1 Wiki Tutorial In this tutorial you will learn to 1. Join the UofR wiki 2. Make a new wiki 3. Permissions on the wiki i. Change permissions on the wiki 4. Edit pages on the wiki 5. Adding pages to the wiki. 6. Creating links and adding images to your wiki. 7. Updating your wiki 1. Join the UofR wiki a. Go to b. To join this wiki, click the button join to the upper right corner. c. You will be directed to this page:
2 d. Enter a username and password and an address. Please make note of the username and password to gain access to your wikispaces account. 2. Make a new wiki e. Next click Yes in the make a wiki option. f. Enter a wiki name. o Please keep your wiki name simple, with no spaces in the name. For example: hist210 or ed800 (remember to use small caps) o Please remember the name of your wiki- You will want students to gain access to your wiki by directing them to your wiki. o Your wikispaces account will automatically become (this is the web address you will give to your students) 3. Permissions on the wiki g. Wiki permissions
3 o It is important to set your wiki permissions to either of the following Public Anyone and everyone has access to your wiki to edit or comment on it. Protected Allows everyone to view your wiki, but only wiki members (who you can control) can edit the pages of your wiki. Private Only members can view and edit wiki pages. If someone accessed your wiki and was not a member, the following page will appear. If they decide to join your wiki, you can decide to give them access or not. o You can change the permissions of your wiki at anytime. Go to Manage wiki in the left navigation bar of your screen. Click the permissions button under the People section.
4 h. Change your permissions. Click UPDATE ** Please note that in the protected permission, you can grant permission to them to post messages to your wiki. This way non-members can view and post comments on your wiki. They cannot edit content unless they become members of the wiki. Once you have finished deciding the permission for your wiki. Click JOIN.
5 4. Editing pages on the wiki a. Once you click Join, you will be directed to this page on your wiki. Your wiki name Default home page. Edit button. b. By default, wikispaces creates a home page for you. This is where you will introduce your wiki to your audience. c. Editing your home page. o Click the edit button to the upper far right corner of your page.
6 o This page will become similar to that of a word processor page. You will notice an editor toolbar, to the top of the page. This toolbar allows you to change the text, add bulleted text, change colour etc. Visual Editor Visual Editor Toolbar To make text BOLD, Italic, or underlined. To change the font type and colour of the text. To change the size of the text. To add bulleted text o Add the introduction to the text and once done, click SAVE. *** Please don t forget to SAVE!! Your content will disappear if you don t save your text. o This is what your page should look like
7 5. Adding pages to the wiki o In the navigation bar, click the new page button to the top left of the page. New page button Navigation bar - o Enter a page name ***Please note Keep the naming system simple (one to two words). Your next page could be named activity or module 1. o Click create.
8 o The visual editor will appear once again. Add content to this page and click SAVE. o The page will automatically appear in the navigation bar. New page Once you have finished creating pages on the wiki, you can sign out (top right corner) and come back the wiki at a later date. Sign out of your account 6. Creating links and adding images to the wiki o To add a link on a wiki page, click the page and then the edit button. o Type in the text you want linked. o SELECT the part of the text you want linked or the entire sentence if need be. o Click the link button as shown below. Link button o Click the external link tab
9 o Copy the link of the page your want the text linked to and paste it in the box shown below. o Check the new window box to External open the link wind tab ow in a new box. Highlight text you want linked Type/copy the address and paste here. Click here when done o To add images, click the image box on the toolbar. o First, upload the image from your computer by clicking the click here to use our single file upload tool. o Browse for the image and click the upload button. o When the image is uploaded, a small icon will appear below as seen in the second image below. o Double-click the image once to insert into the page. **** Please ensure that you have COPYRIGHT clearance for the images you are uploading or using in your wiki. 10 Upload files tab Select this to upload one file at a time. Click upload when you re done selecting the file from your computer Thumbnail of the image Double-click to insert 7. Updating the wiki o Go to o Sign in (top right corner of the page) to your account (ie. The username and password you created for your wikispaces account.)
11 o To gain access to your wiki, click the my wikis link to the top right corner of your page and select your wiki (the name of your wiki will appear under the link) Your wiki should appear in this box
