1 Configure your office PC 1 Allow remote connections to your office PC By default, your office PC doesn t accept remotee connections. Only members of the Technology Department can change this setting, so be sure to notify us when you re ready to complete this step. How to verify that it s set up correctly 1. On your desktop, right click My Computer and selectt Properties. 2. On the Remote tab, make sure Allow users to connect remotely to this computer is checked. Figure 1.1. 2 3. Click the Select Remote Users button and ensure your computing ID appears in the list of permitted users. Figure 1.2. Adding permitted users. 2 Write down your office PC s IP address The IP address is your office PC s unique location on the Internet. You ll need to have this address handy when you set up your remote connection from home. To determine your office PC s address, simply visit: The resulting IP address should be something lik ke

3 Configure your home PC 3 Check your home PC s security Your home PC must meet approximately the same security standards as your work PC. There are two things you need to check. Are you receiving automatic updates to your Windows operating system? 1. Click the Start button and select Settings Control Panel. 2. 4 Do you have anti virus software installed? If the answer is no, then you ll need to either download andd install an anti virus package from the Internet or take your home PC to Best Buy to have their staff f perform the installation. 4 Obtain a Personal Digital Certificate on your home PC A Personal Digital Certificate is a small file provided to you byy the University that positively identifies you on the Internet. They are easy to obtain by using Internet Explorer (turn off Pop Up Blocker first) to visit: / Note: Please be sure to use Internet Explorer for this step, not Mozilla Firefox or another browser. 1. How to verify that it s set up correctly 1. Click the Start button and select Settings Control Panel. 2. Double click Internet Options. 3. On the Conten tab, click the Certificates button. 4. Ensure your new Personal Digital Certificate appears in the list. 6

7 Figure 4.4. Verifying the certificate is installed. 5 Install VPN client on your home PC The Virtual Private Network (VPN) client allows you to make a secure remote connection. Download the appropriate version of Cisco VPN and follow directions below: This is a very easy program to install accept the licensing agreement and all default settings to install. You ll need to restart your PC to finalize the installation. How to verify that it s set up correctly In the next step, you ll make a connection using the VPN client. 7

8 6 Initiate VPN Connection Initiating your VPN connection will allow your home PC through the Alumni Association s server firewalls. 1. Click Start Programs Cisco Systems VPN Client (ITC) VPN Client. 2. Highlight UVa More_Secure_Network and click the Connect button. Figure 6.1. 9 How to verify that it connected correctly If your connection is successful, you ll see a small yellow pad lock icon in your task tray. Figure 6.2. Verifying your VPN connection. 7 Open Remote Desktop Remote Desktop replicates your office PC s screen on your home PC. Please be aware that your office PC must be turned on for remote access to work. 1. Click Start Programs Accessories Communicati ons Remote Desktop Connection. 2. 10 4. When the login screen for your office PC appears, log in as you normally would. 5. When you re finished, click Start Disconnect. 10
