2 I2000 Interface Watchware Installation & Help. Uninstall any previous versions that you have on your computer. What s in the box: Interface Cradle: The Interval 2000 is placed onto the cradle and communicates optically. USB / Adapter Cable: Plugs into the interface and an available USB port on your PC. This cable includes an integrated Serial to USB adapter which requires separate drivers installed. Digitus USB-RS232 Adapter CD-ROM: Installs drivers required for the USB to Serial adapter cable provided. Must be installed fi rst! Interval Watchware Application CD-ROM: Installs Interval Watchware Communication Software that pulls the data from the Interval 2000 watch. Install the USB - Serial Adapter BEFORE plugging the adapter cable into your computer, load the blue-green Digitus USB-RS232 Adapter CD-ROM (with the Install First sticker) into your computer s drive. Browse to the CD-ROM in My Computer and open the PC folder. Double-click PL-2303 Driver Installer.exe. Follow the on-screen prompts to install the drivers for the USB adapter cable. When the Install Shield Wizard Complete window appears, click Finish. Now, plug the USB connector of the cable into your computer. On Plug and Play compatible versions of Windows, a Found New Hardware icon will appear, followed shortly by a message that your new hardware is installed and ready for use. (On older versions of Windows, you may need to complete the Add New Hardware process manually. Refer to the documentation for your operating system for more information.) Your adapter cable is now installed and ready to use with the Interface. You will need to fi nish setting up the communication (COM) port after you install the Watchware program. Installing Watchware V2.3.1 Insert CD & it will autorun If autorun is not enabled, select from the installation CD. Follow the installation sequence. If get the following error, select OK. If you get the following error, select Ignore. 2

3 The installation should install an icon on your desktop. Interval WatchWare.lnk If the icon points to the wrong directory where the program is located, then go into properties and change the target to: C:\Program Files\Interval Watchware\WatchWare.exe (or where ever you have installed the watchware.exe fi le) Click on the icon & the program should run. If no icon is located on your desktop, you can create one from your start menu. When you open the program, you will need to set the Communications Port so that the interface can talk to the USB data. Go to file, upload watchware data then a new window will open. Under settings, there will be Communications Port. Change this number to that which was set by the USB adapter installation. WATCHWARE DLL ERROR ON INSTALLATION Interval Watchware Critical Error Description: The Jet VBA file (VBAJET.dll for 16 bit version, orvbajet 32. dll for 32-bit versions) failed to initalize when called. Try reinstalling that returned error. This is a Microsoft issue. When we developed the software, any PC running Offi ce 95 or higher would have particular dll fi les installed (vbajet32.dll and vbar332.dll). Newer computers that have Offi ce 98 or higher don t necessarily have these fi les. If you have this problem then you only need to run the fi le jet3ssp3.exe that is located on the CD. NO HELP FILES INSTALLED. If after installation you have no help fi les available, then copy the fi le help fi le.hlp from the CD to the directory that you have installed WatchWare in. 4 Timing a Small Head Race or Practice with One Watch by Amy Winner A fairly common rowing practice consists of time trails or head race pieces. This article explains how to time a small head race or practice by yourself. It can sometimes seem overwhelming, but it s not diffi cult to manage an entire head race or practice by yourself. As long you can get from the last boat on the starting line to the fi rst boat at the fi nish line, all you need is one watch. Here s how: Start boats on a reasonable center, somewhere between 10 and 20 seconds. Take a split for each boat on your watch, making sure to write down which split corresponds to each boat. After the last boat across the line, make your way to the fi nish line. Again, take splits for each boat across the line, noting the splits and boats. After the last boat crosses the finish line, stop your watch. For most watches, you will now have to write down the start and fi nish split for each boat and do some math. If you have an Interval Watch and interface, you can upload the data and let the software do the work for you. If you are running several events, you will need to get back to the starting line before you can start the next event. If you have a multi-segment watch (like the Interval, of course), you can simply start a new segment and start timing again, without losing the data from the fi rst event. You can continue this way until you ve run all of your events, and write down or upload your data later. With a single-segment watch, you ll just need to write down the data between events so you can clear the watch and start over. Timing a medium-sized head race or time trial with Several Watches You can use the Interval to time medium-sized head races or time trial pieces. You will, however, need more than one stop watch. Here s how to set it up You need to have a timer at both the start and fi nish lines. Synchronize the start and fi nish watches by starting them at the same time. This can be done pretty easily with a cell phone or two-way radio. As each boat crosses the starting line, take a split with the starting watch, and make note of the competitor name or number. Repeat this as each subsequent boat crosses the starting line. Follow the same scheme at the fi nish line with the fi nish watch, taking a split and noting the bow number for each boat. Recording fi nish order is very important at the fi nish line, as boats may have passed one another throughout the course. If you need to time another event, you have several options: Continuous - simply leave the watch running and keep sending boats across the starting line. In this instance, the no results can be determined until the fi nal boat fi nishes the race. Start a new watch segment - create a new segment in your watch, and begin timing the next event as explained before. (You will need to have watches that can store times in multiple segments or events.) You will need to re-synchronize the start and fi nish watches, requiring you to wait until the previous event is complete. Log and clear - schedule a break in between events and write down or upload the times. The watches can then be cleared and timing may resume. Results can be posted as soon as the start and fi nish times are compiled. However, you will need to re-synchronize the watches in this case also, again requiring you to wait until the previous event is complete. With times and notes retrieved, recall the times and apply them to the respective boats. The rest is simple mathematics - subtract the starting line time from the fi nish line time. To speed up obtaining results and to further ensure their accuracy, use tools such as spreadsheets and watches with upload capabilities. 4

6 Timing an Entire Head Race Regatta with Several Watches Part 2 by Amy Winner. In this final chapter, we ll explain how a large, full-day regatta can be timed without the need for a pricey timing system. While most multi-memory stopwatches will work, utilizing one that has upload capability makes for producing fast, accurate results. The fi rst thing to do is organize the timing teams and tools. Three teams are needed: a starting line timing team, a fi nish line timing team and a results team. Each of the two timing teams will need a few stopwatches, a notebook or heat sheets, and a two-way radio or cell phone. The results team will need a laptop with upload peripheral, spreadsheet software, and a printer. Taking the times is exactly the same as described in the last issue (please refer to IRN: Volume 8, Issue 16). Briefl y: synchronize the starting of both watches via phone or radio; the starting line watch takes splits as each boat crosses the line, while the bow numbers are recorded; the fi nish line watch takes splits as each boat crosses the line, while the bow numbers are recorded; subtract the coordinating starting times from the fi nish times and voila you have results. The key to producing fast results for a multi-event regatta, is what goes on away from the race course. When an event concludes, the two watches used and boat order sheets must be retrieved and brought to the results team - having a good runner on bike or car is extremely helpful. Here, upload or write down the data from the watches and apply the coinciding boat information to the times. Once the data from the watches has been uploaded or written down, create a new segment and return the watches to the timing teams for more events. The data can now be transferred into a pre-designed spreadsheet*. Through the magic of formulas and look-up tables, times can be calculated in seconds. After randomly checking a few times against the backup system, results can be printed and posted. (Note: while we obviously recommend that the Interval 2000 and Interface work ideally for this project, we do suggest using a printing stopwatch, such as the Seiko, as a backup reference system.) Meanwhile, back on the course, other sets of watches are being used to time more events. Utilizing three or four sets of watches will ensure a consistent rotation, eliminating the worry of being left without watches to time an event. Unlike sprint races, when everyone knows who won right away, the wait for results from a headrace can often be tedious and frustrating. This scheme can help speed up the results process and make any regatta more exciting and enjoyable for everyone. FAQ Do I really need to use the plastic cover? Yes. It is important to utilize the cover in order to prevent damage. By placing the cover over the window whenever there is the possibility of being subjected to a sharp blow or impact, you can dramatically cut down the damage done to your Interval Why is the display dimming/faint? If your display begins to dim, it is time to replace the batteries. REMEMBER all unsaved data will be lost when the batteries are changed. How do I turn on my backlight? / How do I turn off my backlight? The backlight on the Interval 2000 turns on and off automatically whenever the low light sensor is activated by low light conditions or deactivated by high light conditions. 6
