3 Introduction Technology has become an important part of nearly every profession and the legal profession is no exception. The information in this guide will provide you with a basic understanding of technology and services available at Syracuse University and the College of Law, which you will use daily. for Students Once you have activated your NetID, you will have university account. Your account is normally formatted as NetID@syr.edu. For example, if your NetID is jbsmith then your is jbsmith@syr.edu. For more information about your SU account, navigate to and follow the various links to login to SUmail, access through other programs, and accessing on smartphones or tablets. Wireless Internet Access - AirOrangeX Before you can use the Internet, , or online resources on campus, you will need to configure your laptop to access SU s wireless network, AirOrangeX. AirOrangeX is available throughout the College of Law and it is available in many other areas of campus, including on-campus residences. The instructions for connection your laptop will vary depending on whether it is a Mac or a PC. The instructions below are for Windows 10 and OS X Sierra. Connecting Windows 10 to AirOrangeX 1. Click on your Wi-Fi button on the bottom right of your taskbar and select AirOrangeHelp. Once selected, click "Connect". Note: Do not check to connect automatically. (rev. 4 2. You will now be connect to AirOrangeHelp. Note: The AirOrangeHelp network is a "Limited" network connection and only intended for use to security connect to AirOrangeX. This connection will not allowing internet browsing or any other network related functions. 3. Open your browser of choice. If you are not automatically directed to our AirOrangeHelp page, type into the URL location. If the site does not come up, be sure that you have successfully connected to AirOrangeHelp 4. Once on the site, click on the "Click Here" button to proceed. 5. If your download does not automatically begin, follow the instructions based on your browser to download the Network Wizard. 6. The network wizard will now download to the downloads section of the selected browser. In most cases, your browser will show you the downloaded file on the screen either at the bottom or top right. If it does not, you will need to locate the downloads area of your browser. 7. Run the NetworkWizardLoader.exe file that has been downloaded. 8. You might be prompted by a Windows 10 SmartScreen window to ensure you want to run the file. Select "Run anyway". (rev. Jan 2018) Academic Year Page 4 of 13
5 9. XpressConnect will now open. Enter your NetID and NetID password and click "Continue". 10. If successful, the XpressConnect tool will reach the "Connected" tab, display your IP Address and indicate that you are connected. Click "Done". 11. In some cases, your computer may not automatically connect to AirOrangeX. In this situation, simply click your Wi-Fi symbol in the taskbar and select "AirOrangeX" and "Connect". We recommend setting it to "Always Connect" so that your device connects whenever AirOrangeX is in range. 12. You're Connected! Your default browser will now open and redirect to our ITS Getting Connect page. 6 Connecting your Mac to AirOrangeX OS X Sierra is used in this guide, but the instructions will remain the same or similar in other versions of OS X. 1. Access wireless networks by clicking on the wireless icon in the top right-hand corner of the screen. Connect to the AirOrangeHelp network. 2. Open a browser window and navigate to Once you get to the AirOrangeHelp web page, click on the" click here" link for students, faculty, and staff. Note: OS X does not come preinstalled with Java which is used in the Cloudpath application. If your Mac has Java and it is enabled in Safari, then you will be taken through a similar process starting within your browser. Otherwise, continue with these default instructions. 3. Click the download link as shown below. Open the downloaded Cloudpath folder in Downloads, which you should be able to access from your dock. 4. Double-click the Cloudpath file to run application. 5. You may be prompted with a warning message to open the application, click Open as shown below. (rev. Jan 2018) Academic Year Page 6 of 13
7 6. In the Cloudpath application enter your NetID credentials and click Next. 7. You may be prompted several times for a local administrator account. Enter your local Mac username and password and continue with the program. 8. If the connection is successful, you will be notified by the Cloudpath application with a green Successfully Connected checkmark. 9. You're Connected! Your default browser will now open and redirect to our ITS Getting Connect page. 8 Printing for PCs Using SURA SURA, Syracuse University Remote Access, is a tool for accessing Syracuse University systems, including network drives and printers. (SURA is not available for Macs; information on printing for Macs can be found later in this document.) Download SURA to your computer Navigate to and click on Download SURA to obtain the SURA utility. Download the sura.exe file to your desktop folder. Launch SURA Double click on the sura.exe file. Enter your SU NetID username and password in the appropriate fields and click Connect. Work with printers The first time you use the SURA tool, you will need to select the College of Law printer(s) available to you for wireless printing. To do this, type LAW in the Printer Name box, click search. The printers available to all students include: LAW-LIBRARY140 LAW-LIBRARY240 LAW-LIBRARY140-2 (Note: you may have access to other printers, if you are a member of a student organization.) 1. Check the Automatically Connect To box and then select the printers listed above. 2. Click the first printer, hold down the CTRL key and click the remaining printers. 3. Click Connect. 4. If prompted with a message Windows needs to download and install a software driver click Install Driver. 5. The printers will install, after a short delay. Note: These printers are available only when SURA is running and you will be able to access them from the print menus in Word, Excel, etc. (rev. Jan 2018) Academic Year Page 8 of 13
9 Minimizing and Exiting the SURA utility To fully exit the SURA utility and disconnect your computer from the University network, right-click on the SURA icon in the System Tray and select Exit And Disconnect. (rev. Jan 2018) Academic Year Page 9 of 13
10 Printing for Mac OS X (Mavericks 10.9 & above) Preliminary steps: You may need to allow downloads from anywhere in your System Preferences by choosing Security and Privacy, unlocking with your Mac credentials, and selecting Anywhere. Download Canon printer drivers by navigating to Click Save File. Double click on the file to extract it, then click on the UFRII_v _Mac.dmg file in Downloads. Click on the UFRII_LT_LIPS_LX_Installer.pkg file and follow the steps to install the necessary drivers. (Note: Please be patient as the driver install will take several minutes) Download HP printer drivers by navigating to Click on the download link, then download and install the drivers. Adding a Printer 1. Click on the Apple icon and then select System Preferences. 2. Click on Printers & Scanners. 3. Click on the "+" under the list of printers. 4. An Add window should now show up. Look for an Advanced button on the Add window toolbar (next to Default, IP and Windows). 5. Note: If there is no Advanced button, you will need to customize your toolbar. Follow the steps below to add it: a. Control+click on the toolbar area and select Customize Toolbar... b. Drag the Advanced item over onto the toolbar and click Done. 6. Now click on the Advanced button. 7. In the Add window, in the Type field, select Windows printer via spoolss. 8. Leave the Device field set to Another Device. 9. In the URL field enter the following: smb://law-prq-03.ad.syr.edu/[nameofprinter] Note: Replace [NameOfPrinter] with one of the following (this needs to be repeated for each printer): Law-Library140 Law-Library240 Law-Library Enter a Name and Location (use the printer name as listed above) (rev. 11 11. In the Use field, choose Select Software, and add a driver as described below a. For the Law-Library140 and Law-Library240 printers, type Canon IR in the search box and then scroll down the list locate and highlight the Canon IR-ADV 4245 driver and click OK. b. For the Law-Library140-2 printer, type HP in the search box and locate the HP LaserJet 600 M601 M602 M603 driver and click OK, then click Add. You will be prompted for options on the HP printer, select the following: Check Duplex Unit (if available) Tray 3 select HP 500-Sheet Input Tray Tray 4 select HP 1500-Sheet Input Tray 12. Click Add. 13. Repeat steps 3-12 to add the other printers. 14. Attempt to print a test page and enter your SU NetID credentials. Important Note: The first time you try to print, you should be prompted to enter your credentials. Delete whatever is listed in the name box and then enter your SU NetID and password. You should save the credentials to your Keychain and you can do so by checking the Remember this password box in the authentication window. (rev. Jan 2018) Academic Year Page 11 of 13
12 Blackboard Blackboard is a course management system used by many faculty members to enhance teaching and learning. Your professors will let you know if Blackboard is being used for their course. You can browse to the University s Blackboard website at for additional Blackboard information - it has many useful links to tutorials and guides for Blackboard use. Use your NetID and password to login to the Blackboard website. ExamSoft Examplify by ExamSoft is an exam delivery tool that provides a secure environment for administering examinations. You will receive additional information from the Office of Student Systems and Administration regarding Examplify before the start of the exam period. Turnitin Turnitin is a proprietary system that identifies unoriginal material and acts as a deterrent to plagiarism. In addition to scanning millions of documents from the publicly accessible internet, books and journals, Turnitin also scans articles and papers that have been submitted to their service. ITSS will work with both faculty and students to facilitate use of TurnItIn throughout the year. Support Services The Support Services department located on the second floor of Dineen Hall in Room 219 and provides the following services: Copying (color and B&W) including folding and 3 hole paper Résumé Printing Scanning Faxing Shipping and receiving (USPS, UPS, FedEx) Information about copy cards and copying processes is in a separate document in your packet.
