Facebook (Facebook) FeaturesOverview This table shows you Facebook features and how they work. It s not formatted in the most user-friendly manner. I will update this file eventually with one that is. More details are in Facebook s Help Center, YouTube also has many how-to videos about Facebook. Most of them are confusing. Here is one that is good: NOTE: Facebook frequently changes how privacy and access settings work. What is described in this document is valid as of Aug Name Used For Image Home The page you see first when you Facebook Home Page Page and log in to Facebook. News It chronologically shows all the Feed activities that you and your friends have chosen to share with each other. The left column of the home page is devoted to links for a variety of features, some described here. The items in this column may only be easily accessed from the Home page. The center of the Home Page is the News Feed. The right column houses Facebook promotions and ads. Control what you see by: o Sorting stories:use the Sort menu in the top right of your news feed to choose which stories you see first. Click Most Recent to see stories in the order they were posted, or click Top Stories to see at the top of your News Feed what most of your friends are reading. o Filtering by friend lists:click one of your lists on the left side of your home page to see stories just from the people on that list. REACH: A UU Digital Ministry Program, June Herold

Timeline or Profile o Managing the updates you're subscribed to:hover over the Friends button at the top of a friend's profile (timeline) and select Show in News Feed to turn their updates on or off. You can also select Settings to control how many and what kinds of stories you see from them. o Hiding a person or a type of story (ex: quizzes or games):hover over the topright menu of a story, click the drop-down menu and choose what you'd like to hide:hiding story will remove the story you're looking athide all by and Unsubscribe from will remove the story you're looking at, as well as all future stories from a person, Page, group, event or app. o Report story or spam will remove the story you're looking at and help keep your news feed clear of stories like it in the future o Undoing a mistake: If you accidentally hide something you want to see, click the Undo link. The Timeline page is the official representation of you on Facebook. If you allow your name to be searchable in Facebook, then a link to your Timeline will result on a search of your name. You can decide how much, if any, of your Timeline content will be visible to searchers. To get to Timeline click, your name or your photo in the upper right of the Home page. Click that. Timeline is where personal information such as interests, relationship status, education, work A detail of a Timeline that shows a Status Update and posted content. REACH: A UU Digital Ministry Program, June Herold

history and other tidbits of personal information are stored. It also contains all of the content you have posted. Friends can visit your Timeline page to see everything you ve chosen to make visible. Timeline is also the name given to a template design that Facebook uses for Pages, which represent businesses, organizations and public figures, including celebrities. One of the most used features of Timeline is the Status box. It s a quick way to broadcast to friends what you are thinking, something you witnessed, a thought for the day etc. A status comment is broadcasted to all your friends via their News Feed. Status comments don t appear in the News Feedsof Groups you belong to or in Pages you ve liked. You create a Status comment in a rectangle box, or input cell, that appears on your Home page or on your Timeline. A Status comment can include a photo and other data as well. You can download a backup copy of all information that you ve posted to your church s Timeline. REACH: A UU Digital Ministry Program, June Herold

Pages Pages are meant to be for professional or official use, and allow an organization, business, celebrity or band to maintain a presence on Facebook.Churches typically appear as a Page. All Pages are viewable by the general public, meaning people who are not on Facebook and those who are. Someone who isn t a Facebook member, however, would have to join the network to be able to leave comments. Any Facebook user can like a Page to become connected with it and get news feed updates. There is no limit to how many people can like a Page. Any account holder can create a Page. He or she can also name other users to help administer it. Admins create and share posts under the Page s name. Their own doesn t appear on the page. They can also create customized apps for their Pages.People who connect to your Page won't know who its admin(s) is. Some ministers have created Pages, from within their personal accounts, to represent a specific ministry for which they administer the Page as well as lead the ministry. The visual design for Pages is the same as Timeline. The difference, however, is that Pages come with administrative tools. These tools, among other benefits, tell you if the content you post is effectively engaging viewers. Before the Page feature was introduced, some organizations and ministers used Groups for ministries. You still can choose to use Groups for your church. But Pages offermore flexibility in content display and usage analysis. Admin Panel for Pages REACH: A UU Digital Ministry Program, June Herold

For more on Pages, see Insights Usage Statistics of a Page: Subscribe You can allow people who are not your friends to subscribe to yourtimeline content you designate as Public. Go to your Account Settings and click on Subscribers to set it up. When you friend someone, you re automatically subscribed to his or her activities. You canalso follow the Timelines of journalists, celebrities, political figures and other people you re interested. You can get their public updates in your news feed by going to their Timeline and clicking on a Subscribe button that appears if that account holder has set his or her Account Settings to enable subscriptions. To the right of your name in the blue bar that is atop all Facebook pages, you ll see an arrow. Click it and then select Account Settings. You ll land on the below box. Subscribers is a link in the left column. Click that to set up Subscriptions to your content Once you subscribe, you can see their public posts in your news feed. REACH: A UU Digital Ministry Program, June Herold

Pages do not have Subscribe buttons. To get updates from a Page to automatically appear in your News Feed, you Like them. The Subscribe button appears to the right of of the Timeline owner s name. Groups Groupsare small gatherings of people focused on specific interests. Any account holder can create them. That person must approve individuals for membership. There are three types of privacy settings for Groups: 1) Open: Anyone on Facebook can see the group, who s in it and its activity; 2)Closed: Anyone can see the Group and its Activity but only Members can post; 3) Secret: Only members see the group, who s in it and can post. Members can Follow the comment threads of specific posts. They will be notified when there are updates to it. When a group reaches a certain size, some features are limited. In groups, members receive notifications by default when any member posts in the group. Members can participate in chats, upload photos to shared albums, collaborate on Group-stored documents, and invite members who are friends to group events. In addition, Groups have their own search engine. You can search the contents of a Group from within to revisit a topic or learn from its archived wisdom. You can t, however, backup a Group s content to a hard REACH: A UU Digital Ministry Program, June Herold

Lists drive or to a cloud. Lists help you to manage viewing rights to your content no matter where it appears on Facebook. They also are used to determine access rights to other aspects of your Facebook experience. The List tool is hard to find on Facebook because labeling of it isn t consistent. To get to the tool, look in the left column of your Facebook home page. That column is divided into sections. Look for the one that says Friends" in light gray type. Roll your cursor over the label. The word more appears. Click it to get to the tool. Your friends aren t notified when you add or remove them from Lists. You can create your own lists, and Facebook provides the following lists for convenience. Close Friends: Add your best friends to this list to prioritize them in see more of them in your news feed and get notified each time they post. Acquaintances: This list is for friends you don t need to stay in close touch with. People on your acquaintances list will rarely show up in your news feed. Restricted: This list is for people you ve added as a friend but just don t want to share with, like your boss. When you add someone to your Restricted list, they will only be able to see your Public content. Lists also are used to determine who can see what you post. Forexample, I put all of my game-playing friends into my game player block list. By doing so, I ensure that I have the choice of limiting them only to my posts about games. Getting to the List tool and options depends on the context you want to use it in. To see all your lists, create new ones and manage them, the left column of your home page has an area that looks like this. Roll over the word friends then click the More link to see the lists. Or go directly to its url: Here s the page you land on: Go to a friend s Timeline and click on the REACH: A UU Digital Ministry Program, June Herold

Friends button that appears to the right of your friend s name. A menu appears with options that let you put that friend into a list. Lists also appear in the Audience Finder, which is represented by this icon: Click the icon to see the following menu of choices, which includes your lists. If you choose to restrict your audience, the content will only be visible to those you allow. Those who have been restricted won t see the content on your Timeline or Page or in their News Feeds You can Add people to Lists from their REACH: A UU Digital Ministry Program, June Herold

Timelines. Underneath a profile photo and to the right on all Timelines is a Message tab that has a tiny gear icon and error beside it. Click it to reveal the Add to Interest Lists link. Activity Log This feature is the aspect of Timeline that comes closest to really being a timeline. It s practically useless and barely noticeable. You click a link on Timeline to get to it. The log is a no-frills, chronological, text list of what you ve done on Facebook. If a story is to be told to our Facebook friends through our Timelines, only a glimpse of one becomes apparent in the log. And it is only visible to its owner. Activity Box: An excerpt of the log: It appears right on the Timeline page and shows some of your most recent activity to whoever visits. You cannot remove the box from your Timeline page but you can manually hide items that appear in it. REACH: A UU Digital Ministry Program, June Herold

Apps Apps are created by third party developers and not typically by Facebook. They are free add-ons that offer functionality and features that Facebook doesn t build. Examples of apps: games; music players, and apps that major media news apps of their content. Standalone web sites such as Goodreads, offer an app to enable Facebook friends to share their book collections and discuss them. When a friend adds an app to his or her account; that person s friends are notified of it in their News Feed/Home page. When this friend does something in the app, the activity is sent to the News Feeds of that person s friends. Third party providers often incent users to like apps in order to get freebies. The benefit to the provider is the free exposure the like generates to friends. Here are a few applications I ve added to my Facebook experience: Remove or revise permissions given to the third-party provider of the app: REACH: A UU Digital Ministry Program, June Herold

Privacy Settings Permissions settings determine who can see what you post, and who can contact you. You can set them to decide whether you want to receive automatic notifications on your Home page of activity by your friends and the groups and pages you have liked. This means, that even though a friend makes her activity available to you, you do not have to accept it. You decline it by unsubscribing to its appearance in your News Feed. She won t know whether you re really looking at it! You can also hide all content from an individual on your Timeline, but still receive notifications of her activities by clicking on the tiny globe icon to the left of the Facebook search bar at the top of any type of Facebook page. Hiding and unsubscribing are two of the only actions on Facebook that aren t broadcast to friends. Facebook, however, may still show you content that a friend liked regardless of your privacy setting. It just won t be in your News Feed. The notice will show up in the right column of your Home page within the promotional and advertising space. You remain friends with individuals even though you hide or unsubscribe to their content. You can still see what they are up to by visiting their Timeline pages. You set privacy controls in a variety of ways but these are the most important ones to know about: 1. In the Settings area associated with each account holder, you choose default choices that control who sees what and who can contact you. The Controls menu is to the right of your name, which appears in the upper right corner of all Facebook web pages.click the arrow next to Home. Your settings options appear in a pulldown menu. Click Privacy settings to land on the next image, where you make your choices: REACH: A UU Digital Ministry Program, June Herold

Notes Photos Messages 2. Every box on your Timeline or Page has an option for you to choose among these choices for who can see it: public, friends, lists of people you created from your friends, or only you. 3. If you add an app to your account, the vendor supplying it must ask for permission to post to your News Feed. It has to ask for other permissions as well. You can always change your mind later and unsubscribe or hide it from your News Feed. However, that app will still be associated with your account. The only way to delete it from your account is through the Account section of the Settings area. If you don t delete the app, the vendor may still get data through Facebook s developer tools on your behavior. Your name won t be associated with it. The vendor will get macro data to use for marketing purposes. You can t import a blog into a Timeline. If you want to share your blog posts on Facebook, you post a link to it in your Status line. But you can also write lengthy text in the Notes tool and then open them up for comment. You get to Notes from your Timeline. Notes do not return in search results on Facebook. Upload photos, write captions and decide who can see them. Organize them into albums. Photos do not return in Facebook search results Messaging is an internal system that lets you send messages to other users. Many users opt to receive messages only from friends. Others allow any Facebook user to message them. Messages are private and do not return in Facebook s search How to hide friend posted-content in your News Feed: Roll your cursor to the blank upper right corner of the box containing the item. An arrow will appear, click it to get choices: REACH: A UU Digital Ministry Program, June Herold
