Chapter 2: Redemption Basics OnSpec Electronic, Inc. Redemption Basics What is a Backup store? What is a Catalog file? What is a Snapshot? Duplicate a volume Archiving the Backup Restoring file(s) Schedule Backup Cancel an operation 5

What is a Backup Store and what does it do? The basic building blocks of Redemption are the Backup store, which is a set of one or more disks, or files. You can back up as many source volumes as you like to a single Backup Store. For example, you could have a single Backup Store as the backup destination for your computer s internal hard disk, your external hard disk. Redemption performs Incremental Backup to optimize space and time. Incremental backup smartly copies only files those are new or have changed since the previous backup to a Backup Store. User does not have to specify whether you want a Full or Incremental backup. Redemption by default, copies all the files it hasn t already backed up. What is a catalog file? Redemption uses a catalog file, an index of the files and folders contained in a Backup Store, to keep track of files and folders, so you never have to think about which files are on which disks Redemption uses a separate catalog file (usually stored on your hard disk) to keep track of the all the files in a Backup Store. The catalog files let you quickly search for files (including older versions of backed up files) without having to actually search the backup drive. The catalog file is an index or table of contents of the files on the backup media of a Backup Store. The Catalog file lets you to view the contents of a Backup Store without any of its medium on hand. If a catalog file is lost or damaged, Redemption can rebuild a catalog file from the drive?... Note: Catalog files cannot be viewed or opened without Redemption. What is a Snapshot? Since Redemption does incremental backups, it may have several versions of a file scattered among several Backup Stores. For example, you may update your Monthly Status Report document every month, and because each update modifies the file, Redemption backs up each one to your Backup Store. A flat list of all versions of all the files in the Backup Store would be very confusing. For this reason among others, every time you back up, Redemption places a snapshot of the source volume in the Backup Store. A Snapshot is a list-you can think of it as a picture-of all files and folders on a volume when it is backed up. For each volume, one snapshot is stored in the Catalog file and a copy of the same Snapshot stored on the backup medium. Following each successful backup or Archive operations, the old catalog files snapshot is replaced but old Snapshot remains untouched and Redemption adds new Snapshots to the medium. When you want to restore from a backup, you can tell Redemption to use a Snapshot to restore the entire contents of a disk. Or, you can use a Snapshot as a guide to see the volumes as it was at a given point in time when it was backed up, picking and choosing individual files to restore. Snapshots allow you to perfectly restore each volume to its exact state at the time of any completed backup. Snapshots help Redemption keep track of the volumes to which a file belongs. When Redemption first backs up a volume to a new Backup Store, it copies the selected files and saves a Snapshot. When it subsequently backs up other volumes, it does not copy identical files already in the Backup Store. You can retrieve snapshots from the drive if you want to restore a volume, folder, or file as it was at any given backup. Because a Snapshot represents a volume at a specific point in time, you cannot use a Snapshot to find multiple versions of a file throughout different backup sessions on different dates. However, Redemption does provide an easy way of doing this. Duplicating a Volume Duplicate copies selected files in their native file format from one drive or folder to another. After a duplicate operation, the destination drive contains an exact copy of every file and folder that was in the source. NOTE: Redemption allows you to duplicate files from one drive to another, or on the same drive from one folder to another. Redemption optimizes the duplication process by copying only those files that do not already exist on the destination. 6

Archiving a Backup Store Archiving lets you copy/move files from a volume to a Backup Store for the storage. This option provides you to verify and delete the files. NOTE: Archive option allows you to delete the files in the source after the Archival operation is finished; By default the source files will not be deleted after the archival process. In case of Backup source files are never deleted. Restoring files Redemption allows you to restore an entire Volume or restore selected files and folders from the most recent backup or any previous backup. Redemption can restore selected files and folders, entire volumes, or just the system state and registry. You can restore either by selecting a snapshot from the Backup Store, or by searching through one or more Backup Stores for files that meet specified criteria. Scheduling a Backup Store The Backup Store creations can be scheduled on daily, weekly, monthly basis. The user just needs to set the date and time to start the process. The Redemption application launches the corresponding process for the date and time specified. The user can then schedule the Backup, Restore and Duplicate process by just setting the date and time. Cancel an Operation Canceling any one operation in the Redemption product may not contain complete set of backup data. CompuApps recommends to user to decide upon the process to select and complete the process. 7

Thus the Synchronization feature in Redemption helps to do the job of Synchronization of data to the local volume(s). The created backup may be from any system; user can select the Redemption backup store from the available resources connected in the system and start the Synchronization process. Why should I synchronize? The user may have the files, which will be updated on regular basis; For Instance: Employees Daily Attendance, Inventory Database, etc. At the end of the every day/week these files may had to be updated to that of the master resources. The user can use the Synchronize feature for updating the older data with that of the modified data. The application smartly searches for the modified files and updates the files. Synchronization Steps for creating a Sync store: - The Welcome to the Redemption Sync Wizard window display, The Sync function allows you to synchronize multiple copies of the same files stored on two or more hard drives. Any changes made to the data stored on one drive will automatically appear on the other drive when you run the Sync operation. Sync is very useful if you routinely work on the same files on more than one computer in different location. For example, you can synchronize the hard drive in your office PC with a portable hard drive that you connect to a PC at home. Because you routinely work from different hard drive, any one of your synched hard drives may contain new or modified files. By Synching the drives, you can make sure the data on all of your drives will be up-to-date and exactly the same. 1. Create a new Sync task: 1. Salvage deleted files (Recommended). Each time you run the Sync function, any files that were deleted from one synched disk will be saved to a folder called CompuApps Redemption Salvaged Data at the root of each synched drive. This feature is a safeguard against the accidental deletion of files. Delete synched files. Any file that is deleted from one synched disk will also be deleted from the other synched disk the next time you run the Sync operation. After selecting any one of the methods and the destination Drive/folder user should click on the Next button to proceed with the process. 25

PushButton Manager The PushButton Manager module allows the user to run any of the Backup/Duplicate/Synchronize process through a single command/single push. PushButton backup feature in the Redemption application helps the user to setup any of the backup option for the first time and run the process with the same settings whenever the button (i.e. button on the PushButton backup drive) is pressed. This reduces the user s time for launching the application and Setting up the process every time. The process continues with the existing settings for the selected device name. 1. Launching the PushButton Backup dialog. The user can launch the wizard in 2 ways, Through command line. Follow these steps to launch the dialog, 1. Go to the Command prompt. 2. Go to the Redemption installed path. (For Example: C:\Program Files\Redemption Backup\All Users\Redemption) 3. Type the following command i.e. Redemption.exe /OTB=1 62

Where the <Application exe name> /<Module Name>=<Device Label> Through OEM s supported drives Most external storage drives support the Redemption application; clicking on the button available in the external disk launches the PushButton Backup wizard. Once the Pushbutton Backup wizard launches from the Redemption application, the user can select any of the Backup, Duplicate or Synchronize process. (Kindly refer the corresponding modules) PushButton Manager (PushButton Backup Wizard) 1. The PushButton Backup Wizard displays the Enter a device name window. This window requires the user to enter a device name to identify your PushButton Drive and Keep track of backups. Unique device names are also useful if you plan to use more than one PushButton Drive on your computer. 63

After entering the Device name click the Next Button to continue. Tip: For the device name, you may find it helpful to simply use the name you assigned to your PushButton Drive during the drive setup process. 64

PushButton Manager (PushButton Backup Wizard) The PushButton Backup Wizard allows the user to select any of Backup/Duplicate/Synchronize process and save the settings in a file name. Backup: The Backup process helps the user to take a backup of files and folders in several ways, such as backup only the modified files, new files or selected types of files and folders from a specified location such as My Documents folder, My Computer folder etc. The backup module also avails the user the provision of encrypting the data before storing it, for the security purpose. Optionally the user can also compress the files for backup to increase the storage disk space. The user can specify the backup name and the destination location that helps them to keep track of multiple backup stores. Duplicate: The Duplicate process makes an exact copy of the data from the selected source drive to destination drive. The data in the destination drive reflects the same as that of the source drive after the duplicate process is been run. As a result a duplicate copy of the data in the source drive is available in the destination drive (I.e. the duplicate module copies the files, folders and applications data from the source to destination). Synchronize: The Synchronize process helps to synchronize multiple copies of the same files stored on two or more hard drives. Any changes made to the data stored on one drive will automatically appear on the other drive when you run the Sync operation. After selecting the Backup type Click the Next button to continue. 65

PushButton Manager The feature allows the user to manage (i.e. Edit / delete) the PushButton backup settings, which are already created by PushButton Backup Wizard. Note: The PushButton Manger will be launched with the existing settings if the user has created any Backup process using PushButton or PushButton command line option. This module allows the user to manage (i.e. Edit / delete) the existing settings. 66

Preference Preference feature helps to manage the over all Redemption application settings. Redemption application supports the following preferences: Start up Date Note: For more information for these files, kindly refer 1. Start Up : Start Redemption on Startup to perform scheduled tasks. Start Redemption on Start up automatically starts Redemption when a scheduled script is waiting to execute. By default, this preference is turned on. If Redemption is started during startup and there is no tasks/schedules are available for next X hours, take following action Stay in Redemption Hibernate Quit Log Off Shutdown Restart 67

2. Date The Date format you select will be used globally throughout the Redemption application. Date Format dd/mm/yyyy mm/dd/yyyy 68
