2 Getting Started This video assumes you ve already downloaded and installed PERRLA. After installation, the Launch PERRLA icon will be on your desktop. Just double-click this yellow PERRLA pencil to get started. While PERRLA is loading, it runs diagnostics to make sure your PERRLA environment is properly configured. If PERRLA discovers a problem, it will provide you with additional information and instructions. Once PERRLA has finished loading, you ll see the contents of the Welcome tab. The PERRLA startup application consists of a number of menu tabs that each have their own content. We ll quickly go through these to provide a brief overview of each tab. Then, we ll cover some of the tabs in more detail, as needed. The Welcome tab is where you can start a new paper or open an existing paper. The Getting Started tab is where you will find this video and others to help you get started with PERRLA. Page 2

3 The My PERRLA Papers tab shows a list of Word documents found within your My PERRLA Papers folder. The My PERRLA Products tab shows the PERRLA products that you have purchased and their activation status. The System Info tab shows information specific to your computer that may be helpful if you need to contact our Customer Support group. The Settings tab allows you to configure the PERRLA startup application and set a nickname for the computer on which PERRLA is installed. The Contact Support provides quick access to submit a support request. Now, let s go into a little more detail about each tab Page 3

4 The Welcome tab consists of 4 buttons. Two of them are dedicated to creating new APA papers - one for 6 th Edition-compliant papers and one for the older 5 th Edition. You will also find a button here to create a new MLA paper and, finally, a button to open an existing PERRLA Paper. Note that the Open an Existing PERRLA Paper button is a shortcut to the My PERRLA Papers tab. Page 4

5 The Getting Started tab is where you will find videos and documentation that will help you get started and learn more about PERRLA. Additional videos and documentation are available on our website. To jump to the Help Center section of our website, simply click on the link found at the bottom of this tab. Page 5

6 As was mentioned earlier, the My PERRLA Papers tab shows a list of Word documents found within your My PERRLA Papers folder. Double-clicking the filename or clicking the Open button will open the chosen paper in Microsoft Word. If you store your papers in a different location, you can use the Browse button in the bottom right corner to navigate to the folder where the papers are stored. While this tab, by default, shows the papers in the My PERRLA Papers folder, you CAN change this setting on the Settings tab so that displays the folder of your choice. Page 6

7 On the My PERRLA products tab you can see which PERRLA products you currently own and the activation status of each product. Before you can start writing your first paper, PERRLA will prompt you to activate the software. Click the Activate button to initiate the Activation process. This step only takes a minute or less. For more details, see our Activation video. If you have no activations remaining and need to activate the software on a new computer, you may click the Manage My Activations link to go to our website. There, after logging in, you can deactivate a previous installation that you are no longer using in order to free-up an activation for your new computer. If you need to activate PERRLA on more than 3 computers at one time, you may purchase additional activations for only ten dollars each. Page 7

8 The information on the System Info tab is gathered when PERRLA is loaded and is useful for troubleshooting. The Computer Nickname and the PERRLA Papers path can be altered on the Setting tab. All of the other information is read-only. By the way, the Computer Nickname is entered when you activate PERRLA and helps you keeps track of the computers on which PERRLA is activated. Page 8

9 The Settings tab allows you to configure various options within PERRLA. The My PERRLA Papers field lets you specify the folder that is used when displaying documents in the My PERRLA Papers tab. By default, this is the folder that PERRLA uses when you save a paper. Changing the folder here will optionally allow you to change the folder that Microsoft Word uses by default when saving papers. The PERRLA Startup field allows you to choose whether or not the PERRLA startup application closes while you are writing a paper. The Computer Nickname field allows you to give each one of your computers a unique nickname. These computer nicknames are shown on our website when you log in to manage your activations. Page 9

10 If, for any reason, you d like to contact the PERRLA Customer Support group, the fastest way is to do so on the Contact Support tab. Enter your address, select an Issue Type, choose the Product, and enter your question or comment in the Description field. If you need to attach a file, click the Browse button to search for and select the file. Clicking the Submit to Support button will send your request directly to our support group. Between the hours of 8:00am and 10:00pm (Central time) we respond via to every request within 3 hours and usually faster than that. Page 10
