5 How Do I Create an Assignment? Assignments Click on the Assignments tab. New Submission Folder Click on New Submission Folder. Page 5

6 Enter Data 1. Name the assignment 2. Choose a Folder Type. - Individual submission folders require a submission from every student in your class. - Group submission folders allows students to make a single submission to represent the work of the entire group. When a Group submission is graded the grade will populate to every student in the group. NOTE: Once you have selected and saved a Folder Type you cannot change it. Page 6

7 Save Click Save and Close when you are finished. Check Check to see if your assignment was created successfully. Page 7

8 How Do I Edit an Assignment? Assignments Click on the Assignments tab. Select Assignment Click on the Assignment you wish to edit. Page 8

9 Edit Folder Click on Edit Folder. Page 9

10 Edit Data Make your edits. You may edit the Name, Category, Grade Item, Rubrics, etc. Note: You CANNOT edit the Folder Type. This is what determines whether the Assignment is an individual submission folder or a group submission folder. If you want to change an individual Assignment to a group Assignment (or vice versa), the entire Assignments folder must be deleted and recreated. Page 10

12 How Do I Create a Group Assignment? A Group Assignment should be used if you have a group of students working on an assignment where only one submission for the entire group is desired. When a Group Assignment is turned in, it will represent the work for the whole group and when it is graded the grade will populate for every student in the group. More Tools 1. Click on the Course Tools tab on your I-Learn dashboard. 2. Select Groups. Page 12

14 Give the New Category a name, and a description if desired. Enrollment Type 1. Click on the Enrollment Type dropdown menu. 2. Change the Enrollment Type to # of Groups. Number of Groups Page 14

15 Enter the desired number of groups in the Number of Groups box. Check Group Options Make sure the Group Options are set to the desired preferences. Click on the check box to either Auto-enroll new users or Randomize users in groups. NOTE: If you do not check the Auto-enroll new users box then you will need to manually assign each student to a group after you finish creating the groups. Page 15

16 Set Up Assignment Submission Folders Check the box to Set up assignment submission folders. Save Page 16

17 Click the Save button to save this category. This will take you to a new screen titled Create Assignment Submission Folders. Create Assignment Submission Folders Name the Assignment Submission folder. This title should be the desired name of the assignment. Page 17

18 Check Category and Grade Item Settings Use the assignment menus to attach either a Category or a Grade Item. Page 18

21 How Do I Delete an Assignment? There are 2 methods of deleting an assignment. Method 1 Click on the Assignments tab. Page 21

26 "Dropbox" Changed to "Assignments" If you have found this article, you probably tried searching for something containing the word "dropbox." In a recent update, the term "dropbox" has been changed to "assignments." Try rewording your search query to reflect this change. Page 26

28 How Do I Grade an Assignment From the Assignment Tool? Assignment Click on the Assignments tab. Select Assignment Select the Assignment you wish to grade. Page 28

29 Select Submission Select the Submission you would like to grade. Evaluate Submissions A new page called Evaluate Submissions will appear. Page 29

30 Click on the name of the submission to view that submission. View Rubric If you have created a rubric for the assignment, you can view it while you grade by clicking the rubric link under the Evaluation heading on the right side. In this example we are using the Peer Assessment rubric. Page 30

31 Grading Using the Rubric Once your rubric has been pulled up, you can select the desired score depending on how well the student performed by clicking on the radio buttons. Page 31

32 Save and Record To finish your grading using the rubric, click the Save and Record button to finish. Grading Manually If there is no rubric associated with this assignment, you can manually input the score in the Score box. Page 32

33 Feedback Comments can also be added in several different ways. 1. Typing in the feed 2. Attaching a file 3. Recording an audio file to give verbal feedback 4. Recording a video Publish or Update Page 33

34 To finish grading this assignment, click the Publish button in the bottom right. If you have already graded it and are adjusting it, then the Publish button will change to Update. Next Student or Group To move on to the next student to grade, click the Next Student or Next Group link in the top right. Page 34

36 Assignment Locate an assignment in the gradebook. 1. Click on the arrow to the right of the name of the assignment. 2. Click on Grade All. Page 36

37 Select Submission Look under the Submission column. Click on an assignment icon in the submission column to grade that assignment. NOTE: If the grade is input directly into the Grade column, the student's score will display in the students Grades area, but it will not display in the Class Progress area. It is Highly recommended to NOT input scores directly into the Grade column. Page 37

47 How Do I Create a New Grade Item for an Assignment? Every graded activity needs a grade item. If you create a new graded activity such as a Discussion Board, Assignment, or Quiz, you will need to also create and associate a grade item to that graded activity. 1. 69 How Do I Annotate a Student Submitted Document in Assignments? I-Learn does not have a native document annotation tool, so this process involves downloading the documents in bulk, completing the annotations via Track Changes in Microsoft Word and bulk uploading the documents back into I-Learn. This example shows this process on a Windows computer. The process will be slightly different if you are using a Mac. Assignments Tab Click the Assignments tab in the upper navigation bar. Page 69

71 Select Submissions 1. Select all submissions by clicking the checkbox next to Download. 2. Click Download. Download File 1. A window will appear. When it is ready for download, click the file to download the zip file. Page 71

72 Drag File to Desktop Drag the downloaded zip file to your desktop. Extract Files 1. Right click the file. 2. Select Extract All. Confirm Extraction 1. A window will appear. Make sure the box Show extracted files when complete is checked. Page 72

Open the file inside the folder. Note that the students names are beside which folder contains their files. Page 73

74 Leave Feedback Leave relevant annotations on the assignment through Track Changes in Microsoft Word. Save Document Save the document in the same folder. NOTE: Be careful NOT to make any changes the file name of the document. Page 74

75 Grade Other Submissions Repeat the last 3 steps for each submission. Zip Files 1. Select all the folders of submissions. 2. Right click the selection. 3. Go to Send to. 4. Click Compressed (zipped) folder. Page 75

76 Add Feedback Files Return to I-Learn and find the Folder Submissions page for the assignment (the same page you downloaded submissions from) click Add Feedback Files at the top of the page. 92 How Do I Grant a Student Special Access to an Assignment? Special Access allows an Instructor to override start dates, due dates, and end dates in an Assignment. These features are often required to address the needs of student with exceptional circumstances. Assignments Tab Click the Assignments tab. Page 92

Note: If you're granting early access to a student, this only grants access to the assignment through the assignments tool. 98 How Do I Switch an Assignment Submission from "View as Page" to "View as Text"? While grading a assignment submission the default setting is to show it as a page with all of the formatting and images intact. In this view the Teacher is unable to highlight or copy any of the text from the submission. If you need to copy and paste submission text you can change the view to "View as Text". This eliminates the formatting and any tables, graphs, or images but give the teacher the ability to highlight, copy and past. Assignment Click on the Assignments tab Page 98

104 How Do I Receive Notifications When a Student Submits an Assignment? Instructors can setup notifications whenever a new assignment submission is received. Receiving an for every assignment subission may overwhelm your inbox. If you would like to receive notifications for only those assignments turned in late, it is recommended that you setup the notifications after the due date or after you have graded the majority of the class. Assignments Go to the Assignments tool. Page 104

114 How Do I Detach Rubrics From Assignments? Assignments Tab Click on the Assignments tab. Assignment Submission Folders 1. Click the dropdown arrow. 2. Select Edit Submission Folder. Page 114

115 Edit Submission Folder Remove the rubric by clicking the X. NOTE: After clicking the X, you will receive a notice stating "Deleting rubrics could result in loss of data!". It is not advised to delete rubrics after grading with them. However, if you have not graded using the rubric, you will not lose data. Page 115

118 How Do I Set Up My Turnitin Assignment? Turnitin is a third-party plagiarism checker which intigrates with I-Learn. Before it can be used with I-Learn, Turnitin needs to be enabled. If you want to use a rubric you have already created inside of I-Learn you should not attach a Turnitin rubric. 3. ETS creates automatically generated comments for grammatical errors. To learn more about this service got to this link: ETS e-rater technology 4. Check Yes to save these settings as your defaults for all future assignments. NOTE: All settings, rubrics and customizations are connected to the user account rather than the assignment. So any future courses your teach in I-Learn will carry these settings, even between different courses. 5. Click Submit, then close the window. Page 126

141 How Do I Sync My Turnitin Grades with I-Learn? Many teachers use Turnitin strictly for the originality score and the annotation feature (GradeMark ). If you also want to use Turnitin as the location for inputting grades then you will need to sync these items in I-Learn before students can see it. This guide will show you how.
