Product Overview Performance Navigator (PerfNav) is a graphical PC Tool for IBM i Performance Management, Capacity Planning and Problem Solving, which runs on Windows 95/98/XP/Vista (See Vista note below)/nt/2000/windows Performance Navigator displays the data in either a graphical format or a report/tabular format. Hundreds of graphs and reports are available. The graphs provide a host of features giving extremely dynamic access to your data. The report format provides addi onal features. Performance Navigator also provides What If modeling/capacity planning capabili es, grouping and automated produc on. Performance Navigator displays IBM i reduced performance data and raw performance data. The data is accessed via an ODBC connec on. The ODBC connec ons are set up under the Edit/Connec ons menu. By default, PerfNav uses the Client Access ODBC driver to connect to the IBM i. However, other ODBC IBM i drivers can be used via the manual connec on sub tab under the ODBC tab. These will be discussed later. For now, just understand that Performance Navigator uses this ODBC connec on to retrieve the data. In addi on to crea ng an ODBC data source, the 400 components, PN/400, must be installed to manage the collec on of performance data. PN/400 is IBM i code that automates the collec on and management of performance data. Easy PN/400 installa on steps will be discussed in a later sec on. Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 7

Understanding the Performance Data ( Performance Data Big Picture ) IBM files consist of the QAPM files These files are for current day graphs A er PERFNAVDR runs at 12:30 am, the PerfNav historical files are created IBM Files PN/400 (PERNAVDR) MPG Files Known as the Raw data Normally In QMPGDATA or QPFRDATA Examples: QAPM Files QAPMSYS QAPMPOOL And so on A er PERFNAVDR runs Known as the Historical data Always In MPGLIB Examples: MPGINT MPGPOOL MPGLOB And so on Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 9

Understanding the Performance Data (cont.) Two Types of Data Are Used Raw Data The raw data is the normal performance data that is collected by the built in IBM i performance monitor. Performance Navigator supports both Collec on Services introduced in V4R4 and QPFRMON in prior releases. Although this raw data can be collected into any library, it is normally found in the monitor s default library, QPFRDATA, or QMPGDATA. Performance Navigator uses this data as input to its data reduc on process and in the Current Day graphs used for problem determina on. Reduced Data This is the data that is for PerfNav s historical graphs. The library MPGLIB on the IBM i contains reduced performance data. The data is a subset of the data collected by the IBM i Performance Monitor. It contains up to 3 years of summarized data and 365 days of interval data (15 minutes by default) in approximately MB per year. The summarized data maintains data for two workload shi s. First shi is by default 8:00am to 5:30pm with the second shi 5:31pm to 7:59am. These shi s are used to track day me vs. nigh me workload trends and are intended to match the predominantly interac ve first shi and the predominantly batch second shi. Although these values can be changed, it will affect the historical trending. This reduced data gives Performance Navigator quick and easy access to produce its graphs and reports. The Performance Monitor does not create reduced data. The Performance Tools do not use reduced data. The reduced data in Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 10

Reduced Data (cont.) MPGLIB is updated each night by a data reduc on job. This data is created if the Performance Monitor runs each day and if the data reduc on job runs each night. The collec on of reduced data is ini ated by installing PN/400. Note: If PM/400 has been or is running on your system, PN/400 will copy the PM/400 data into MPGLIB on the first execu on of the data reduc on program. The PM/400 library contains 90 days of historical performance data. Although not as detailed as PN/400, the data is very useful for trending. Collec ng the Performance Data One of the main advantages of PerfNav is the automa on of the collec on and management of IBM i performance data. Performance Navigator places a job on the job scheduler that uses an API to start the management central collec on service star ng in V4R4 or starts QPFRMON in prior releases. The performance monitor is run 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. Each night a data reduc on job runs that analyzes the data and purges older raw performance data. By default, PerfNav keeps 4 days of raw data for use in problem determina on. This automa c dele on process keeps the raw performance data library at a reasonable size. Raw performance data consumes about MB per day. If disk space is not an issue, users can keep as many days of raw data as needed. A set of summarized performance data is retained for long term trend analysis. This summarized data is the reduced data. PN/400 jobs, by default, are run using the OS/400 Job Scheduler. Any other job scheduler may be used. Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 11

Understanding the Two Types of Data NOTE: The above members are listed via the Performance Tools print menu (2) Reduced Data MPG Historical Data The library MPGLIB on the IBM i contains reduced performance data. The data is a subset of the data collected by the IBM i Performance Monitor. PerfNav creates two kinds of reduced data: 1. Detailed Data Allows 24 hour drill down graph capability 2. Highly Summarized Data Allows 7 years of data (month/week/date graph capability) The reduced data in MPGLIB is created each night by a data reduc on job (PERFNAVDR). The Performance Monitor does not create reduced data. The collec on of reduced data is ini ated by installing PN/400 (more on that later) This reduced data is used in Historical graphs processes It is not used in the current day graph process. Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 12

Installing PN/400 This sec on is the first step to installing the required IBM i (AS/400) code on your systems. The same process is used to update this code from me to me. At a minimum, a new release of OS/400 requires an update. The support for new releases is usually provided a month before general availability of the release. Upon installing PN for the first me on any PC, a message box will ask you if you would like to install PN/400. This needs to be done once or twice a year to support new features and releases. The window below appears when selec ng this op on. In the client, click File > Install PN/400 (on host). These 5 tabs are used for the easy install Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 13

Installing PN/400 (cont.) First, we must acquire the latest version of the PN/400 save file. If you have already acquired the latest version and need to install on other IBM i systems, just click the Automa c Search bu on. This func on searches the C: drive only. You must also be careful when installing updates so this op on doesn t find the old release. See below: Click on Tab 1 Click to acquire host code Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 14

Installing PN/400 (cont.) Click on Tab 2 Next, we create the save file on the host. By clicking on this tab, the CRTSAVF command is placed on the Windows PC clipboard. Just go to a 5250 command line and click Paste and press Enter. NOTE: It s possible that the save file may already exist. Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 15

Installing PN/400 (cont.) Click on Tab 3 Next, we will upload the acquired host code from tab 1 to the IBM i system. Enter the system name or IP address, user ID and password and click the FTP bu on. The IP address is the best op on. Note: The FTP server must be started on the IBM i. Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 16

Installing PN/400 (cont.) Click on Tab 4 Next, we restore the install library on the IBM i system. The library MPGLIBDST is the PN/400 distribu on library. During the next step, MPGLIB will be created or updated with objects from the distribu on library. Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 17

Installing PN/400 (cont.) Click on Tab 5 Finally, we run the install library on the IBM i system. Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 18

Understanding the PN/400 Screens (Menu op ons 4 7) First, we must access the menu op ons with the following menu command: The following menu will appear: Next, let s begin to look at each screen op on. Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 19

Op on 5 Job Scheduled Entries These 5 jobs create/manage the historical data files: PERFNAVDR Data Reduc on This job reads performance data (output from the performance monitor) and writes a summarized (reduced) set of data into files in MPGLIB. The files in MPGLIB are used by PerfNav to draw graphs. Note: This job also deletes the raw performance data that is collected via collec on services (See Purge Days on the next page) PERFNAVDS Disk Collec on This job does a DSPOBJD *ALLUSR/*ALL *ALL OUTPUT(*OUTFILE) OUTFILE(MPGLIB/MPGOBJD). This is scheduled to run once a week at 3:30 am on Sunday. The data in MPGOBJD is used by PERFNAVDR (the next me it runs) to collect informa on on library and object sizes. File to be created is MPGLIB/MPGLOB (Libraries & Objects). This file allows us to do amazing disk analysis! PERFNAVIFS IFS Informa on Collec on Process This job runs once a week (Sunday at 5:00) and collects IFS informa on used for repor ng (i.e. directory and stream file sizes). PERFNAVPG Purge Reduced Data This job runs once a month and trims back the amount of reduced performance data. Seven years of highly summarized data is kept. PERFNAVPM Check Performance Monitor This job makes sure the performance monitor (Collec on Services) is running. Since the performance monitor usually keeps itself running, PERFNAVPM usually doesn t do anything Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 21

Op on 6 Customiza on This screen is where you can customize the host code: High Priority Limit Indicates what cons tutes high priority workload when looking at MPG s priority graphs. First shi is deemed as normal day processing (8 am 5:30 pm). Second shi is deemed as nightly processing (8 am 5:30 pm). NOTE: It is recommended that you don t adjust these parameters. See Next page for more Op on 6 Customiza on parameters. Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 22

Performance Data Library Job PERFNAVDR uses this parameter to know where the IBM raw data is being collected (via Collec on Services). Warning: If this library is not the same as what s occurring in the CRTPFRDTA job, the historical data will not be processed correctly. Example: The Performance data library is QPFRDATA but collec on services is collec ng in QMPGDATA. This out of sync condi on will cause gaps in your historical data. See below: No ce the gap (missing data) Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 23

Op on 7 Performance Navigator Status This screen is used to understand your current environment. 1) Indicates the IBM raw data is being collected correctly. You should always see ACTIVE for both. 2) Next, we look at the IBM Performance data sec on. It shows: The performance data library The number of members Version/Release Date Range of the exis ng data Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 24

Note: It is best prac ce to upgrade the host code every year. 4) Indicates the historical data informa on: Last successful data reduc on date Date range of the exis ng data IBM i system Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 25

Installing PN/400 (Manual Batch Install) Manual Batch Install: You need a SAVF named MPGLIBDST on the machine. In Performance Navigator, File > Install PN/400, steps you through crea ng the SAVF (CRTSAVF QGPL/MPGLIBDST) and pu ng PN400.SAV into it. You can distribute the SAVF to your machines in any manner that is convenient for you. Using Performance Navigator is the best way for most customers. Once a SAVF exists on a machine, most customers will use Performance Navigator to complete the installa on. For those customers who do not wish to use Performance Navigator, the following three commands can be entered using a green screen command line to complete the installa on. RSTLIB MPGLIBDST DEV(*SAVF) SAVF(QGPL/MPGLIBDST) CALL MPGLIBDST/MPGINSTALL MPGLIB/CFGPERFNAV Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 26

Understanding the Keycode Process Like other so ware products, Performance Navigator (PerfNav ) requires a so ware key to run the applica on successfully. New keys may be needed for several reasons: Ini al Product Purchase to ac vate full func onality of the product. A er hardware upgrades where the IBM i to which the code was originally licensed has been replaced by a new IBM i with a different serial number. A er installing a new version of Performance Navigator. To ac vate all func ons of the so ware on a temporary basis for product evalua on. To ac vate all func ons of the so ware for capacity planning usually done by Midrange Performance Group, Inc. (MPG) or a business partner. Keycode Rule of Thumb: The keycode is dependent on the PerfNav version and the serial number of the machine. See next page on how to apply the keycode. Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 27

Understanding the Keycode Process (cont.) To enter the keycode, click Edit > System Op ons > Keycode. Enter the keycode in the field below: Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 28

The Navigator Panel When connec ng to systems, the system names/aliases will appear in the Navigator panel. System names will be color coordinated based on the opera ng system: See Next Page. Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 29

The Navigator Panel (cont.) Right clicking in the panel brings up many op ons. Some key things you can do: Select mul ple systems for processing Manage a group of systems Move systems within the panel Delete systems Select all LPARs for Processing Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 30

In the above example, the IBM i system is MPG520P. The alias is MyAS400. Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 32

The Four Data Levels They are as follows: By Month By Week By Date By Time Graphs by Month The graphs by month are labeled Month on the X axis. The points on the X axis are labeled with month names and the year. The values that are plo ed are month averages or totals. The month averages do not include the weekends by default. Most graphs by month allow you to drill to a lower level to view the data by week. To drill down to the week level, use the drill down toolbar bu on. Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 33

Graphs by Week The graphs by week are shown when a graph is selected from the main menu Graph op on. Graphs by week are labeled Week on the X axis. Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 34

Graphs by Date The graphs by date are labeled Date on the X axis. The points on the X axis are labeled with dates. The month names and year are centered below the values for the dates. The values plo ed are the averages or totals for one shi of the day. Most graphs by date allow you to drill up to view the data by week. You can also drill down to view the data by me of day for any day in the previous two years. To drill down to view the data by me of day, right click in the graph on the day you are interested in, then select Drill > Into (the date) in the pop up menu. Graphs by date are instrumental in understanding the impact of change: Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 35

Graphs by Time The graphs by me are labeled Time on the X axis. The points on the X axis are labeled with the me of day. The values plo ed are the averages or totals for the period ending at the me indicated. For the last 365 days, you can drill down into any interval (15 Minutes by default) to view all the jobs and the key resources used during a specific interval. To drill up to view the data by date, use the toolbar bu on with the arrows poin ng up. Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 36

To Drill Up and Down to the Different Data Levels Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 37

Graphs by Category Average Day Graphs This PerfNav exclusive allows users to average any consecu ve date range in the last 365 days. The values plo ed are average values at each me of day. For example, what CPU percent u liza on should you expect at 9:00 am? The beauty of the Average Day Graph lies in a sophis cated weighted averaging technique, which results in the average values by me of day. This is necessary because the input (i.e. performance monitor or collec on services) is not nicely arranged into 15 minute intervals. The data intervals are usually approximately 15 minutes, but they could be 5 minutes, 10 minutes, or any interval used by the IBM i performance monitor or collec on services. The interval lengths can change from day to day. The interval end mes can also vary dras cally from day to day. By default, weekends are not included in the average days. Keep in mind when looking at the default (last 4 weeks, M F) Average Day Graphs, approximately 20 daily readings went into the calcula on of each point. Note: Many of the 20 readings were less than the calculated value and many were more. This means that if at any me your average is near a guideline (e.g. 80% DASD), you are frequently over the guideline. This is important for capacity planning considera ons. Your average day must fit comfortably below the guidelines. These graphs also help determine how different peak days are from the average. See Next Page. Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 38

Average Day Graphs (cont.) In the Graphs menu: Average Day CPU is shown below: Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 39

Changing the Average Day Date Range It is important to note that one normally doesn t have to change this date range manually. In fact, the dates are automa cally changed when running Power Navigator scripts. To change the dates, see below: Edit > System Op ons > Dates No ce that, by default, the last 4 weeks are shown. Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 40

Current Day Graphs Current day graphs represent a significant advance in performance problem determina on. These graphs and the ability to drill down into any interval for more detail allow problems to be diagnosed a er thefact with unprecedented ease. These graphs display sta s cs from the IBM raw performance data and not from the MPG reduced data. By default, the last member in the performance data files is displayed. If performance data is currently being collected (which is usually the case), then the data is for the current day and the point furthest to the right is the most recent data collected. If more than 15 minutes have elapsed, it is necessary to click the Data Refresh toolbar bu on to display the most recent informa on. The me range is normally midnight to the last interval collected. See example below: Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 41

Changing Current Day Performance Members Even though the current day is shown by default, it is possible to view data for prior days. This is accomplished by: (1) Clicking the Select Past Day op on under Graphs > Current Day. When the Performance Data panel appears, click the member pulldown box in the Performance Data box or (2) Using the green arrow to move back to the previous day. Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 42

Peak Day Graphs (Used to Select Your Baseline Data for Capacity Planning) Selec ng a peak day graph will automa cally scan prior days of data searching for the day using the most of some metric. For example, what day used the most interac ve CPU? By default, the last 4 weeks are scanned over 24 hours. This is a volume analysis to determine the day that consumed the most of any metric. This may not be the peak day in terms of highest interval usage (see Maximum Interval Graphs below for highest intervals). To change the date range or the me of day that is scanned, click Graphs > Peak Day > Date/Time Range, or click Edit > System Op ons > Dates, or you can right click inside any graph by date to select the date range. There will be up to two years of data available to search. You can also set the peak day constraints (from and to date, from and to me) with a right click inside any graph by date and any graph by me, respec vely. Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 43

Peak Day Date Range Just like average day graphs, peak day date ranges are set up in a similar fashion. The date range is set up via Edit > System Op ons > Dates or simply by selec ng Graph > Peak Day > Date/Time Range. Regardless of the method, the peak date criteria can be set up with a default value (the last four weeks), or a specified period see below: Example: Edit > System Op ons > Dates Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 44

Service Level Graphs Service level graphs show the key components that can affect performance. The idea is that if these service levels are being met 95% of the me (5% being anomalies), one doesn t have to worry about the par cular component. MPG uses these best prac ce guidelines: Machine Pool Faul ng Less than 10 faults/sec Disk Arm U liza on Less than 15 % busy Response Time Average Less than 1 second Disk Response Time Less than 4 ms There are two types of Service Level Graphs: Pie Chart showing the percentage missed/made Historical graph showing how much the guideline was over 95% The trend graphs are the historical templates. The average graphs show pie charts. Let s see some examples on the next page. Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 45

Service Level Graphs - Examples Response Time Average Service Level: Historical Response Time Trend Service Level: Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 46

Changing the Service Level Guidelines MPG takes pride in providing best prac ce guidelines. That is, being performance experts, we understand the best prac ce guidelines that ensure your IBM i is opera ng op mally. Our guidelines are listed on page 43. With that said, some mes it s necessary to allow users to change the default best prac ce guidelines. Warning: Graphs > Service Levels should not be changed merely to make the graphs look good Guidelines should be changed to support environments that have abnormal service levels. An example is a home-grown application that routinely gives users a response time that exceeds 1 second. That is, measuring this type of environment to a 1 second service level doesn t make any sense. In this example, the service level guideline could be increased to 1.5 seconds. This would be more fair and accurate. Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 47

Changing the Service Level Guidelines (cont.) Users can change the guidelines via this window... Be sure to click in each field and press Enter Guidelines are measured at 4 intervals: Time Date Week Month Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 48

Why Is My Cursor Changing? As you move the cursor around the PerfNav screen, you will no ce that the cursor changes shapes in key areas. When the cursor changes, it means that it has moved into an area on the graph where we can do some hidden func onality. Listed below are the possible cursor icons, and the associated func onality. Graph Cursors This cursor appears when you are above the graphed data but s ll in the graphed area. When you hold down the le mouse bu on, you can drag the graph le or right. This only works if you are zoomed in. When you right click, you will have the op ons to copy the graph into the clipboard in a BMP format, copy the graph in a new window, or the graph from within PerfNav. When poin ng at a Trend Line, you can le click to bring up the Trend Sta s cs Window. You can also right click to select other op ons related to Trend Lines. This will be explained in The Trend Line. This will appear when you point to either end of the Trend Line. This indicates that you can now drag the end of the Trend Line to a different point on the X axis. This gives you ul mate flexibility over the date range of your trending analysis. Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 58

Why Is My Cursor Changing? (cont.) This cursor will appear when you are poin ng to the Y axis. Holding down the le bu on allows you to drag the Y axis up or down. Right clicking allows you to select some filtering/dele ng op ons. This op on is useful in filtering or dele ng outliers in the data. This cursor appears when poin ng to the le side of the X axis. It indicates that you can drag the le half of the graph either le or right. This is a neat way to posi on your data on the X axis. This cursor appears when poin ng to the right side of the X axis. It indicates that you can drag the right half of the graph either le or right. This is a neat way to posi on your data on the X axis. Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 59

The Y Axis Dragging It Up and Down It s very common that management may request a graph to always look a certain way, for example, to always show a disk space u liza on graph at 100% (Y margin). See below: When you see the cursor by dragging. See below: in the Y margin, one can change the scale Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 60

The X Axis Dragging it le and right Here we adjust the graph to have a certain amount of data shown: Here we le click and drag the data so don t see January data: The same thing can be done on the le side. Below, we ve eliminated November data: Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 61

The Trend Line Trend Lines are the straight lines that extend across a graph. Trend Lines are calculated using a linear regression algorithm. The term trend refers to the fact that over a long period of me, the underlying trend in the data is revealed. For example, over the course of months or years there may be a gradual increase in the amount of disk used each day. This trend can be used to predict future changes. The Trend Lines are dynamic, allowing the user to determine the range over which the line is calculated. This is useful to set the ini al point from which trends are calculated. By default, trends are calculated over the en re range of data (up to three years). On the Disk U liza on graph below, we see the Trend Line: Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 62

The Trend Line (cont.) By poin ng the cursor to the end of the Trend Line and dragging it to another date, you can manually adjust the star ng or ending date. With the cursor poin ng to a date within the graphed area (cursor will be an up arrow), you can also right click and select Start Trends Here or End Trends Here. One can also drag the trends (circle end points) to a desired data point Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 63

The Trend Line (cont.) One of the slickest capabili es of this product is the ability to look at the current trend and make predic ons. We all have had management ask us these types of ques ons: When will my disk drives fill up? When will my high priority CPU u liza on reach the guideline? Are response mes ge ng be er or worse? When do I need a new CPU? How much more is the machine being used today than a year ago? Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 64

The Trend Line (cont.) Another great feature is the ability to split the Trend Line, giving us the ability to do before and a er trend analysis. To split the Trend Line, right click on the Trend Line at the desired data point and select Split Trend Line. See below: Next we open the Trend Sta s cs window and select the Before vs. A er tab. No ce we show the before and a er metrics (1 & 2), along with the percentage of change (3) Note: always split a trend line a er a known change. Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 65

Pinning Graphs A neat concept in Performance Navigator is the ability to pin graphs by me together. The idea is to see various 24 hour periods side by side. To do this, right click on any interval graph also known as by me graphs. The following menu will appear: Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 66

Filtering Data Y Axis Right Click Op ons When your cursor is poin ng to the Y axis, you can right click and get the following filtering op ons: Filter greater than xx Filter less than xx Delete greater than xx Delete less than xx Note: xx is the Y axis value where you were poin ng when the right mouse bu on was clicked. These op ons will filter the data on the PC only. By clicking the Refresh toolbar bu on, you can restore the data. Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 67

Data Scope Indicator The data scope indicator can be dragged to show the available graph data. Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 68

Graph Template ID/Graph Window The PerfNav graph ID is next to the IBM i Current Connec on window. In the graph below, the graph ID is DSKU (Disk U liza on by Month): Data Window This window shows us the current values of the data. By simply posi oning the cursor on the data in the graph, we see per nent data informa on. In the above graph, we are poin ng at November Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 69

Remove Gaps in Data This is a great op on when you don t have consistent data. Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 70

Graph Proper es Graphs can be customized in many ways. One area customiza on can occur is Graph Proper es. From the workload legend, right clicking brings up the following submenu: Hide Stack/Unstack Color Graph Type (Bar, Area, Line, Dot, Pie) Move Layer (Back, Forward) Graph on Right Axis Show values Side by Side Randomize colors Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 71

Copy Bitmaps Selec ng this op on will place a bitmapped copy of the graph on the Windows Clipboard. This allows one to paste PerfNav graphs into Word, Power Point, , etc. New Window Select this op on to create an image of the current graph in another window. This facilitates side by side comparisons of mul ple graphs. In this example, we compare CPU for two separate days using the side by side func onality. Here we show where the IBM interac ve data (blue) is different than the historical data (the reason is that the collec on services data has ODBC workload included in the interac ve bucket) Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 72

Capability PerfNav provides limited capabili es without leaving the program. A graph, or set of graphs, can be ed as an a achment. To a graph, click File > on the main menu. The form will be displayed. A er you fill in the fields on the form, click the Send bu on. The Status window on the form shows progress messages while preparing and sending the . The PerfNav op on will frequently not work due to firewall and DNS complica ons. If you encounter this problem, don t spend too much me trying to fix it, because there are convenient alterna ves. For example, you can copy a graph and paste in your program. Another alterna ve is File > Save Graph As and then a ach the file in your program. Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 73

How to Do Problem Determina on In this sec on, our goal is to understanding the components of problem determina on including: Understanding how to drill down into the current day graphs (and look at the drill down report) Understanding how to run the problem determina on script By using point and click analysis, we can easily understand our current performance data. Only then, will we be able to show what is happening on our systems. Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 74

How to Do Problem Determina on (cont.) Manual Drill Down By right clicking on any interval, then selec ng Drill > Down, we bring up the data behind the graph. No ce we an ac ve jobs report for 2:20 am: Any column can be sorted with a right click: Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 75

How to Do Problem Determina on (cont.) Graphing the Drilled Down Data Upon drilling down, one can graph the data: Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 76

How to Do Problem Determina on (cont.) Filtering the Drilled Down Data Some mes during the troubleshoo ng process, it is necessary to filter out data to get a clearer picture of the problem. This is done via rightclicking on the desired field. See below: Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 77

How to Do Problem Determina on (cont.) Rese ng the Filtered Data To reset the data: Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 78

How to Do Problem Determina on (cont.) Viewing Hidden System Tasks By default, system tasks are not shown. To see them, we must un omit them: Here, we un omit (show) system tasks in the report: Report now looks as follows: Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 79

How to Do Problem Determina on (cont.) Running the Problem Determina on Script (One Interval) Problem determina on just got easier because now there is a problem determina on script we can run. We do this by right clicking on any me interval and selec ng Analyze Interval. A problem determina on script begins to run. Note: Graphs will change on the screen and no user interven on is required. A er the script runs, a What to Check First sec on appears: These are 3 core metrics that can cause issues on your IBM i system: Next, we look at other core metrics. Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 80

How to Do Problem Determina on (cont.) Running the Problem Determina on Script (One Interval) (cont.) Here we see other important metrics, along with a response me analysis. Since its 2:20 am, we don t have any 5250 users. Next, we see a top ten job analysis for CPU, IO, and memory. (Memory & System Wait Pages Not Shown) Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 81

How to Do Problem Determina on (cont.) Running the Problem Determina on Script (One Interval) (cont.) Top Ten Job Analysis: IO & Faul ng metrics are included in analysis (not shown). Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 82

How to Do Problem Determina on (cont.) Mul ple Interval Analysis Problem determina on can be done for mul ple intervals as well. We do this by showing a Trend Line and se ng it to any me range. Upon se ng the Trend Line to a desired me range, one can select Analyze Range. NOTE: Graphs will change on the screen and no user interven on is required. On the next page, we will see various pages from the output. Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 83

How to Do Problem Determina on (cont.) Mul ple Interval Analysis (cont.) What to Check First: This sec on measures three important performance components. The metrics are measured against best prac ce guidelines. In this example mul ple intervals were measured. Note: the same amount of detail as in the Analyze Interval processing is included in the report (not shown). Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 84

Performance Navigator Repor ng There is a mul tude of repor ng op ons: Report Sets Predefined Management Reports Customized Management Repor ng (CMR) Create Output Package (COP) Next, we will look at the Report Set Func onality. Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 85

Report Sets PerfNav contains so many reports and graphs that it can be overwhelming. Report sets are a convenient way to manage a set of reports and graphs. For example, you may want to define a set of graphs and reports to to individuals on a monthly basis. Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 86

Report Sets (cont.) Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 87

Report Sets (cont.) Next, we look at the save parameters: The output will be a JPG Take note of where the output is going. This can be a shared drive. Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 88

Report Sets (cont.) Next, we show the print and miscellaneous parameters: The print parameters are rarely changed, as they are pre y straigh orward. The misc. parameters are used to show: Guidelines Extrapola on Values on bars Pie chart (when applicable) Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 89

Report Sets (cont.) Next, we show the parameters. If has been set up previously, one can merely add addresses to the report set and the JPG will be sent to each address. Note: Power Analy cs script/output is not supported via report set . Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 90

Report Sets (cont.) Next, we show a list of the parameters: Orienta on Determines how the graphs are printed (landscape vs. portrait). /Disk Determines how the graphs objects are saved (.JPG vs..bmp). Graphs per Page Determines how many graphs will appear on each printed page. Height & Width in Pixels Allows customiza on of the graph size. Average Days Determines how many days are used to calculate report set average Day graphs (28 is the default). Yesterday Indicates to use yesterday s date. Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 91

Report Sets (cont.) Shi Indicates to what shi to query. Extrapolate Determines whether historical graphs will use extrapola on. Guidelines Determines whether a guideline template is placed on top of the graphs. Sub Title Title that will appear on all graphs. Address Iden fies Report Set recipients. Subject Report Set subject (i.e. Daily Reports August 1st ). Message Short descrip on of a ached graphs. Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 92

Report Sets (cont.) Next is the Graph Selec on Parameters Tab (if applicable). One can graph mul ple ASP graphs (i.e. ASP 1 & 2) within a report set. See below: Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 93

Report Sets (cont.) Next, we can select mul ple systems for our report set run. Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 94

Report Sets (cont.) Next, we can choose advanced detail scripts to run within our report sets. (all scripts not shown) Note: MPG strongly recommends that only one script be a ached to a report set. If one decides to run mul ple scripts within a single report set, unpredicted results can occur. Finally, we must save our report set. Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 95

Report Sets (cont.) Next, we will run our report set. Click File > Report Set Produc on and select the report set mode Now that we have a report set defined, we have 4 report set produc on op ons: Save to Disk Saves the report set graphs to disk. 104 Report Set Automa on (cont.) Dele ng Report Sets To Delete a Report Set, Press Delete. Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 103

Understanding Performance Navigator Scripts Performance Navigator has the amazing to ability to run pre defined comprehensive performance reports and detailed analysis with just a couple mouse clicks. The output is a structured HTML object that can be printed like a Word document or PDF. The beauty of the script process is that they complete in less than 2 minutes (on a local machine)! MPG developed a proprietary program language that executes Performance Navigator commands and func ons. These scripts (programs) reside in MPG s Factory directory and a have a.gps extension. It s important to note that these objects should not be altered in any way as doing so voids MPG s ability to provide customer support. See script example below: In the below example, no ce that each script (.GpS) has a corresponding HTML object (.GpH). Version 19 Performance Navigator Manual 104
