1. Introduction Amazon Webstore by Amazon.com helps business owners and companies create their own online store using a website builder. Webstore provides customers with different tools and resources to help build and customize their store such as adding widgets, adding Amazon features, and uploading products, choosing themes, and creating and managing inventories. A usability test was conducted by using the current version of Webstore on the test administrator s laptop. Camtasia software recorded the screen capture of users and a microphone recorded their comments. Each session captured the users navigation, tasks, positive/negative feedback, questions, and emotions. The test was used to fulfill two courses: WR 510 Usability/Metrics and WR 527 Technical Editing. 2. Executive Summary The usability tests were conducted May in Portland, OR. The purpose of the test was to evaluate Webstore s interface, performance, navigability, functionality, and usefulness to the user. Five users participated in the test. Each session included 9 different tasks and lasted from 45 minutes to an hour. The test guidelines were consistent for each session. The test found that most users could navigate Webstore and complete the assigned tasks successfully. All of the users, after completing basic tasks, felt comfortable with Webstore and were interested in exploring other features. All of the users recommended different ways to improve the website s appearance and clarity. The test identified some problems such as: a) Problems uploading an image to the product b) Frustration with the Assign a Product pop-up window c) Text heavy Online Help and documentation d) Confusion with unfamiliar terms when creating a product e) Unclear progress bars/status windows f) Confusion with button placement g) Feeling overwhelmed with too many options The report contains user feedback, tasks completion times and rates, ease/difficulty with specific tasks, errors encountered, and recommendations for improvement. A copy of the scenarios, questions, and surveys are included in the Appendix. 3

3. Methodology 3.1. Test Goals The evaluation will show if users can complete each task with or without help documentation, as well as to test if Webstore s language, design, and directions are intuitive enough for the average user. If the tasks are not clear, the test will identify ways to improve the user experience Sessions The test administrator arranged each session informing the users of the test and scheduling a time for the recording. Each session lasted approximately 45 minutes to an hour. Sessions were conducted in the recording room of the Writing Center, Millar Library, and the administrator s home. Sessions were recorded with Camtasia software, a microphone, and a Toshiba laptop computer. Internet Explorer 8 was the default browser. During the sessions, the test administrator explained the goal of the test, answered any questions, and asked the users to complete an introductory survey and sign an agreement (see Appendix).Users were assured that the test emphasized the website and not the users performance. Users were then given a list of task scenarios to complete and used the website to find the information. The test administrator read aloud each task and gave the user a copy Evaluation Tasks/Scenarios The administrator created the task scenarios. Scenarios included finding information and completing different tasks using the website. Users were encouraged to use Help but to avoid Search (See Appendix for a complete list of the scenarios/tasks). Users attempted to complete the following tasks: a) Add a product to an inventory b) Upload an image to the product c) Create a category and assign the product d) Select and apply a theme e) Change business name f) Find shipping rates g) Delete a product h) Preview the website i) Log out 4

After each task, the administrator asked follow-up questions to record the user s comments and suggestions. After the user completed the tasks, the administrator asked the user to rate the website on a 10-point scale for navigability and efficiency (1-poor to 10-excellent). The administrator also asked the users the following questions: 1) What the user liked most 2) What the user liked least 3) What was the easiest task 4) What was the most difficult task 5) How much time would be needed to feel comfortable with the website Users were thanked for volunteering. All users received a $10 gift card from Whole Foods or Amazon.com at the end of the sessions User Profiles Webstore is meant for business owners who want to create an online store.this can include any kind of business owner who wants to manage online sales. Most users are familiar with Amazon and very likely have an account. The test will see if users with Amazon experience can use Webstore. The test features two groups: 1) Users with some website building experience: This includes any kind of HTML, drag-drop, or template experience. These users are more likely advanced and may understand Webstore better than novice users. 2) Users without website building experience: Webstore does not require advance HTML knowledge and should be intuitive enough for beginners Users and Recruitment Users included Portland State University graduate students in the technical communication program, graduate assistants in the English Department, and a computer animation undergraduate from the Portland Art Institute. Users were recruited during class or via . The test included 4 women and 1 man. The age range was

4. Data Users completed an introductory survey prior to completing the tasks. All users were familiar with Amazon.com and had purchased products from Amazon in the past. Two of five users were familiar with Webstore and only one of the two had sold products using Amazon. Task Completion Success The test administrator recorded the users and their ability to complete the tasks. All users faced errors or made mistakes during tasks. All users were able to complete every task except for creating a category and assigning a product (Task C). Only one of five users could successfully complete Task C Time on Task Camtasia recorded the time for each user for each task. Some tasks took more time than others depending on the level of difficulty and the experience of the user.although all users completed at least 8 of the 9 tasks, the time varied for each user. Task A: Users added a product to their inventory Times ranged from 135 to 338 seconds for a mean of seconds. Task B: Users added an image to the product Times ranged from seconds for a mean of 176 seconds. User 5 took the most time, because she used Help and could not find her answer. 6

Task C: Users created a category and assigned their product Times ranged from seconds for a mean of seconds. All five users expressed frustration and confusion, and only User 1 completed the task. Task D: Users selected and applied a theme to the webpage Times ranged from seconds for a mean of 102 seconds. Users who spent more time on the task were browsing for different themes. Task E: Users changed the business name Times ranged from seconds for a mean of seconds. Two of five users expressed trouble finding the Edit button or searching for the account information. Task F: Users found shipping rates to Hawaii/Alaska Times ranged from seconds for a mean of 71.8 seconds. Task G: Users deleted the original product from the inventory Times ranged from seconds for a mean of 59.8 seconds. 9 Frustration per Task U1 U2 U3 U4 U5 Total Task A Task B Task C Task D Task E Task F Task G Task H Task I User Comments The following are verbal comments from each task. Comments are organized under positive or negative when applicable Comments about the Homepage Tabs at the top are new; it kind of says to me that it s more functional or accessible to me that s not so much connecting to me as searching but more of doing It looks pretty interesting and technical I m sort of one of those people that instead of reading through instructions or going through a wizard per se, would just fool around with things It s not being efficient with the space having all this stuff down here but then it s empty right here (the white space) and you just have this big tool bar I kind of like the idea of a preview. Just because I can actually look at something and get going right away but it also seems overwhelming because there s so much I could be doing 5.2. Comments about the Tasks Task A: Add a product to an inventory Positive: I like how it has autocorrect feature which is nice; it s more efficient Negative: I m not sure what I m supposed to do Maybe having an info button about it never hurts it doesn t really give much information pertaining to that 9

Task B: Upload an image to the product Positive: Now I made two changes that were successful Negative: It s pretty easy to make out the images but I feel like they could be colored coded; they could be like blue red green for the buttons to give it some visual distinction it does add to the minimalism having it like that but it was only easy to spot because it was right next to the tab. If it was floating somewhere else, it would be hard to find I m thinking if I were home alone now, this is where I d probably be stuck if something were not written down Task C: Create a category and assign the product Positive: N/A Negative: I think it should let me select it and say choose that product to assign to that thing I was doing. But I don t know it lets me make my selection but I can t do anything with my selection It looks like the button is at the bottom of the window but I can t scroll down for some reason I m uncertain if I did the right thing if I put the category in the right place I m thinking that this website isn t showing up correctly, but then there doesn t seem to be an okay button. I think it s hiding. It s kind of frustrating I feel like there s some kind of submit button? Task D: Select and apply a theme Positive: It s set out well with the icon and the paintbrush I was able to change the theme Negative: As usual from most website themes, I think they all look kind of ugly from afar but I bet they will look nice I m just going to save it. I m going to make this go away cause I applied it I think but I guess I didn t...i guess I did but this isn t going away and that confuses me I see my category is here, Shirts for Sale, it looks like that step worked out, but doesn t that mean if assigning the product to the category worked out too? 10

Task E: Change business name Positive: I felt that step was pretty easy because that s more similar to task that I normally do Negative: I can t actually click into edit; I have to go to the edit button on the right That didn t stand out; if the edit button was colored because it s all the way out in your peripheral you don t really notice it Task F: Find shipping rates Positive: I see shipping settings but I doubt there s actually I ll click on it to see oh, there is Negative: I feel like it would be in the Amazon Selling Coach; I m not really sure. Somewhere in tools the tool menu. I m going to try shipping settings Task G: Delete a product Positive: It was nice having the Are you Sure box? in case you hit the wrong button. It s very obvious when it s yellow and has the warning symbol there that it s not an undoable thing I m thinking I did that correctly Negative: N/A Task H: Preview the website Positive: I can tell it s mine because some of the changes I made Negative: But it says Store Sample and it doesn t say Fabulista T-Shirts that s interesting since I changed the name. It also makes it clear that changes that minutes to process so maybe that s the reason Task I: Log out Positive: It s in the upper right hand corner which is very intuitive Negative: N/A 11

5.3. Comments Post-Session Liked the Most: It made me feel like I could sell anything on the internet with Amazon for a 30 day free trial It seems like the way it s categorized and stuff is mostly kind of similar and they seem pretty intuitive The design is non-intrusive, so it feels, you know it feels simplistic and the minimalism it has kind of a neutral personality Once I got a little comfortable with the layout and knew where the things I was looking for were located, it would be an easy website to use Disliked the Most: I think the amount of information sometimes was too much. It took me a while scanning around to find the buttons that I wanted to use. There was maybe a little too much text sometimes and there were a lot of functions which is great but it does make it difficult to navigate for a new user I feel like this should be bigger (icons) and it feels strange to me because it goes in a chain like this and you have to come back to this one page to do the next thing. I think it would be better if it was more, if it prompted you to do the next step instead of having to go back and do the next step and figure it out I did find myself a little confused as where to go like with the account settings and some of the navigation finding where goes what exactly and how you find things and what kind of place isn t entirely clear Part of my dislike is my unfamiliarity with the tasks I suppose to do because I don t anything about products and categories. I felt like to have products and inventories if they were together Most Difficult Task: I marked the SKU but then I didn t know what to do with it The first task took me the most time not because it was the most difficult because I apparently clicked something I wasn t suppose to and then couldn t deselect it Probably finding the account settings. Having to go to one page and then thinking I wasn t at the right page and having to go to another page and then coming back and finally figuring out that was where I was suppose to go Assigning the product to the category because I couldn t figure out how to do it 12

Easiest Task: The first one was the easiest because in one click, it allowed me to add a new product and brought up a menu from the first and most prominent buttons Preview was easy but I felt that I played around enough that I could find that button Uploading the image probably, seemed very easy Adding the photo was probably the easiest. The button was right next to the start page where you created the product Anytime there was editing of information, or for example, to look for shipping rates, is a task I ve done Navigation Comments: I feel like when you re looking for help, you really want to find what you need help with and I saw columns to the right and columns on the bottom and in the middle a whole main page information Having that strong distinctions and you know icons are memorable. I feel like that could be integrated more even just color coding things a certain way blue if you do this, red if you do that Efficiency Comments: There were times I feel like it could compile some of the steps into one you know if you want to add an item, it s obvious you want to add a picture so there could be a box for adding a picture on the same page There were some things that I couldn t do and I had to look for things but I didn t hate it A more efficient site would sort of like just like guide you through a wizard steps for setting up a site and creating those basic things as opposed to giving you all the settings at once and letting you have that range of customization from the beginning Time Comments: I think if I sat down at home and didn t feel the pressure of time, I could spend a couple of hours getting comfortable and setting things up even beyond these tasks How long we ve been so far, I probably would have no problem doing this again with a different product now that I know where it is I would figure out what functions I need to access the most and probably just use those functions and ignore the rest of the website. I would find my niche in the site 13

User Navigation User navigation was documented by recording if users used the following buttons: Home, Return to Getting Started, Navigation, and Back. All users used the Return to Getting Started to see the list of available tasks and tools. Users used Home intuitively but one user would have preferred a larger font size. All users used the Dropdown Navigation button once they were comfortable and familiar with its design. Participants Used Back Button Used Dropdown Navigation Button Used Home Used Return to Getting Started P1 Yes Yes Yes Yes P2 No Yes No Yes P3 No Yes No Yes P4 No Yes Yes Yes P5 Yes Yes Yes Yes 6. Analysis For basic tasks such as finding information and changing account setting, all users completed the tasks without errors. However, when faced with unfamiliar tasks such as adding products and categories, users encountered more errors. As users felt more comfortable with the website, they completed tasks and found information more easily. Webstore is fairly intuitive and all users said they would feel comfortable repeating the steps, as well as exploring on their own. The following analysis is based on Jakob Nielsen s Heuristics for usability. Visibility of system status All users could easily see progress bars when uploading an image or applying changes. Two of five users said they liked seeing the progress bars directly in front of the screen. 14

One of five users said she could see the changes when attempting Task C but was confused when two changes were being saved when she only made one change. One of five users was confused when applying the theme to her page; she expected the pop-up window to disappear and was unsure if the changes were applied. Although the changes were applied, she continued to doubt herself and previewed the site to double check her change. Match between system and the real world Most users found the language and writing to be easy to understand. However, all users expressed some confusion when adding a product, because they were unsure of the specific terminology and options. The terms such as Merchant SKU were unfamiliar to users. Although there are info boxes next to the terms, the contrast is not very strong and users did not notice the question mark icons. User control and freedom One of five users said she liked having all the tools available to create her online store because she would prefer to explore the site on her own. However, three of five users said the choices seemed overwhelming and would prefer if the tools were connected into a wizard or if they were prompted to complete the next tasks rather than return to Home. One of five users said she would find what tools worked for her and ignore the rest. Webstore has a good mix of both guiding users but also allowing them to explore on their own. Consistency and standards All users said that Webstore looked similar to other Amazon services. Two of five users liked the similar colors and feel to the website. The Amazon logo was easy to read and accessible. One of five users said he liked the neutral feel to Amazon, meaning he would feel creative when creating his own store. Error prevention One of five users liked how the site autocorrected his mistake when assigning a price to his product. He also liked the red warning symbols next to required fields that appeared when information was not completed correctly. Recognition rather than recall Users for the most part had little trouble recollecting previous steps and completing other features such as the Theme selection and Preview buttons. All users knew that in the manage inventory tab, they could delete their products. Users recognized the Return to Getting Started button, as well the Home or Navigation tabs. Most users used these buttons to return to the homepage to complete the next task; the Return to Getting 15

Started is placed in plain sight and the large font size and color contrast helped direct users to Seller Central. One of five users said he would have liked to see colored tabs or color coded buttons to help distinguish the different features such as Adding an Image or Edit buttons. Two of five users said they liked the icons on Home but wanted them to be larger and used throughout the site rather than just Home; they mentioned that icons were more memorable than headings. Because Webstore uses lots of text, users had some trouble distinguishing buttons and remembering different actions. Aesthetic and minimalist design All users liked the icons on Seller Central. One of five users mentioned the page applied minimalism and liked the neutral feel to Webstore but wanted a better use of the white space such as using larger icons. One of five users said it looked very plain and technical. One of five users mentioned that she felt most of the website was very text heavy and required a lot of reading. Two of five users did not like the themes available and would like to see more customizing. Three of five users selected the Madeira Red theme; these three users were all women. Help users recognize, diagnose, and recover from errors Four of five users encountered error messages in Task A because they submitted their product without completing the required fields. Three users were able to complete the task on the second try. One user could not complete the Task A after accidently choosing an optional field and then was unable to undo the action; she was frustrated that she could not remove the optional button and the administrator had to refresh the page so she could proceed. One of five users encountered two error messages in Task B. The user mistook the inventory file upload as an image upload, but she was able to complete the task after returning to Seller Central. All users encountered errors in Task C. Only one of five users successfully created a category and assigned the product. Three of five users could create a category but could not assign the product, because they were confused with the pop-up window that did not render properly on the browser. The users clicked the window and tried to drag and scroll down to the submit button, but they were unsuccessful. One of five users could not create a category nor assign a product. Help and documentation Three of five users did not use Help and were able to complete most of the tasks easily. Two of five users used Help and one of five felt overwhelmed with information when she searched how to complete Task B; she read several links before leaving Help. Help 16

documentation feels text heavy and often information is difficult to find because of inconsistent bolding and unclear headings. Spacing between lines feels cramped and users had a difficult time navigating help. 7. Recommendations Based on the data and analysis, the report recommends the following changes. Recommendations are rated on a severity scale of High, Medium, and Low. High severity problems are global or major issues that interfere with users and may disrupt their tasks. Medium problems may cause some issues and frustrate users, but are not critical to fix. Low problems are minor problems such as spelling, grammar, tone, and consistency. Change Justification Severity Fix pop-up window that assigns a product to a category Users could not find the submit button and were unable to scroll down the page. Only one user was able to expand the window and correct the mistake. This problem occurs in Internet Explorer but not Firefox. High/Medium Reduce text in help documentation Users had trouble finding information when using Help because the page contained so much text. Steps and text lines need more space between them or separated into clearer groups. Medium Use consistent bolding and info boxes Information should be grouped and ordered using consistent style sheets and style guides. This helps users recollect information and visual guides rather than having to scan for information. Medium Move Edit buttons closer to the information fields or allow users to type in the field directly Most users expressed difficulty finding the edit buttons when accessing account information and expected to be able to directly change information and saving it; they often glanced over the edit button and went to another page. Medium/Low Prompt users to complete the next task after completing one Users liked having steps joined together such as adding images when uploading a product or customizing their. Medium/Low 17

Make info boxes larger or more contrasting Most users did not understand the product terminology in the Add Inventory fields. When users made a mistake, they were unsure of what information was needed to add and could not see the question mark icons. Low Automatically update Webstore display name to the Preview Automatically adding the business name on the website would give users a better idea before publishing their site. This would also save them the step of typing in the name manually. Low 8. Conclusion The test could use more ratings and evaluations after each tasks rather than postsession. Ratings and evaluations could include questions on a scale of 1-5. The test could also have allowed users more time to struggle with their tasks rather than moving to the next task. Because most users completed the tasks, future tests should include more difficult or challenging tasks. The tasks performed in this test were mostly basic and did not provide a deep analysis of Webstore. Future tests could have users add real products, customize their sites, and actually publish a live site. More complex tasks would require a longer test, more tasks, and better equipment to record and analyze data. Future tests could focus on a several key features rather than a general overview of the site. The test showed that young users who are internet savvy were able to complete most of the tasks and felt comfortable with most of the features on Webstore. However, older users may have trouble with Webstore because of the technical language and often confusing interface. Even the test users who had website building experience encountered problems during the sessions. All the users could complete most of the tasks and felt comfortable enough with Webstore after each session. The tasks and language were simple enough for users. Users could easily complete tasks that they were familiar with and liked the idea of creating an online store without needing HTML or website building experience. Implementing the recommendations could improve Webstore s performance and the user experience. 18
