1 License Queries 1. Do I need separate client and server License File? With the new version of QualNet 5.X, NCS updated the licensing mechanism. This means that the old QualNet 4.X license will not work with QualNet 5.X and vice versa. The floating license issued for QualNet 4.X requires 2 license files: 1. The floating server license file: qualnet-commercial-floating-<id>-<expiration date>.lic 2. The floating client license file: client-<ip address>.lic The floating server license file is placed on the server that is running qlm and the floating client license file is to be distributed to the end users. The floating client license file should be copied in QUALNET_HOME/license_dir directory. For QualNet 5.X the system is different. In the case for floating license we only require 1 license file: 1. The floating license file: qualnet-commercial-floating-<timestamp>.lic The user needs to distribute this file to all the end users and also place the same file on the license server. With the new system we do not need 2 separate license files. We use the same license file as the client and server license files. 2. Where can I get my license file? Reason: To get access to the product Once software is purchased, NCS will provide a user account for the license web portal. Using the account the user has access to generate a license, maintain the license and even modify the license. Can contact support@ncs-in.com that helps on how to generate and modify the licenses.

2 3. How to resolve "Can not connect" issue? If you are running a license server and your local machine is giving an error that it cannot connect to server, use the following steps to troubleshoot: 1. Ensure that you are able to ping the license server. 2. If ping is working, the issue is likely due to the ports being blocked. This can be caused by SE Linux or by Firewall and ports would need to be unblocked by both. 4. I can run QualNet from the command-line, but when I run QualNet Developer (GUI) from desktop, I get the error 'No valid license found'. The GUI needs the correct active license to be in QUALNET_HOME/license_dir. The Simulator on the other hand can search the license path, including previous installations of QualNet, to find a valid license. This error usually comes up when you have installed two versions of QualNet on the same computer. 5. What is the maximum duration of a license? NCS issues perpetual licenses for its products. These licenses do not expire. The customer has the option each year when the annual maintenance is up for renewal to renew their maintenance for another year which means they are eligible of new version updates and technical support. About 30 days before license expiration we send reminders for maintenance renewal. As the versions get older we drop total support for the versions. Should the customer at a later date want to renew the maintenance they must pay for all unpaid periods of maintenance and become current to qualify.

3 6. GUI License Issue: Cannot start IDE? The GUI needs the correct active license to be in QUALNET_HOME\license_dir. The Simulator on the other hand can search the license path, including previous installations of QualNet, to find a valid license. This error will usually come up if the user has two versions of QualNet installed. 7. What information do I need to provide to get a license file? NCS needs to know what type of license does the user want: Node-locked License Floating License Dongle License Depending on the user requirement information like System MAC ID, System IP address, organization details etc will be requested to provide. 8. What if I get an invalid or inconsistent license key [FLEXnet Licensing error: -8,544] or host error and cannot run QualNet / Exata? Please check to ensure that your license file has the correct host id/mac address. Issue can be caused by virtual machine client. Make sure Ethernet 0 is the actual interface of the machine.

4 9. I am getting a license error. What should I do? Please verify that you have taken all of the steps outlined in the QualNet installation guides (available on the QualNet download page) and the License server instructions. The checklist below will help identify some common license issues. QualNet (client) checklist: 1. QUALNET_HOME environment variable is set to the QualNet installation path. 2. Client-<server-IP>.lic exists in QUALNET_HOME/license_dir. 3. IP address specified in *.lic matches the license server's IP address. 4. License server is available over the network. (ping IP address) 5. Local IP address is on the subnet specified on the license server. (see item 3 below) License server checklist: 1. License server is running an "lmgrd" process. o Linux/Solaris: 'ps -ef grep lmgrd' o Windows: open Task Manager and look for lmgrd.exe 2. License file exists in the QLM installation path. o Linux/Solaris: usually /usr/qlm o Windows: c:\qlm 3. License file contains correct IP address ranges o Example: HOSTID="INTERNET= * INTERNET= *" 4. There are no errors in the license server log file. The file is located in the installation directory and can be viewed with a text editor. o Linux/Solaris: lmgrd.log o Windows: lmgrdlog.txt

5 10. How do I manage multiple flexlm licenses from different vendors/companies? If you are using multiple FLEX enabled products, you would need to take a few additional steps to prevent conflict between a QualNet license and that from another vendor/company/product. The following are details on three possible approaches to prevent any potential conflict between QualNet and another FLEX enabled product. The first and the easiest approach is to use multiple servers, each with one lmgrd process and a single license file. These way products from all vendors will be on different machines and there will be no conflict. If you do not have or prefer not to use different license server machines, you can use a single machine with each vendors associated license file served by its own lmgrd process. When using this scheme you need to ensure there is no port number clash between each vendor. The third option is to use one server machine with one lmgrd process and multiple license files. This requires all license files to be in the same directory. If you would like more information on advantages and disadvantages of each of these options, please refer to Macrovision FlexNet Licensing Guide. 11. My machine has multiple MAC addresses (host ids). Which one should I provide when registering my license server? For Windows, it will check against all of the interfaces. Under UNIX, the licensing component of QualNet and the license server will check against the first MAC address reported by the system.

6 12. Which ports does the license server use and how can I specify a specific port for the daemon? By default, the FlexLM server uses ports through 27009, and another random port for the QualNet licensing daemon (parsec). To designate a specific port for the daemon, you need to add port=<port_number> at the end of the "VENDOR parsec " line, like this: SERVER c65f1313 VENDOR parsec port= OR SERVER c65f1313 VENDOR parsec port= How do I determine my License Server's hostid? This is usually the computer's first (ethernet0) MAC address. To obtain MAC address For Windows: run "ipconfig /all" from a command prompt You can also get it from "Network Connections" by double clicking on "Local Area Connection", clicking the "Support" tab, and clicking "Details". For Linux: run"/sbin/ifconfig eth0" and look for the "HWaddr" value. For Solaris: you can just run the "hostid" command.

7 14. Why am I unable to checkout floating license if EXata Virtual Ethernet Adapter is enabled? If you are unable to checkout floating license when EXata Virtual Ethernet Adapter is enabled, we recommend the following work around: Before starting EXata, disable the EXata virtual network adapter by right clicking it in Network Connections and selecting disable. o Start EXata. o After EXata is running, enable the EXata virtual network adapter by right clicking it in Network Connections and selecting enable.
