6 1 Getting Started with Command View TL Overview HPE Command View for Tape Libraries (CVTL) manages TapeAssure, Licensing, and Data Verification. For remote management, HPE Command View TL software provides a browser-based GUI that enables you to do the following: Manage the entire library system Manage licenses Access TapeAssure and Data Verification features Using Command View TL, you can manage the ESL G3, MSL G3, and MSL6480 libraries. The ESL G3 and MSL6480 libraries support graph and tabular data for TapeAssure and Data Verification. The MSL G3, 1/8 Autoloader, and standalone LTO drives support graph and tabular data for TapeAssure. IMPORTANT: For managing ESL G3 and MSL6480 libraries, you must add ESL G3 and MSL6480 licenses to the library. Some licenses get applied directly after managing the library, whereas the other licenses must be added for libraries. Command View TL lists ESL G3 and MSL 6480 libraries on the Libraries screen, displays the status of the library, and launches the ESL G3, MSL G3, and MSL6480 GUI in a separate browser. You can manage other ESL G3 and MSL6480 library features directly from the Libraries screen. For more information on ESL G3 tape libraries, see the HP Enterprise Systems Libraries (ESL) G3 Tape Library User Guide available at For more information on MSL6480 tape libraries, see the HPE StoreEver MSL6480 Tape Library User and Service Guide available at SNIA compliance The Storage Management Initiative (SMI) was created by the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) to develop and standardize interoperable storage management technologies and aggressively promote them to the storage, networking, and end user communities. For more information about SNIA and the SMI, see The HPE Command View TL Provider follows the Storage Management Initiative Specification (SMI-S) and provides an interface for SMI-S compliant applications to manage HPE StoreEver tape libraries. For installation instructions, see HPE StoreEver Command View for Tape Libraries Software SMI-S Provider installation instructions at NOTE: While installing Command View TL on the same management station as Command View EVA v10.2, special steps must be taken. For full instructions, see HPE StoreEver Command View for Tape Libraries Software SMI-S Provider installation instructions at support/cvtl. HPE Data Verification APIs for ISV Data Verification assesses the quality of data on a tape to get a read back confidence for data stored on the tape. CVTL provides an interface to perform data verification of tapes and manage and monitor the verification process. CVTL also consolidates the result of the verification for later review. Data Verification is a web based solution. The drive assessment test is provided to assess the quality of a drive and ensure that the drive health does not influence the results of the data assessment test. Through API, you can conduct a drive assessment test for drives in DV and user partition. For performing the test, you must ensure the tape provided is a known good tape 6 Getting Started with Command View TL

7 as it might affect the results of the drive. Drive Assessment test is a destructive operation and all data on the cartridge will be lost. HPE Data Verification APIs for ISV 7

8 NOTE: REST is a style of software architecture for building distributed systems consisting of clients and servers. Clients initiate requests and the servers process these requests and return responses. The response contains a representation of the requested resource. REST is protocol independent. CVTL uses Secure Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTPS) as the application protocol. The interface is developed using the RESTful APIs. Integration with QStar ASM QStar ASM software archives your data on the tape using several tape formats. Files can be stored for long time periods and reside on the tape until you request for the files. You can use the Data Verification feature of CVTL to verify that tape media is still accessible and that the data can be retrieved from the media reliably. The media is submitted to the CVTL software and verified for health. If the media is found not to be 100% healthy, the QStar ASM software copies data from media to another to extent data life beyond the life of the physical media. The following QStar ASM subsystems are engaged in the media verification process: Tape library configuration subsystem Provides features to define network connectivity parameters to CVTL and to physical library. You can also define various verification scheduling parameters through this configuration subsystem. QStar ASM scheduling subsystem Provides scheduling of the utility that executes the requests to the CVTL services. Interactive CLI utility Performs manual media verification. The GUI pages manage configuration and display of the verification results. For Windows, all tasks can be performed through Windows QStar ASM Administrator GUI pages. For UNIX systems, the preferred interface is Command Line Interface utilities. You can also use CLI utilities to manage Windows CVTL support and to perform Windows scripting and other languages such as PHP or Perl. QStar supports the following Operating Systems: Windows (2008, 2012) Linux (RedHat/Centos 6.5, Ubuntu 12.04, Ubuntu 14.04) 8 Getting Started with Command View TL

9 Solaris 10/11 (x86_64, Sparc) AIX (6.1, 7.1) For more about configuration, refer HPE CVTL Support Manual. The following are the options and features provided by QStar: notification in Windows and Unix systems. Manual media health verification. Automatic media verification. Displaying media health verification results. Media health database backup. Media verification scheduling. Processing automatic media copy actions depending on availability of the system resources. System requirements Management station compatibility Compatible with VMware ESX, 5.0, 5.1, and 5.5. Command View TL software is fully compatible with only English-language versions of Windows.
