2 Microsoft Live To use Microsoft Live you must have a Microsoft Live or Hotmail account. You should always have an account you don t read for these types of operations. Figure 1: Windows Live I have linked Live with my Facebook and LinkedIn accounts as well Live Messenger. Therefore, I can see my feeds all in one place instead of connecting to different social networking services. First we will explore the Microsoft Live Office features by clicking on the Office tab. These are not complete Microsoft Office programs but have all the major features. These are free to use and you do not need to have purchased Microsoft Office. Other potential Office type programs are Open Office and Google Docs. Click on anyone of Figure 2: Live Office the four programs to begin to use it. In Cloud Computing Page 2

3 this example I clicked on Word. You first must provide a name for the document. You can also select who can see the document. You can be the sole worker, select a group of people or make the document public to the world. Figure 3: Starting Word Live Note my document is saved at a location called the SkyDrive which is a virtual location within the Cloud and can be accessed by the user at any location that has an internet connection. You can also connect to the SkyDrive from word on your desktop computer. Figure 4: Word Live Cloud Computing Page 3

4 Connecting SkyDrive from Your Desktop Click on the Windows Live Tab and select SkyDrive. There are two different pieces to the SkyDrive one to store documents and photos and another for synced files. The simplest part of the SkyDrive is the one in which you store documents on like what we did in the Office part above, notice the Word file test2 which we created in the previous example. You can connect to the SkyDrive from your desktop computer and store information directly. 5 Live Mesh Live Mesh is a product that will allow you synchronize information between computers and with a Sync SkyDrive. You will need to download a client for your computer. Go to Note there are several potential downloads that you might like to use. I have used all of these products and they are all solid and very useful tools that you might use. Click on Windows Live Mesh and download and install it. Once it has been installed you can begin to sync computers together. Go back to the Windows Live button and select Devices (these are the items that have been synchronized). You can sync folders between multiple computers you use or with colleagues that you wish to collaborate with. This way all copies of the file are the same. You can also use the sync to automatically backup important information. Thus you can eliminate the need to carry a pen drive between your home and office computer. Note the last icon in this list is the SkyDrive synced storage, which is different than the previously discussed SkyDrive. 6 information with all other computers that sync has been specified to run for the particular folder Figure 8; Sync Device selected. Skype Gives you the ability to communicate live with video chat and includes screen sharing at no cost. You can make it work with only a microphone and speakers but to get full use you need a camera. There are also Skype phones. You will need to download a client to make this work and create an account. My Skype name is: vincedinoto. UStream Is a live internet TV channel which is monodirectional, all you need is a camera and microphone to go online with a broadcast. If using an external video camera it must have a firewire connection, but you can use the web camera on your computer. You can also record your streaming video. There is nothing to download everything is done in the cloud. Once you have created an account, you can begin to broadcast. My Username is Figure 9: UStream Broadcast Vince123. 7 Once I click broadcast it asks which channel I want to use then select Broadcast. Figure 10: Channel Selection You must allow the stream to use the microphone and camera you have connected to your computer, next click Start Broadcast and if you like you can record the broadcast. You may need to configure your microphone and camera connection, if it does not start automatically use the pull downs blow start broadcast. Cloud Computing Page 7

9 SlideShare There are numerous good sites that you can use to share your PowerPoint including Microsoft Live, the one that I have used and really like is called Slideshare. With most of the slide sharing programs you lose some of the transitions that you put into a PowerPoint presentation. Once you create an account you can begin uploading your slides. It does take a few minutes for the conversion to occur. I still create my slides in PowerPoint, but this gives me a way of pulling down any presentation, at any time, in any location that has an internet connection. I have a single web location online place that I can give to participants in workshops and presentations. Many of the free cloud computing sites also have a purchase side. In general I have found the free side able to do everything that I need with most applications. While the free side of Flickr does everything most users will need, I needed more storage space and the ability to load bigger images than the free Cloud Computing Page 9

10 Figure 13: Flickr site would accommodate. Therefore, I joined the pay side and this has become my major photo backup site. Flickr is a Yahoo company and requires a yahoo account to use. There are other free photo sites that are very good. When selecting a photo site, I believe it is important that you can embed images into other processes such as blogs. One the features that I really like and use a lot is the ability to tag the location in which the picture was taken. You can also create groups and collections as well as select three levels of viewing, private, friends and public. Jing Jing is a free screen capture and video capture program, which was used for all the handouts in this document. It is made by the same company that makes Camtasia. It is a tool that I require my students to use and I use in most of my writings. Cloud Computing Page 10
