Introduction to Moodle: Creating & Sharing Content Aim This guide will help to get you started and develop your understanding of how to add, edit and create courses using Moodle. This guide is for Moodle version 3.0 Content 1. Getting started 2. Titles 3. Managing Resources i. URL ii. Files iii. Folder iv. Page & images v. Hiding resources 4. Managing Blocks 5. Further Activities 6. Adding activities 7. Appendix 1: Supporting Information (Main icons & Text editor) 8. Appendix 2: Further Reading & Resources Introduction to Moodle Academic Technology, Warwick University - July 2016 v1.1

1 Getting Started Visit Login using your university ID and password You will need a Moodle course area (e.g. a blank sandbox course) where you can act as an editing teacher. You may be able to access this course using the link to My courses in the Navigation block. If you can t find your course or need help please check with your departmental Moodle coordinator or contact the ITS Moodle development team (Academic Technology). Please navigate to your course area and check that you have editing rights by confirming that you can see the Turn editing on link at the top of the course screen: When you select on Edit you will see that a number of icons and editing options appear, as in the image below, please note that these icons may vary depending on the formatting options: Note: you can also turn editing on and off in the Administration block (usually on the left and towards the bottom of the screen). 2

2 Titles With editing turned ON, add a course title to the top of the course area by selecting the editing icon, a small cog. For example: Once you have added the course title add a topic title to the first and second topic boxes. Using the editing cog icon in each topic section. 3

3 Managing Resources i) URL Add a URL link to an external website; with editing turned on, select Scroll down to RESOURCES > select URL Give the URL a name. Add a brief description. Now type (or paste) your web address into the External URL box. You can expand the Appearance section for more options. ii) Files You can easily add files to your course by dragging and dropping them onto sections* This same process can be used to add a folder of files by dragging and dropping a zipped folder. *Please note drag and drop does not work with Internet Explorer 9 or earlier. 4

Adding a File by Upload Select Scroll down to RESOURCES > select File > Add Give the file a Name and add a brief Description Select the icon to add a file, then use the file picker to Upload a file. Browse for the file, then select Upload this file. Expand the Appearance section for further options. For display options force download is a good choice if you want the learner to be able to save or open the file. Select Save and return to course and check the link to the file. Repeat this process with other files (try using different file types). iii) Folder To add a folder, select 5

Scroll down to RESOURCES > select Folder then Add Give the folder a name & a brief description Use Add to add 2 or 3 files to your folder Optional: Use Create folder to create a sub-folder and try adding or moving files into this new folder too. Note: Although you can add files one at a time you can also upload many files in one go by using a zip file. Add all your documents in one folder, zip up the folder and then upload and unzip in Moodle. Once you have created a folder you will be able to edit the contents when viewing the folder using the Edit button. iv) Page Add a Page to your course with text and an image With editing turned on, select and select Page Give your page a Name and a brief Description then add some text content in the Page content window. (Take care: The Page content text field looks the same as the Description field) Add some text and experiment with some of the editor functions and options. 6

Optional: On text fields, use the Toggle toolbar button ( ) to expand the editor toolbar and allow for further functionality. Try adding an image by selecting the Insert/Edit Image ( ) icon in the HTML editor Select Find or upload an image Browse, choose and select an image. Add a description > select Insert. v) Hiding resources With editing turned on you will see an eye icon next to each resource and activity. The open-eye icon means an item is visible to students. A line will appear across the eye when you select it to indicate that the item will be hidden completely from students. When items are hidden they will still be visible to an editing teacher but will appear greyed-out. Note: You can achieve the same effect when editing any item (e.g. file, page etc.), by using the item settings and switching Visible to Hide, underneath the Common module settings section. Optional: Choose one of your resources (e.g. file, page, or folder) and hide it. You can check that the resource is hidden by switching your role to the student role. You can do this by going to: Settings > Switch role to > Student When you have finished checking that the item is hidden from the student view you will need to select: Settings > Return to my normal role 7

4 Managing Blocks Blocks are resource and information items that can be added to the side of any page in Moodle. Apart from the Navigation and Settings blocks, they can be moved or deleted. With editing turned on, you are able to move a block to a different position by left-selecting and dragging the block to where you want it. Optional: Try adding an additional block to your course. With editing turned on, select the dropdown menu in the Add a block block. This will usually be at the bottom left of your course. 8

5. Further activities: Experiment with adding a label (see Add a resource > Label) If you have time try creating a Book resource; see more information here: Experiment moving your resources. You can change their order by dragging items around using the arrows icon Find out more about some of the standard blocks here: 6. Adding Activities Use the Add an activity link to add a sample activity. (E.g. choice, forum or assignment activity) You can find out more about each of the activities and how they work here - 9

Appendix 1: Supporting information A: Main Icons Update or edit a resource Duplicate a resource or activity Edit name of resource Assign roles Move left & right use these to indent items e.g. to create a hierarchy Move use this icon to drag and drop your resources Delete Hide a resource; prevents students from seeing items B: The Text Editor The text editor is used throughout Moodle and has a range of options and icons, some of which may be familiar to anyone who uses a word processor. See more information about the text editor here: Some key items include: - Font, size and heading - Undo and Redo - Find and Replace - Full screen toggle - Line format - Text effect (Bold, Italic, Underline, Subscript, superscript) - Colour options (text and highlight colours) - Number, Bullets and indents - hyperlink options 10
