1 Creating a Dropbox (version 10.2) COURSE ELEMENTS / DROPBOX The following documentation will show you, the instructor, how to create a dropbox folder to enable electronic submissions from within a D2L course. Basic Dropbox instructions are included in STEPS 1-3. INSTRUCTIONS: Select Dropbox from the Course Elements tab on the Course Home page then select New Folder. STEP 1: Add a name for the dropbox in the space provided. If you would like to use the Check for Originality (Turnitin), or Grademark to digitally markup an assignment, click the Originality Check box (previously Plagiarism Detection). STEP 2: Choose a Folder Type. An Individual submission folder means that each student can only view their own submissions. If a Group submission folder is designated, a specific group must be created and selected displaying the group dropbox to the selected group only. (Both selections are shown below.) NOTE: All members of a group dropbox will be able to see the submissions of others in the group. An individual submission folder should be created if submissions are to be viewed by the instructor only.

2 STEP 3: In order to grade the assignment directly from the dropbox, a Grade Item must be created and associated from the dropdown menu. The point value of the assignment must also be added. A Grade Item can be created in the Gradebook or by using the New Grade Item selection noted below. (The Category section is optional) Rubrics can also be created and associated from the droppbox area. NOTE: Associating grade items with a dropbox folder will allow grading from within the dropbox area. This will automatically transfer a user s score to the grades section of D2L. OPTIONAL STUDENT VIEW: When the dropbox is associated with a grade item, the Student View Preview enables editing the student view properties. Default settings can also be overridden by using Override display options for this item.

3 OPTIONAL: Attach any necessary files by selecting Add a File. STEP 4: Use Submission Options to determine how submissions will be processed. If students may need to submit multiple documents make sure to check Unlimited in the Files Allowed per Submission area. Also determine how multiple submissions will be processed. Choose to keep all submissions, overwrite submissions replacing the old with the new, or only allow one submission per dropbox. Consider the following scenario: If a student turns in an assignment then wants to turn it in again an hour later should that be possible and if so, how many files are going to be saved? OPTIONAL: (for use with Originality Check) This will appear only if Originality Check was enabled when the dropbox was created. These features refer to the Turnitin integration. There are many options available to you when generating originality reports. The following are screen shots of the options.

4 Select Save and Close to complete the dropbox creation. The Dropbox Folder has been created and is displayed below. Note that the icons to the right of the folder indicate that the Originality Check is being used, a Grade Item has been associated with this folder and it is a Group dropbox.

5 SETTING RESTRICTIONS: If you wish to set restrictions on when the dropbox will be available for student submissions click the Restrictions tab at the top of the New Folder page before selecting Save and Close. This tab will allow you to set date and time restrictions, release conditions, and access to the dropbox. These restrictions can also be changed at a later date by selecting the edit mode in the newly created folder. Detailed instructions can be found on the Setting Restrictions documentation.
