We will cover How's and Why's, and more specifically, focus on managing title blocks, Schedules, Tag Families, Visibility Graphics and Filters. Working as a detailer using AutoCAD, Fabrication CADmep, Fabrication ESTmep Fabrication CAMduct, NavisWorks and Revit, he gained valuable industry knowledge as well as trade knowledge while working for contractors large and small. He also has extensive experience in product support. While working with TSI for the past 4 years, Seth has overseen the support department as well as steered the direction of Addins produced by TSI. 2 Best Practices It is important to think about what information you will need for each project. Properly managing information that can be used across all projects instead of just what you will need in a current project can greatly reduce unneeded clutter. Things like title blocks, families, dimension and annotation types and annotation tags all add to a projects size. Title Blocks Customize title blocks to reduce repeated data entry. Editing the Title Block Templates use Labels to reflect Project Information. When you fill in your Project Information, the values will be automatically reflected in your sheets. To edit a title block, simply go to the Application Menu and navigate to the title block you would like to edit. From there you will be able to customize the type of information it reflects. LABELS IN A TITLE BLOCK CAN BE EDITED OR REMOVED Page 2

3 Families Consider what you are using the template for. As an example, if you are creating an MEP template, you may not need all of the default wall, door and window families in the default Mechanical Template. You can browse the families that are loaded into the template and use Purge Unused to get rid of families you won t use. LOOK FOR FAMILIES THAT WILL NOT BE USED BY YOUR ORGANIZATION Dimension and Annotation Types Create new or modify existing Dimension and Annotation Types. For many contractors, looking at your dimension styles and text styles in your AutoCAD templates is a good place to start. Editing Dimension Types and Text Types In the Annotate Tab you are able to edit, remove or add dimension and text types. Page 3

4 SELECT THE TYPE OF DIMENSION YOU WOULD LIKE TO EDIT CLICK THE ARROW ON THE BOTTOM RIGHT OF TEXT TO EDIT TEXT TYPES Annotation Tags Annotation Tags are an important part of any template. Tags that are specific to Fabrication parts should be created and loaded into your template. Add parameters from the left column to the right column to create tags to match your company standards. 6 Creating Fabrication Parts Schedules When creating a new schedule, select the category for what you are looking to have in the schedule. The categories marked with MEP Fabrication will filter the Fabrication Parts in Revit ITM s SELECT AN MEP FABRICATION CATEGORY TO FILTER ITM S Move the Available fields that you would like to report on from the left column to the right column. You can select multiple categories by holding ctl or shift. Page 6

7 SELECT PARAMETERS TO REPORT AND MOVE THEM TO THE RIGHT COLUMN You can then use the schedule properties to Filter, Sort/Group, Format and change the appearance of the schedule USE THE SCHEDULE PROPERTIES TO FORMAT YOUR SCHEDULE Apply Service Colors to Duct and Pipe You can use Visibility/Graphic Filters to apply your Fabrication service colors to your services in Fabrication Parts in Revit. This can be done per view or added to the View Templates. Page 7

8 ADDING V/G OVERRIDE FILTERS VIA VIEW TEMPLATES In Manage View Templates, select the view template name you would like to update or duplicate an existing one, then select V/G Overrides Filters. Click Edit/New to create a new filter to apply to the V/G filters list. ADD A NEW FILTER TO THE FILTERS LIST Select the mep Fabrication category to set the Filter Rules for the filter, then set the Filter Rules Page 8

9 SET THE FILTER RULES FOR YOUR NEW FILTER Next add the new filter to the Visibility/Graphics Override Filters list. ADD YOUR NEW FILTER TO THE VIEW TEMPLATE Page 9

10 Once the new filter has been added to the view template, click on the Lines Override to edit the color of the lines. This color will control the pipe or duct color for the view template. Use the chart at to match the AutoCAD color to the equivalent RGB color value. For Example, my HHWR ACAD layer color is 33. This equals an RGB color value of 189,157,126 ADJUST THE RGB COLOR VALUES TO MATCH YOUR FABRICATION SERVICE COLOR After you have setup your new filter you can apply to views by right clicking on the view and selecting Apply Template Properties. You can use ctl or shift to apply it to multiple views. APPLY TEMPLATE PROPERTIES TO VIEWS Page 10
