Installing InveStore Important Note: You must have administrator privileges to install InveStore under Windows. Check with your MIS Administrator to confirm the correct user name and password to logon to this server. This MUST be the same user name and password used to run InveStore v4 as an application, and to install it as a service later. The installation program performs the following basic functions: Updates the Windows registry to include the appropriate directory paths and specify the necessary device drivers. Creates the PDT directories on the magnetic hard drive you specify and copies the program files to this directory. PDT is the default root directory created by the installation program. Installs Microsoft Management Console (MMC) if needed. Insert the InveStore CD into your Server s CD-ROM drive. The CD should auto play or you may click the Start menu in the lower left corner of the Windows desktop and use Run to launch Setup.exe. Read the information displayed in the Welcome and Software License Agreement screens, and click Next. You will then follow the instructions displayed for User Information and Destination Location, entering the appropriate information when prompted. Next, you will select the Setup type you desire to install: There are two Setup types you will select from in this screen. Server/Client: Installs all InveStore program files for local and remote storage library control, the InveStore MMC snap-in modules for the console, and the on-line manuals to your system. Client: Installs the InveStore MMC snap-in modules for remote only console control of InveStore storage servers, and the on-line manuals to your system. Select the Setup Type you desire, and then Next. Page 7

During the installation, you will be prompted to input your InveStore software license serial number which is located on the back of the CD cover. You must input a valid license serial number. InveStore will ask you if you want it to claim the CD-ROM devices, connected to your server. If you select yes, InveStore will claim and control all CD-ROM devices. Choosing NO will prevent InveStore from claiming and taking control of your CD-ROM devices. Note: If installing a WIN-CD-xxx software model, this prompt will not appear. If you are using InveStore to control a CD-ROM library or tower you will need to choose YES, or no InveStore CD-ROM drivers will be installed. You will be asked if you would like to install the Adobe Acrobat Reader if it is not already present on your computer. This program is required to view the InveStore manuals, which are in PDF format. Note: It is necessary to restart your server at this point to complete the installation process. InveStore System Startup For your initial start of the InveStore storage software and for subsequent restarts when not running as a service, first choose the InveStore Startup icon from the Pegasus InveStore folder off the list of Programs on the Start menu. This will start the Storage sub-system and MMC program for the InveStore console screen. To view the InveStore servers that are detected both locally or on your Network, click on the + symbol and select the InveStore Enterprise view: Page 8

Attaching a Drive Letter To prepare the InveStore resource for use, you must first attach a local drive letter to the storage file system so that it may be accessed transparently. Attaching a drive is a one-time procedure. This drive is automatically re-mapped upon an InveStore system startup. To assign a drive letter from the Server view tool bar, select the Attach Drive icon from the Server view console tool bar setting Choose a Drive letter from the Available window on the right of this screen and then select Attach. Click OK. (Do not attach more than one drive letter using this procedure.) Running InveStore as a Windows Service InveStore supports full setup and configuration as a Windows Service. This allows InveStore to startup automatically when the server system is rebooted. Important Note: It is critical that before you proceed with the installation of InveStore as a Windows service, that you have completed the following steps. Reboot your Windows storage server after installation of code. Verify the successful startup of the InveStore system as an application. Format and mount volume sets into the storage library or drive. Assign a logical drive letter and establish your shares. Successfully copy files to and from the storage device. Setup up your Windows shares Once you have completed the above you steps, you will then precede with the InveStore Service installation. Page 9

The use of Windows NT and Windows 2000 require slightly different procedures due to the differences in the operating systems. Windows NT System Service Setup To run the InveStore Service installation select the Start Menu from the Windows desktop and locate the Pegasus InveStore folder. Select Service Install. A Warning screen will first appear reminding the administrator to make sure the sub-system is ready and tested. When ready, select the Continue button. This brings up step by step description window that will remain on top view through the Service setup sequence: When ready to proceed select the Configure Service button. This automatically brings up the Windows Services screen. Scroll down and highlight Pegasus File System Service and select the Startup button on the right. The Service parameter screen for the Pegasus File System Service will be displayed. Page 10

The Startup Type should be Automatic. The Log On should be This Account, Using the Administrator account or a user name and password with local system Administrative rights. Important Note: Check with your MIS Administrator to confirm the correct name and password for this server. This MUST be the same user name and password used to install the InveStore software and used to start it as an application. Select OK. Once completed, select Close. The service will now be started automatically. Windows 2000 Service Setup Important Note: Check with your MIS Administrator to confirm the correct name and password for this server. This MUST be the same user name and password used to install the InveStore software and used to start it as an application. Run the Service Install, select the Start Menu from the Windows desktop and locate the Pegasus InveStore folder. Select Service Install. After reading the information, select Continue. A simple login screen will be displayed. You will enter the correct Administrator name for your server, and the Administrator s password. Page 11 Once you have entered the Server s Administrator s name and password (or equivalent with Administrative rights), select Ok.

To Start the InveStore Service, you will then go to the Windows Start menu, Programs, and Administrative Tools to select Services. This displays the Services screen: Scroll down through the services showing, until you find the Pegasus File System Service entry. Right click on the Pegasus File System service to open the Properties screen. Select Start to startup the InveStore Service: Once InveStore is installed and configured as a service, the InveStore MMC console screen no longer controls the starting or stopping of the storage subsystem. The subsystem is now controlled through the service selection for InveStore in the Control Panel- Services icon. To properly stop InveStore, you will need to open the Control Panel-Services icon and select STOP for the InveStore service. Page 12

Navigating The Management Console This section provides a quick overview of the features and functions of the InveStore Storage Management Enterprise Software. A few minutes spent displaying the various views and their related folders and Icons will quickly allow the administrator to become familiar with the layout and functional characteristics of the InveStore v4 interface. InveStore Enterprise At the top level of the management console is a folder icon labeled InveStore Enterprise within which are found all of the folders and icons that provide access to storage management functions available to the system administrator. Right mouse click on the folder to reveal the first set of options for managing InveStore servers on the network -- your Enterprise. Page 13

InveStore Server Click the InveStore Enterprise folder to reveal the next node in the tree, the InveStore Server. This icon represents the local Windows server using the name assigned by your LAN administrator. Right mouse click on the icon, (STORAGESRVR1 in this case) to reveal several options. Administrative Tools From the Storage Server level, you may access various configuration and setup tools that will help you to receive the most from your system. The majority of the tuning parameters are accessed via the icons found in the Administrative Tools area. Click on the icon to reveal each feature. Page 14

Backup Note: You must have two storage drives available in order to properly use this function. The backup operation assumes that you are using two libraries, a library that has more than one drive, a library that has access to other storage servers, or a library with a standalone drive. To start the backup process, Choose Backup from the Administrative Tools view: The Scheduled Backups screen shows backup relationships if there are any and when they are scheduled to execute. The Source is the volume set that you desire to backup. The Target is the destination volume set and must have the capacity of the Source volume set. The deletion or modification of an existing backup pair is executed from the primary backup screen by selecting the pair in the Scheduled Backups screen and making the desired selection. Note: If the Source Volume Set was created using the Lazy Write algorithm, then you MUST make sure that the current algorithm set for when the backup is executed is also set to Lazy Write. (Please see the Default Cache Algorithm in the User Guide for more information on how this parameter is set.) Page 15

Backup Scheduler To add a new backup pair, click the New button from the Scheduled Backups screen. This will open the Backup Scheduler: Select a unique volume set for both the Source and Target from the appropriate pull down menus. Make sure the Target volume set has the same capacity available, of the Source, and that both volumes sets are currently mounted in the library. Note: A specific backup volume set cannot be defined as the backup Target for multiple Source volume sets in the backup program. Set the Time of Day that you want the Backup to automatically start. Note: We recommend that you set the Time of Day to non-production business hours. Running a backup operation during normal production business hours will cause delays in your other storage operations, and may adversely affect the successful completion of the backup operation. Next select the duration (e.g. Once): the Days of the Week or Days of the Month for the backup to execute. Select Ok to finish. The newly created pair and schedule will now show in the Scheduled Backups screen. Once the initial backup of a pair has completed successfully, subsequent backups on the same pair will cause an incremental operation to occur. This means that only new or change data on the Source will be written to the Target. Page 16

Performance Management The InveStore Storage Management Software provides performance parameters that are highly tunable to specific application requirements and considerations. Memory usage, caching, and other options can be easily configured for your application. You may control drive allocation, the minimum time and maximum time a volume can remain in a drive and the priority of read over write requests, for example. There are a number of considerations that affect the performance of the storage system. The exact method needed to achieve maximum performance depends a great deal on your equipment capabilities as well as how the system is accessed by your application. Note: Please refer to the InveStore v4 User Guide for further details on these parameters. Cache Management Click on the Cache Management icon to display a configuration screen which features tuning parameters specific to the RAM caching. Note: Please refer to the InveStore v4 User Guide for further details on these parameters. Page 17

Server Management Click on the Server Management icon to display a configuration screen that features parameters for tuning the file system as well as determining the behavior of the software under certain conditions. Note: Please refer to the InveStore v4 User Guide for further details on these parameters. Administrator Message Window Click on the Administrator Messages icon to view a Log file that displays local system activity for the current day. Within this window you can view details regarding system startup, media handling, hardware errors, and other information about the operation of the system. A new Log file is created every 24 hours. Page 18

Volume Sets Volume Sets (the spanning of multiple media surfaces into one functional volume) is one of the significant features of the InveStore v4 Storage Management Software. This allows the user to go beyond the limitations of individual media cartridges, thereby increasing the capacity and versatility of how applications use the storage server. The creation of a Volume Set uses a process of combining individual media surfaces within a library device and making them appear to be a single contiguous volume. The first surface of the first media is typically referred to as the root volume, and all other surfaces are referred to as member volumes. The InveStore Storage Management Software provides the ability to manage single or multi-surface volumes referred to as Volume Sets. The next level of the management console is a folder icon labeled Volume Sets (root). This object is visible whenever there is a storage device attached and operating on the system. Page 19

The Most Common Functions The following section describes the most common functions used by operators, within the InveStore v4 console. These are: Mounting or Pre-mounting a Volume Set Formatting a Volume Set. Unmounting a Volume Set Volume Set Naming Conventions Extend a Volume Set Reinitialize Volume Set Erase Volume Set Page 20

Mounting or Pre-mounting a Volume Set NOTE: You will NOT use the front panel buttons on the library for this procedure. To mount a volume set, or pre-mount media for formatting (import a media into the storage library), from the Libraries view select Mount Volume Set icon: The Mount Volume Set screen is displayed. You will now select the Library that you want to mount the Volume Set into: Page 21

Leave the wildcard Volume Set name *. InveStore will automatically READ the volumes inserted. The mail-slot of the library will automatically open. Place the media into the mail-slot of the library. InveStore will then issue a command for the controller arm in the jukebox to pick the media from the mail slot and place it into the drive for mounting. An indicator screen will provide a status of the Mount process: You will be prompted for additional members of a volume set as required until the complete volume set is mounted. Place these into the mail slot one at a time as prompted and then select the OK button. Once the process completes the mounting of all members of the volume set you will then see the volume(s) displayed under the Volume Sets view: Page 22

Formatting a Volume Set The InveStore media format is optimized for use with storage media (both WORM and Rewritable) and provides an operating system independent format that allows data transportability across operating system platforms. All media must be formatted with the InveStore file system before data can be written to the storage volumes. NOTE: The media must first be Pre-Mounted into the library device. (For further details please see Mounting or Pre-mounting a Volume Set.) The media typically used for formatting in a volume set are the uninitialized volumes with the naming convention of!uninitializedvolumexxx : From the Libraries view, select the Format Volume Set icon. This will open the Format Volume Set wizard. Page 23

The Format Volume Set wizard is used to initialize all media for use within the InveStore system. This is Step 1 of the two-step process in creating volume sets: The Media Type is defined by whether you are using WORM or Rewritable media. You cannot interchange media types within the same volume set. Make sure that the type of media you select, is all ready mounted in the library. The Library Name is the name of the physical storage library that you are formatting the volume set in. Make sure to specify the correct library. Volume Name: Enter a unique volume name for the new Volume Set, excluding the following characters: # $ % ^ & * ( )? + ; :,-/ Select Next. Page 24

Format Parameters Step 2: There are several parameters by which you may format a given volume set: Write Order- The Write Order or MAP_SCHEME determines the order to which individual surface volume members are written. If CONTIGUOUS mapping is selected, the A and B side of a media cartridge is used before progressing to the next media surface. If STAGGERED mapping is used, the A-sides of all the media cartridges in a volume set are used, then the B-sides. Volume Set Type- EXTENSIBILITY affects whether and how new volumes may be added to the volume set you are creating. Fixed extensibility means the number of volumes in the set is permanently fixed at format time. Manual extensibility means that only the user can add volumes to the volume set. Automatic extensibility means that the system can automatically add erased or re-useable surfaces to the volume set as needed. If the volume set is automatically extensible, it is also manually extensible. Important Note: The Volume Set Type is permanently set at the time of creating the volume set, and cannot be changed at a later time. Format Type- At this time, this is limited to PEGASUS_ARCHIVE_FILESYSTEM. Directory and File Creation Watermark- To minimize disc thrashing, InveStore clusters related files and subdirectories on the same volume (as opposed to having the files scattered randomly over many volumes within a volume set). InveStore also avoids having files span volumes, since any access to such a file would very likely cause thrashing. Once you have set the parameters in Step 2 to the desired settings, select the Format button to start the process. A status message will advise you on the status of the format process. Once the format has completed, you will see the new volume set and it s members displayed under the Volume Set view. Page 25

Unmounting a Volume Set Note: You will NOT use the front panel buttons on the library for this procedure. To un-mount a volume (export or physically remove a media from the library or drive), use the Libraries view and select the Unmount Volume Set icon: From the Volume Set pull down, select the volume set you want to Unmount. Unmount Type: You may track the location of an offline volume set, recording an offline location if desired. To do this, select the Keep Cache option. If you do not want to track the offline location of a volume set, select the Delete Cache option. Offline Library: For ease in tracking offline volume sets, you may add information in this area describing the exact location that you are storing the offline volume. Note: If you have selected the Keep Cache option, once the volume set is un-mounted from the library, the volume will still be listed in the folder contents to the right of the Library view. Page 26

Volume Set Naming Conventions The InveStore file system will generate the following names under the conditions described:!unknownfileformatxxxx The name created for all volumes mounted that contain a format that is not recognized by the InveStore file system.!uninitializedvolumexxxx The name given to an uninitialized (unformatted) volume imported into the library.!unreadablevolumexxxx The name given to a volume when the media failed to successfully mount. This normally indicates a media level problem with the media itself.!failedformatxxxx The name given to a volume when the media failed to successfully complete a format operation. This may indicate a problem with the storage drive or the media itself.!reuseablevolumexxxx The name given to a volume that was recycled by the administrator for reformatting and reuse in the system.!freedvolumexxx The name given to a volume that was Erased by the adiministrator for reformatting and reuse in the system. Note: xxxx indicates a four-digit number starting with 0000, and is incremented by one for each volume surface of a particular type. Extending a Volume Set To extend the capacity of an existing volume set, select the Extend a Volume Set option. Note: The volume set MUST have been originally created with either the Automatic or Manual extensibility option in order to use this function. Page 27 Designate the Library Name in which the volume set resides, and input the number of surfaces you want the volume set extended by, in the Numbers of volumes to extend. Select Ok to complete this operation. Important Note: You must have unformatted media currently mounted within the library for this function to work correctly.

Reinitialize Volume Set The Reinitialize Volume Set option allows the operator to keep the original Volume Set name and setup parameters, while permanently erasing ALL directory structure and data from the Volume Set. This results in a volume set with the same format type, name, and number of members that were created originally. Recycle Volume Set The Recycle Volume Set option provides a quick alternative to recycle for reuse all the member surfaces of a volume set. The surfaces are not low level formatted in this procedure, but are marked for re-use by the system for other volume set operations. This saves time upfront on these procedures. This creates volume surface members with the name of!reusablevolumexxx. Erase Volume Set The Erase Volume Set executes a low level format on all the member surfaces of a volume set erasing ALL volume name, directory structure, and data permanently. This creates volume surface members with the name of!freedvolumexxx. Page 28

Improving Performance of the Storage Server System performance is a function of the available resources necessary to execute the system operations and program functions. Some install locations make the mistake of attempting to use an existing legacy server with marginal resources to access and control the new expensive storage library they purchased. Spending thousands of dollars on a storage library and then connecting it to a legacy server with marginal resources will not provide satisfactory performance results. As with any server, sufficient system resources should be available for the scale of the job at hand. Here are a few simple suggestions for building your system: Use a current generation server: As of January 2003, the minimum system processor should be at least a Pentium III class processor MHz or better. Lesser servers may be used, but will adversely affect system performance. RAM - RAM is one of the most important resources for a Windows NT/2000/XP system. You should install enough physical RAM to ensure the system rarely has to utilize the Pagefile. For any current generation server, 512 MB of RAM should be an operational minimum. Although it is true that the system will work with the minimums printed on the box, building a system that "performs" should be your focus. In 2003, most experienced Windows OS users acknowledge that 512 MB is a good minimum starting point. To help you determine the resources being used by your system, start the InveStore storage server system and any related applications. Then use the Windows Task Manager to determine how much RAM your system has allocated. Typically you should add RAM if the available physical RAM under load, is less than 100 MB's of free memory. Page 29
