTIVE The card sort test was conducted to help shape the information architecture for the redesign of nycacc.org. The facilitator sought to uncover an understanding of how participants from various backgrounds and roles expected to see content organized on a usability- focused website. PARTICIPANTS The total number of individuals who attempted the card sort was 5, Of those, 5 completed the sort. METHODOLOGY The facilitators conducted the card sort using physical index cards. As an open card sort, participants organized 32 phrases into categories that they would expect to find on a usability- focused website. They then labeled each category. The cards were randomized for the participant group. Appendix A contains the complete list of sorted cards. DATA COLLECTED The facilitators collected two forms of data: Qualitative: Qualitative data including key observations of participants and their comments. Quantitative: Quantitative data including card sort activity and content groupings.

6 9 participants collaborate to determine new content groupings RESULTS CARD GROUPING Initially, participants were confused by the array of topics and the relevancy between them. The group persisted and created a new taxonomy of these topics which is outlined in the groupings below. These are the proposed navigation buckets. This organization supports the hierarchy of information the participants felt was most valuable to the core site audience. Seven Navigation Categories CATEGORIES Top Content Elements per Group The following table lists the top content elements per group, in order of strength of agreement, for the audience. The categories appearing at the top were listed as most hierarchy important by participants. Those included adoption listings as well as helpful resources and materials relating to animal adoption and care.

7 10 New Content Recommendations A new navigation category was developed from the card sort, Local Community. The idea that the nycacc.org website should be NYC centric can make a significant contribution to the website s success. This would be an advantageous opportunity because ACC s services are focused on NYC and the surrounding local regions. CARD SORT COMMENTS Adoption and education content should encompass both pet care as well as services. RECOMMENDATIONS There should be a reduction and reorganization of the primary navigation as well as article content presently on nycacc.org. The new navigation categories are simple and offer user- friendly terms. We recommend using these findings as a basis for further investigation of a reimagined information architecture for the redesigned site.
