Hey guys, It has been a while since I posted any kind of tutorial, but now that there is a new office version out, I will post a tutorial about how to install it and how it integrates into the cloud

1 Hey guys, It has been a while since I posted any kind of tutorial, but now that there is a new office version out, I will post a tutorial about how to install it and how it integrates into the cloud to make your documents available anywhere. First I need to mention that there has been some talk about whether it is called Office 2013 or Office 15. The answer to this is both. Office 2013 is the name of the actual suite and Office 15 is the version number. This is like Windows Vista and Windows 6.0. They are the same thing, but Windows 6.0 is the version number (6.1 is Windows 7 and 6.2 is Windows 8). Now, I should also mention at this time that Office 2013 is only compatible with Windows 7 and 8. Sorry to those on Windows XP and Vista, at this time, you will not be able to run the newest version of office. The last part that I need to mention before we begin is that office 2013 now appears to be integrated with Office 365, which was used mainly in businesses. As far as I know, Microsoft has not released any prices for the office suite yet, but from what I can tell, the Home Premium version of it will allow you to install the suite on 5 PCs or tablets (yes, they are on the same license for now anyway) With that, let s begin. HOW TO INSTALL OFFICE 2013 ON THE WINDOWS RELEASE PREVIEW Step 1: Create an account and join the preview In order to sign up for the preview, you must have a Windows Live account. If you don t have one, you can get one by going to Once you have one, just go to the Office Preview website at You will see something that looks like this. Click the sign up button to begin the sign in process. 1

2 The first thing you will see is this screen, just click try now. Now you can sign in with your windows live ID and then it will once again redirect you to a new page. Step 2: Download and Install Office Now that you are at the main page, it should look something like this. 2

Rest assured that the 32 bit version will work on a 64 bit version of Windows, but if you want to change it, click the Language and install options button.

3 You can now hit the install button. This is the time that I will mention that you are by default downloading the 32 bit version. Microsoft recommends this because when third party apps are installed in Office, they might not be compatible with the 64 bit version. Rest assured that the 32 bit version will work on a 64 bit version of Windows, but if you want to change it, click the Language and install options button. If you don t care, just continue on with the Install button. If you do want to use the 64 bit or Spanish version, look at the note on the end of this document. You will be asked to download the web installer. Go ahead and download it or run it. Once you run it, a User Account Control box might appear (depending on your settings). Go ahead and allow it to run. Also allow any Anti-virus prompts that might pop-up. You will soon see this screen. 3

This process goes through a few different steps and might take a while to complete. Once it is done, you will see this screen. Once the button is available, go ahead and click the Next button.

The installer program will then try to connect to the account that downloaded the program. This part took a while for me, so don t be surprised if it does for you as well. You might need to click the next button on the above picture again. As always, Microsoft wants you to help then make the experience better. This is up to you. I normally don t, but if you want to, go ahead. After you make your decision, read the agreement and click accept if you agree. 4

Now you will see video about the new office. Notice how they also call it office 15. In the background, the installer is downloading the programs from a Microsoft server and installing them for you.

You might notice some lag and some times where the video needs to buffer depending on your internet speeds. Once this is done, Microsoft asks you to sign in to a Windows Live account so you can use SkyDrive to store documents. I clicked not now and will show you how to later in the tutorial, but if you want to now, go ahead and do it. 5

6 Again, it will show you some benefits of signing in with SkyDrive. Click next when you are ready. It will then finish up the install process. You can take a look around the new office if you want to. I didn t so if you don t, click no thanks. 6

7 Soon, you will see this screen. As it says, they are doing finishing tasks, but you can use office. Don t go offline ore restart your computer while this is going on. This process took a long time on my computer and while it was running, it was nearly impossible to use any of the office applications. They kept freezing on me and not responding. Therefore, I am suggesting that you just wait for this process to finish before using any of the applications. 7

8 When it is done, you will get this notification in the system tray. Step Three: Post-Installation Now that office is installed, you can see it on your start menu. I installed it on windows 8, I haven t tried it on Windows 7 yet. If you were to scroll over, you would see Word. That is the first application that I opened. 8

9 You will see the new word splash screen. And then you will see the main interface. It looks pretty similar to that of Office 2010 with a few exceptions. You can see the sign in button on the far right side of the window. Also you can see the new logo and new color scheme of the bottom bar. 9

10 To access your SkyDrive account now, go ahead and click file. The following screen will appear. Click the SkyDrive button. Now you can click the sign in button on the new screen that appears. 10

11 Once you click the button, you will be taken to a sign in prompt for Windows Live. Sign in with the login that you want to use SkyDrive with. Now you will see the next screen with SkyDrive enabled. It will allow you to save and open files from the cloud onto the desktop app. I have also looked at the other office applications and they seem to be close to the same as well. There might be more designs and templates to use from what it looks like. 11

12 If you go back to the Office 365 screen, you will now see that one of your installs has been used. From this screen, you can now deactivate the client and make that license available to use again. You can also see the computer name, operating system, and the date office was installed on the machine. One new feature that I found is an App store for the office products themselves. You can see it in the screenshot below. 12

You can get there in two different meathods. The first way is to go to the Insert tab of the ribbon and click the apps for office button. This will get you to the first screen.

If you want to use the web browser instead, do the same thing, only select Find more apps at the Office store and it will show the main screen you see above. So now you have the breif rundown of new features and how to install office From what I can tell, the documents are compatible with the Offie 2010 and 2007 office suites and 2003 with the compatibility pack.
