7 Introduction The new Fire Weather System (FWSYS) is composed of several components: Data Feed Data Processing and Archiving Products Generation Access Delivery The EcoConnect Client Application (called FWSYS from now on and part of the access delivery component), is the main software that will allow the Principal Rural Fire Officer (PRFO) and other staff to access all the observed and forecast information they require to do their day-to-day job. 8 This document is set out in sections, starting with the installation of the software and the login process. The following sections explain how to access the different modules that are available. 9 Installation Firstly, the FWSYS software needs to be installed on your computer. Please make sure your computer has all the requirements listed below. Requirements Operating system supported Microsoft Windows XP (Service Pack 2 or later) and the.net Framework 4.0 Windows Vista Windows 7 and 8 Screen resolution FWSYS is best viewed on a screen with a resolution of at least 1024x768 pixels, a resolution of 1280x1024 pixels or better is recommended. Minimum computer properties 2 GHz processor or faster 1 GB ram or more A DirectX 9 or 10 capable graphics card for the graphical rendering of the application Download and installation The most recent software can be downloaded from either of: ftp://ftp.niwa.co.nz/incoming/fwsys Save it to your computer. Run the installer by double clicking on the downloaded file. FWSYS - User Guide - Version

10 Once the software has been installed, an icon will appear on your desktop like this: FWSYS - User Guide - Version

11 Login To use the FWSYS software, you will need a username and password. If you have not been assigned one yet, please contact the National Rural Fire Authority (NRFA) to have one set up. Starting the software Double click on the FWSYS icon on your desktop. This will take you to the following the login window: Enter your username and password and click on the login button. 12 This will take you to the following Welcome window: If you entered the wrong username or password, you will get a message like this: FWSYS - User Guide - Version

13 Forgot Password If you forgot your password, click on the Advanced Options and select I forgot my password link. It will ask you to enter your username used for the registration and click on the Request new password link A new password will be sent to your address. You can change that password once you are logged in. FWSYS - User Guide - Version

14 If you forgot your username, then you will need to contact the NRFA. Welcome page From this page you can access the default catalogue or any workspace you might have saved in the past. Catalogue Click on the New catalogue icon. This will bring up the main product access window as follows: FWSYS - User Guide - Version

15 Main window The three main panels we will be referring to in this User Guide document are: - Product explorer o Lists all the catalogues of data available to the user. The product explorer shows only the categories and how the products have been organised. o To expand a category, you need to click on the arrow to the left of the folder. - Product list o Once you have reached a category that does not have an expanding arrow anymore, click on the name of the category and a list of products will show in the product list panel. - Product viewer o By clicking on a product listed in the product list panel, it will expand and give you a series of choices, depending on the product. More info Will open a stand-alone window with metadata about the product. Open table (for site-specific products) Will open in the product viewer panel. Open chart (for site-specific products) Will open in the product viewer panel. Open in image viewer Will open in the product viewer panel. 16 Product explorer The product explorer is the main method to access your products. It contains a structured catalogue of all the products accessible by your username. Product explorer You can expand any of the folders listed in the catalogue by a single right mouse click on the name of the folder. If you click on FWSYS folder and then expand the National, North Island and South Island folders, you should see something similar to this: To reach a viewable product, you need to continue expanding the folders, until they do not have the left arrow (or a plus sign) beside them. 17 If you click on a folder that does not have a left arrow, it will show a list of products in the product list panel. Catalogue refresh Once in a while we will be adding new products to the FWSYS catalogue. Since a local copy of the catalogue is saved on the user s computer, it will need to be refreshed when updates are made. Users will be informed via an when their catalogue needs to be refreshed. To download the updated catalogue, click on the refresh button in the lower right hand corner of the product explorer panel. FWSYS - User Guide - Version

18 Graph viewer The graph viewer allows the user to view individual or combined parameters as a time series. By default, the observed fire indices graph will display observed daily values for the past 7 days. The daily 2-day forecast will show 2 values and the daily 6-day forecast will display 6 values. For weather information, the observed graph will show the past 2 days at hourly intervals, while the 2- day forecast will show the next 48 hours at hourly intervals and the 6-day forecast (the next 144 hours) at 3-hourly intervals. Graph To view a graph, you need to have it listed in the product list panel. Once you have products listed, just click on the name of the product and this will give you three choices: o More info o Open table o Open graph To view the graph, click on the open graph option. 19 If you move the cursor over a data point, it will reveal the values at that point. Tool area All graphs have a toolbar area located at the bottom centre of the graph. Move your cursor over the area and it will appear. FWSYS - User Guide - Version

20 Graph to table Click on the table icon in the toolbar area. This will replace the graph with a table showing all the individual values. c To go back to the graph, click on the graph icon in the toolbar area as indicated above. FWSYS - User Guide - Version

21 Modify date range forecast graph Move the cursor over the toolbar area to show the toolbar. Click on the change date range icon. This will bring up the date change interface as follows: Click on the calendar icon and it will bring up the date selector. FWSYS - User Guide - Version

22 Select a date from the calendar - this will bring up a list of available forecasts for the selected date. You can also change the number of days around the selected date to obtain more forecast choices. Select a forecast analysis time from the list and click the apply button. This will update the graph with the selected date. FWSYS - User Guide - Version

23 Modify date range observed graph For observed products, the date change selector offers more possibilities. Move your cursor over the toolbar area and then click on the change date range icon. Select a start date and an end date and click on the apply button. This will bring up the updated graph with the selected dates. FWSYS - User Guide - Version

25 Modify plot and axis properties Move the cursor over the axis you wish to modify. The axis tools button will appear. Click on this button. This will open an edit axis settings window as follows: FWSYS - User Guide - Version

26 Reset to default Move the cursor over the toolbar area to show the toolbar. Click on the refresh button. This will bring back the most recent graph with the default date range. FWSYS - User Guide - Version

27 Table viewer The table viewer allows the user to view the time series data in a tabular format. By default, it displays daily observed values for the past 7 days, 2 days for the 2-day daily forecast and 6 days for the 6-day forecast. Table Select a site-specific category from the product explorer panel. Select a product from the product list panel. 28 This will bring up a table in the product viewer panel. Export table data From the toolbar area, you can download the data as a spreadsheet by clicking on the download icon. FWSYS - User Guide - Version

29 From the export data window, select the file name and location by clicking on the icon. Then click on the export now button and a CSV file will be saved. Table to graph From the toolbar area, click on the graph icon. FWSYS - User Guide - Version

30 This will replace the table with the equivalent graph. To go back to the table, click on the table icon in the toolbar area. FWSYS - User Guide - Version

31 Modify date range forecast table Click on the change date range icon in the toolbar area. This will bring up the change date selector window. Select a date. FWSYS - User Guide - Version

32 You can also select plus or minus several days around a date. You then need to select a forecast for the selected range of dates and click the apply button. FWSYS - User Guide - Version

33 This will bring up a new forecast table with data for the selected date. FWSYS - User Guide - Version

34 Modify date range observed table Click on the change date range icon in the toolbar area. This will bring up the change date selector window. Select a start date and an end date and click the apply button. FWSYS - User Guide - Version

36 Reset to default Move the cursor over the toolbar area. Click on the refresh button. This will bring back the most recent table with the default date range. FWSYS - User Guide - Version

37 Image viewer Summary The image viewer will display up to 8 images for the daily observed products, 2 images for 2-day daily forecast and 6 images for the 6-day daily forecast. For weather forecast images it will display the next 48 hours at hourly intervals for the 2-day forecast and for the next 6 days at 3 hourly intervals for the 6-day forecast. Image Click on the national folder in the product explorer. Select fire indices and codes. Click on the observed folder. This will bring up a list of image products in the product list panel. 38 Select a product and click on the open in image viewer option. This will show a series of thumbnails in the product viewer panel. Click on any of the thumbnails and it will bring up that image in the product viewer panel. FWSYS - User Guide - Version

39 Moving the cursor over the dates and times in the left hand panel will show the corresponding image in the viewer. Move your cursor near the bottom of the image and the toolbar area will appear. FWSYS - User Guide - Version

40 Animation Click on the animation icon in the toolbar area (second from the right). You can stop the animation by clicking on the same animation icon. The speed of the animation can be changed using by dragging the speed bar beside the animation icon from left or right. FWSYS - User Guide - Version

41 If you want to remove some images from the animation, stop the animation and then click on the thumbnails icon in the toolbar area. Unselect the images you want removed by clicking on the tick mark in the top left hand corner of each thumbnail. Then click on a thumbnail and start the animation again by clicking on the animation icon. The images you deselected will not be part of the animation. FWSYS - User Guide - Version

42 Zooming You can zoom in and out by clicking on the zoom in (+) or zoom out (-) icon on the toolbar. You can also use the scroll button on the mouse to zoom in and out. Zooming can also be used while an image is in animation mode. You can reset the image size ratio to 1:1 by clicking on the 1:1 icon. You can also force the image to occupy all the space available by clicking on the fit to available screen icon. FWSYS - User Guide - Version

43 Downloading images From an image being displayed in the product viewer panel, click on the download icon in the toolbar area. You can save the currently displayed image or all images listed for the selected time range to the clipboard, in a single PDF document or as individual PNG image file. FWSYS - User Guide - Version

44 Click on the icon to select the folder where you want to save the images. If you want the images to go to the clipboard, you do not need to select the download folder. It will not ask you for a file name, but use the default name for the image(s). Select the folder, then click the OK button. To finish, select the type of download you want. Files will be saved using your selected method and folder. The click on the close button. FWSYS - User Guide - Version

45 National and Regional Data Table National Observed Data Table The observed data table displays all the same elements as seen on the NRFA website. It is updated once a day with 00 UTC data (12:00 NZST or 13:00 NZDT). To view the table, select the National Stations Summary category in the catalogue. Click on the product called: o NRFA National Daily Observed Data Summary Table o then click on open in table viewer. FWSYS - User Guide - Version

46 Regional Observed Data Table The regional observed data table is available under North or South Island Stations category. Select a region and then click on the product called: o NRFA Regional Daily Observed Summary Table for Region name o then click on open in table viewer. FWSYS - User Guide - Version

47 Forecast Data Tables The forecast data tables are issued after the 6-day weather forecast has completed and available for the 00 UTC (12:00 NZST or 13:00 NZDT analysis model time). The 2-day and 6-day forecast tables are available at the same time. To view the forecast table, select the National Stations Summary category in the catalogue. Click on the product called: o NRFA National Daily 2-Day Forecast Summary Table o or o NRFA National Daily 6-Day Forecast Summary Table o then click on open in table viewer. 48 This will open the forecast data table for the first day of the forecast. To view the other days in the forecast, select the day from the drop down selector at the top of the table. The same process applies for the Regional data tables under the North and South Island Stations categories. FWSYS - User Guide - Version

49 Change table date You can view the table for past dates by moving your cursor along the bottom of the table to show the toolbar area. Select the calendar icon. This will bring up the calendar. Only the dates with data will be available. Select a date and click on the OK button. FWSYS - User Guide - Version

50 The table with the new dates will now show. To get back to the most recent table available, click on the refresh button in the toolbar area. FWSYS - User Guide - Version

51 Search The search facility allows you the find any products you are allowed to view under your account settings. You can search by: Location type (station or area) Location (station name or geographical name) Source (forecast or observation) Type (any, image, simple or composite data product) Keywords Searching Click on the search tab. Try different combinations of searches to find products you are interested in and note how it works for you. When you have made your selection, click on the find option. If you select a product from the product list panel, it will appear in the product viewer panel as shown in the previous sections. If you want to try a new search (i.e., reset the search criteria), click on the new search option. FWSYS - User Guide - Version

52 If more than one station appears on the map, you can click on the station location and that will filter the list of products appearing in the product list panel to just that station. FWSYS - User Guide - Version

53 Alerting system The alerting system has two core components: The alert manager o For the creation and management of alerts. My alerts o For a list of active alerts. The alert definitions manager is available to users who have the manage alerts privilege set on their account and allows users to create and manage alerts. My alerts is available to all users via the welcome screen and via the alerts menu. It allows users to see any alert notifications that have been sent to them. FWSYS - User Guide - Version

54 Alerts manager Click on the alert menu tab. Select definitions from the alerts menu. The alerts manager tool will open in a new window. Click the add alert button. FWSYS - User Guide - Version

55 General tab The alert definition manager tool will open. The general tab includes: o Alert name (required) o Description (optional) o Enable alert (optional) If not enabled, it will be saved for future use. If enabled, some conditions and a default action will need to be set up. o Suppression time (optional) This is to let the alerting system know that after a first trigger of the defined alert, you do not want to receive any more alerts for the duration of time you enter. This is practical for observations that can come as often as every 10 minutes. It can also be used for forecast products where it will not verify any subsequent forecast for the duration of the suppression time. o Event timeout (optional) Alerts are shown in the active list for as long as needed. This will let the alerting system know that after the amount of time entered, you want the alert to be removed from the list of active alerts. The alerts will still remain enabled until the conditions are met again. If left as 0 it will default to 2 days. o Enabled escalation (optional) If you want the alert to be acknowledged, this is a way of ensuring that if it has not been acknowledged another alert will be sent using the action defined in the escalation action tab. 56 Conditions tab Select the conditions tab Click the Add condition button. The Alert definition editor will open. FWSYS - User Guide - Version

57 Specify the condition type (required) o Value above threshold E.g., Air temperature above 30 C o Value below threshold E.g., Relative humidity below 20% o Value accumulation above threshold E.g., Rain over 6 hours more than 100 mm o Value accumulation below threshold E.g., Rain over 24 hour less than 10 mm Condition name (required) Description (optional) Product to monitor (required) o Click on the icon. This will open the search and find the product you want to use for the alert. o Then click on a product name listed in the product list panel. Then click on the select this product option. 58 Condition true (required) o You need to select a product to monitor before filling in this section. o If you selected value above or below threshold then you need to select: Magnitude exceeds/falls below a number and select the units. o If you selected accumulation below or above a certain threshold then you need to select: The sum of values is greater/below than a number and the units. o You can also select for how long you want that condition to exist. E.g., Above 30 degrees for 3 hours (180 minutes). E.g., Rain accumulated for 6 hours (360 minutes). If left as 0 (default), it will not use that feature. Click the apply button. The condition is then added to the alert specification. FWSYS - User Guide - Version

59 You can add more conditions to the same alert by clicking on the add condition button. If you have more than one condition listed, you can select an option for when the alert will be triggered by selecting: o All conditions are true (default). o Any condition is true. 60 Default action tab Select the default action tab. Click on add recipient. Enter the required information: o Recipient name (required) o Allow this recipient to receive alert notification (optional) If not selected, the user will not receive any alerts but this will be saved o o o o for future use. Allow this recipient to acknowledge and cancel alerts (optional) The recipient will be able to manage the alerts even if it was created by another user. The user needs to be a registered user and listed in the EcoConnect username box (last section). Send via (optional) If not selected, the user will not receive alerts. If selected, a valid needs to be entered in the address text box. Send via SMS (optional) If not selected, the user will not receive a SMS alert. If selected, a valid mobile phone number needs to be entered in the mobile number text box (e.g ) User has an EcoConnect account and should receive notifications via the service (optional) If not selected, the user will not be able to view the alerts in his/her account. If selected, the user will be able to view and possibly manage the alerts if the user creating the alerts allows it (first section). FWSYS - User Guide - Version

61 Once all fields are filled in, click on the apply button. The recipient will then be listed in the default action tab. Additional recipients needing the same alert can be added by clicking on the add recipient button. If escalation has been enabled, then the escalation action tab will be accessible and the same process as the default action can be followed. FWSYS - User Guide - Version

62 Message format tab Select the message format tab. Fill in the SMS and/or the message fields (required). o If you selected SMS or to be sent to a recipient and do not fill a SMS or message, nothing will be received by the recipient. Tick include product data for alert. o This will include the values that have triggered the alert. Click the save button. The alert definition is now complete. FWSYS - User Guide - Version

63 Editing alerts/conditions/recipients/message format Any alert components that has been saved can be edited or removed. Just enter or modify the information and click on the apply button. FWSYS - User Guide - Version

64 My alerts My alerts allows you to view which alerts are active or have been triggered. Click on the alerts tab in the top menu. Select the my alerts option. FWSYS - User Guide - Version

65 Click on the title of the alert and it will show the options available. If you created the alert or another user allowed you to acknowledge the alert, you can click on the acknowledge button. This will prevent the escalation being triggered if it has been set up. To view more details about the alert click on the view detail link. From the view alert window you can also click on the acknowledge button. This will also prevent the escalation being triggered if it has been set up. 66 Workspace management A workspace shows what products you have open and where they are located within your display. A workspace can be saved and viewed later. Once you have logged out and log in again, a saved workspace will be available on your welcome page. Multiple workspaces can be saved. FWSYS - User Guide - Version

67 Saving a workspace If you are not currently using a saved workspace, you can just start opening products you want to be part of the workspace in the viewer panel. Click on the workspace tab in the top menu. Select the save option. Do not select new as this will remove all the products you have opened if you do not save them. If you were already in another workspace, then select new instead to remove the already opened products so you can start from the beginning. This will bring up the save workspace window. Enter a name and click the save button. FWSYS - User Guide - Version

68 Switching to another saved workspace Click on the workspace tab in the top menu. Select the open option. If you have made any changes, you will be asked if you want to save the current layout. o If a product is updated or refreshed, it will assume the layout has changed o Select yes so you do not lose your changes. A list of workspaces (with the current one highlighted) will be presented in a window. Click on the save button. FWSYS - User Guide - Version

69 You will then be asked to confirm your changes. Click on the yes button. The open workspace window should now be visible. Select the workspace you want to open, then click the open button. This will bring up the workspace you selected. FWSYS - User Guide - Version

70 Deleting a workspace Click on the workspace tab in the top menu. Select the Delete option. This will bring you a list of available workspace. Select one and click on the Delete button. FWSYS - User Guide - Version

71 Closing a workspace If you want to completely close a workspace without loging out of the software, select the Workspace at the top of the menu bar. Select the Close option. This may ask you if you want to save the current workspace. It will always ask you that question if you made any modification to the layout or a product got updated. Just select No if you have not made any modifications. It will then bring you back to the Welcome page. FWSYS - User Guide - Version

72 Grass curing tool Grass curing can only be entered by a few designated FWSYS users. The grass curing option in the top menu will only appear for these users. Grass curing From the top menu entry click on the fire weather tab and select the grass curing option. This will bring up the station selector. FWSYS - User Guide - Version

73 Select a station. This will bring up the grass curing data window showing you the most recent value that has been entered. Enter a new value and then click on the save value button. FWSYS - User Guide - Version

74 Click on the OK button. Please note: For the new value to be used for the current day calculation, it should be entered before 12:00 NZST (13:00 NZDT). FWSYS - User Guide - Version

75 Windows common features All windows that are opened have the following features: They can be opened as a stand-alone window. Anchor within the product viewer panel. They can be resized. FWSYS - User Guide - Version

76 Multiple windows Open four products. Click on the down arrow at the end of the tab bar to view if the four products that have been loaded. From the tab where the name of the products appears, left click on the first product and hold. Start dragging the product until you see the centre location selector. While still holding the left mouse button down over the title of the product, move the cursor over the top locator (using the centre location selector i.e., in the larger red circle in the screenshot above). You also have a choice of selecting the left, right, top and bottom locator (i.e., the smaller red circles in the screenshot above). FWSYS - User Guide - Version

77 When highlighted, release the mouse button. Do the same for the remaining windows until you have them arranged with one window per corner. The window locator becomes visible while you move the cursor over an existing window. If no other windows are available and it is the first one you are placing, the locator will appear in the middle of the product viewer panel. FWSYS - User Guide - Version

78 Any window in the product viewer panel can be resized. Move the cursor over the dark border of a product until the double arrow appears. Click with the left mouse button and hold, then move up or down or left or right to resize the product window. FWSYS - User Guide - Version

79 Stand-alone window Any product that is already opened can be sectioned off as a stand-alone window. Left mouse click on the title bar at the top of a product, and then hold and drag the window to where you want to locate it on your desktop. That window can then be moved anywhere on the desktop, resized, closed etc. FWSYS - User Guide - Version

80 Product explorer By default, the product explorer is docked on the left hand side of the client application. The product explorer can actually be moved to different locations. Click on the down arrow in the top right hand corner of the product explorer window and select the float option. FWSYS - User Guide - Version

81 Auto hide Click on the auto hide icon (pin) on the top right hand corner of the product explorer window. This will hide the product explorer window and leave a vertical tab. FWSYS - User Guide - Version

82 To get the product explorer back, just move the cursor over the vertical tab and it will appear again. To stop the product explorer from auto-hiding, just click on the pin icon again. The same step can be done by clicking on the view tab on the top menu and selecting the product explorer option. FWSYS - User Guide - Version

83 Float This will become a stand-alone window that you can move anywhere on your desktop. To dock it again to its original place, right click with your mouse on the top bar and select the show option. FWSYS - User Guide - Version

85 Help The help entry on the top menu bar gives you the following options: Change Password o Allows the user to change their password Help and Resources o Brings you to a web page with several resources including a full user guide and training video.
