2 Upgrading a Workstation that had Amicus with CompuLaw This section describes how to upgrade the CompuLaw Link at a Workstation where the Link was used with Amicus 2010 or Please read through these instructions first. It is important that you understand the entire process before starting. STEP 1 Completed upgrade of Amicus Attorney 2012 Ensure that you have upgraded the Workstation to Amicus Attorney 2012 as instructed in the appropriate Install/Upgrade Guide, available from the Support > Technical Resource Guides section at CAUTION: For those upgrading, the instructions required that you back up CompuLaw items (including your Court Rule Sets and COMPULAW.INI file) and use SQL Management tools to back up your CompuLaw database. Ensure that you have completed these backup steps before proceeding. STEP 2 Install the CompuLaw Software In this step, you ll install the CompuLaw Date Calculation software and, if necessary, create the CompuLaw database. This must be done on each Workstation. 1 To enable the CompuLaw software to detect the location of Amicus Attorney, edit the Windows Registry as follows. Go to the Windows Start Menu. (In Windows 7 or Vista, click All Programs > Accessories > Run.) In the Run field, enter regedit. At the left in the Windows Registry, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion \App Paths\AmicusAtt10.exe Or, if you have a 64-bit version of Windows, navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432NODE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion \App Paths\AmicusAtt10.exe At the right, double-click on the (Default) item and, in the Value Data field, enter the path to your Amicus Attorney 2012 program, typically: C:\AMICUS\AMICUS ATTORNEY 2012 SMALL FIRM\AmicusAtt12.exe 2 Download the CompuLaw software from: Be sure to choose the Small Firm Edition Download. 3 Double-click the AmicusSmallFirmCLawNew.exe file and follow the instructions, installing the software to the default location supplied, which will be a CompuLaw folder within your Amicus Workstation location, typically: 4 When asked to create the CompuLaw database, click No. Install/Upgrade Instructions for CompuLaw with Amicus Attorney Small Firm Edition 2013 Gavel & Gown Software Inc. 2

3 STEP 3 Prepare your CompuLaw data In this step, you will copy the backed up CompuLaw Court Rules to the Amicus 2012 Workstation. 1 In the Amicus\Amicus Attorney 2012 Small Firm\CompuLaw folder, rename the DATA folder to DATA_UNUSED 2 Copy your previously backed up DATA folder from its temporary location to the Amicus\Amicus Attorney 2012 Small Firm\CompuLaw folder. 3 Open your previously backed up COMPULAW.INI file in its temporary location and copy the [Connection String] section heading and DBConnect line underneath. 4 In the Amicus\Amicus Attorney 2012 Small Firm\CompuLaw folder, open the COMPULAW.INI file and paste in the two copied lines, adding or replacing text as appropriate. 5 In the Amicus\Amicus Attorney 2012 Small Firm folder, open the COMPULAW.INI file and paste in the two copied lines, adding or replacing text as appropriate. STEP 4 Run the Court Rule Maintenance Application In this step, you will run the Court Rule Maintenance application. 1 Go to the following folder: and double-click the file CRDMaint.exe. 2 In Court Rule Maintenance, ensure that Live Update is configured to a valid folder as the location to which updates should be downloaded, typically: \Rule Updates. IMPORTANT: You must ensure that any Court Rule updates are applied at all Workstations. That s It Once you are done with the Court Rule update process, you can use Amicus Attorney to generate your Court Deadlines. 4 Installing CompuLaw for the first time at a Workstation This section details how to install CompuLaw at a Workstation where the CompuLaw Link was not used previously. Please read through these instructions first. It is important that you understand the entire process before starting. STEP 1 Completed install of Amicus Attorney Ensure that you have installed Amicus Attorney 2012 at the Workstation as instructed in the appropriate Install/Upgrade Guide, available from the Support > Technical Resource Guides section at STEP 2 Install Microsoft SQL Server Express The CompuLaw software is Microsoft SQL based. You will need SQL Server Express on each Amicus Workstation. Downloading and installing SQL Server Express: Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express is available as a free download from the following Web page: Choose the Runtime with Management Tools download. Follow the instructions shown on the download page. Make note of the following SQL credentials that will be needed later: SQL Server name. If you have installed SQL Server Express, this will typically be in the format <computer name>\sqlexpress, where <computer name> is the name of the computer on which SQL Server Express is installed and SQLExpress is the SQL instance name. If you are instead using a full-use version of SQL Server, you will need to get the SQL Server name from your System Administrator. System administrator name (typically sa ) and password. STEP 3 Install the CompuLaw Software and create the CompuLaw Database In this step, you ll install the CompuLaw Date Calculation software and, if necessary, create the CompuLaw database. This must be done on each Workstation. 1 Create a new folder named CompuLaw Database under the \Amicus folder. We recommend that you create it directly under \Amicus (rather than under an Amicus Attorney subfolder) to ensure it will not be uninstalled if Amicus Attorney is uninstalled or upgraded later. 2 To enable the CompuLaw software to detect the location of Amicus Attorney, edit the Windows Registry as follows. Go to the Windows Start Menu. (In Windows 7 or Vista, click All Programs > Accessories > Run.) In the Run field, enter regedit. 5 Or, if you have a 64-bit version of Windows, navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432NODE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion \App Paths At the left, right-click on App Paths and choose New > Key. Enter its name as AmicusAtt10.exe At the right, double-click on the (Default) item and, in the String Value field, enter the path to your Amicus Attorney 2012 program, typically: C:\AMICUS\AMICUS ATTORNEY 2012 SMALL FIRM\AmicusAtt12.exe 3 Download the CompuLaw software from: Be sure to choose the Small Firm Edition Download. 4 Double-click the AmicusSmallFirmCLawNew.exe file and follow the instructions, installing the software to the default location supplied, which will be a CompuLaw folder within your Amicus Workstation location, typically:. 5 When asked to create the CompuLaw database, click Yes and follow the instructions. You will need your SQL credentials from STEP 2. IMPORTANT: Do not select the Use Integrated Login checkbox. When asked where to create the database, choose the \Amicus\CompuLaw Database folder that you created. STEP 4 Prepare your CompuLaw data If this is the very first Workstation at which the CompuLaw Link is installed, skip this step. If there are other Team Members using the CompuLaw Link (and have loaded Rule Sets), copy their CompuLaw Court Rules and restore their CompuLaw database to the new Amicus Workstation: 1 At an Amicus 2012 Workstation already using the CompuLaw Link, copy the following item to a temporary location on the new Workstation. \Amicus Attorney 2012 Small Firm\CompuLaw\DATA 2 At the new Workstation, a Rename the new DATA folder to DATA_UNUSED in the following folder: b Copy your backed up DATA folder from its temporary location to the CompuLaw folder. 3 Use SQL Management tools to back up the CompuLaw database from the existing Amicus Workstation where CompuLaw is used and then restore it to your SQL Express at the new Workstation, replacing the CompuLaw database you created when installing CompuLaw there. 6 STEP 5 Run the Court Rule Maintenance Application In this step, you will run the Court Rule Maintenance application. You will need to register the software with CompuLaw and create the supervisor. 1 At the Workstation, go to the following folder: and double-click the file CRDMaint.exe. 2 You ll be asked to log into the application. The first user you log in as will be used to create a Supervisor user. The Supervisor user has complete access to all functions of the application. In the login dialog, enter the initials you d like to use for this user and click OK. This will display the User Information dialog. Make sure that the Supervisor option is checked, enter the user s name and password (the password is optional). Click Save to save the user information and return to the login dialog. Click OK to login as the Supervisor user. IMPORTANT: For future reference, make a note of the Supervisor user initials and password. 3 You will need to register the software with CompuLaw. a. Click the Misc option on the main menu and then select the Office Information option. b. Enter the information from your product registration printout that you received from CompuLaw and then click Save. 4 To facilitate the Live Update feature, create a folder (typically named Rule Updates) within the CompuLaw folder:. In Court Rule Maintenance, configure Live Update, specifying this folder as the location to which updates should be downloaded. 5 If this is the first Workstation using the CompuLaw Link, load your Court Rule Sets as instructed by CompuLaw. IMPORTANT: You will need to ensure that any Court Rule updates are applied to all applicable Workstations. TIP: For convenience, we recommend that you create a Desktop shortcut for the Court Rule Maintenance program. Simply right-click on the CRDMaint.exe file and choose Send To > Desktop.
