ESO s Advanced Data Products (ADP) group is part of the VO Systems department. This group is responsible, among other tasks, for the main user entry point into the ESO Archive. We describe first the main ESO Archive interface that was deployed when ESO s raw data archive opened to the world community. Secondly, we describe a prototype interface to the ADP Archive. Finally, some statistics on Archive requests are provided. 1. Raw Data Archive Interface The ESO Science Archive Facility contains the description of all observations performed with: Instruments on the VLT telescopes since April 1, 1999 EFOSC2, CES, HARPS on the ESO 3.6m telescope since August 1999 WFI, FEROS on the MPG-ESO 2.2m telescope since January 1999 SOFI, SUSI2, EMMI on the NTT telescope since April 1, 1997 Images and spectra are stored in the Archive in an unreduced (raw) state together with the calibration and auxiliary data. Except for a few special cases, all science observations have a proprietary period of one year. Following a decision of the ESO council, the ESO Archive is now open worldwide to the general astronomical community (April 4th 2005). Note also that following the agreement between ESO and the United Kingdom, the Science Archive Facility now contains the data from the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) taken with the Wide Field Infrared Camera (WFCAM). Those data are available to the astronomers from the ESO Member States. To aid first-time users of the Archive and astronomers with no previous experience with ESO instruments, a new Archive interface has been set up (see Figure 1). It allows users to select observations from both ESO Chilean observatory sites (La Silla and Paranal), based on general criteria, which include: coordinates, target name/input list of target names, scheduling and proposal 690

2 ESO Science Archive Interfaces 691 information, instrument, category: science/calibration frames etc. The ESO Archive help page provides guidance on how to use and what to enter for the various query parameters offered in the form. From the query result pages, links are provided to FITS header display, seeing conditions, underlying observing program information, instrument specific data, cumulative exposure time, calibration selector. If the sky map option on the interface is switched on, the java applet will provide you with the pointing distribution of all the sources matching your request and having Ra,Dec information. A link to the applet is available at the bottom of the query result page. The interchange of data between ESO and Aladin is done via a VOTable (Dolensky et al. 2005). Conversely, each matching source displayed in Aladin is colour-coded by instrument name and is linked back to the ESO Archive by clicking: on the appropriate Dataset ID in the Aladin measurement window (you will get full ESO Archive information for this record) on the Program ID in the Aladin measurement window (you will get full observing program and scheduling information) 2. Advanced Data Products Interface The main mission of the VOS department at ESO is to turn the Science Archive Facility into a powerful scientific resource and coordinate ESO s involvement in Virtual Observatory activities. In particular, VOS is in charge of creating (Rité et al. 2005), ingesting (Leoni et al., Slijkhuis et al. 2005) and publishing ADPs within the VO infrastructure. ADPs are science grade data products (Retzlaff et al. 2005) either based on ESO Archive data and produced by the ADP group, or delivered by the astronomical community at large. E.g. as of Period 75, Principal Investigators of ESO Large Programs are required to return their data products to the ESO Archive at the time of publication of their scientific results. A prototype interface has been set up, that gives an early glimpse of the future ADP portal to be based on the ESO metadata repository (Leoni et al. 2005). It allows to search/retrieve the contents of the ADP packages by project name, project type, program ID, instrument, optical element etc. Log files and ReadMe files are made available online, as links associated to a particular resource. In addition, all FITS header keyword names, values, comments, indexes and types from the ADPs are stored in a warehouse-like system. This allows on-the-fly reconstruction and display of headers instead of having to go back to the FITS files. We are currently building up a complete and searchable repository of all FITS header keywords of ESO data. Primary and extension headers are concerned. As a test case, all Paranal headers since April 2004 have been retrieved, parsed and loaded into Sybase IQ. It represents 300 million keywords from 1.36 million headers. The whole ingestion process reaches a speed of 10,000 keywords per second. The main advantages of such a system are its fast processing capabilities and the user ability to search by whatever keyword names/values from the FITS headers.

Archive Requests: Statistics Prior to the worldwide Archive opening, ESO data were made available only to scientists with affiliation within an ESO Member State. Scientists with a Chilean institute affiliation enjoyed the same rights regarding Archival dataset requests. The ESO Member States include: Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland and United Kingdom. 91% of the requests in 2005 are from the ESO Member States (see Figure 2). However USA and Spain follow closely. 1.5% of all requested files in 2005 are reduced science data from Science Verification or Public Surveys such as EIS and GOODS. We recorded an increase in the number of Archive requests, though it is still hard to say whether it is due to the normal yearly increase or to the impact of the Archive opening.
