New Features MapMarker Plus 14.0 includes a new Address Dictionary (July 2008 data vintage), as described in the Address Dictionary Update section. Following is a summary of the new features that were introduced with the MapMarker Plus Plus 14,0 software release. Address Dictionary Update The MapMarker Plus 14.0 Address Dictionary has been updated with the data generated from the following sources: Address data from the USPS ZIP + 4 database (vintage July 2008) Street geometry from Tele-Atlas, Inc. Dynamap 2000 Street Network Files (vintage July 2008) ZIP + 4 Centroids from Tele Atlas, Inc. Dynamap /ZIP + 4 Centroids (vintage July 2008, USPS currentness) The Address Dictionary is updated quarterly to comply with USPS CASS standardization requirements. The CASS expiration date for MapMarker Plus 14.0 is October 28, For MapMarker Plus 14.0, the total size of the Address Dictionary files for all states plus Puerto Rico Is approximately 3.29 GB. DPV and LACS Link Performance Optimization There are new system preferences to optimize performance when you are geocoding with DPV address validation and LACS Link address standardization. The CASS Optimizations tab on the System Preferences dialog provides access to these preferences. See the Specialized Geocoding Features chapter in the MapMarker Plus User Guide. Table Attribution Features and Usability Enhancements MapMarker Plus already has the ability to add information from one table to another, either before, during, or after the geocoding process. The Desktop Application Geocode dialog now provides access to an Attribution Wizard that greatly simplifies the process of adding attributes from one table to another. There are other graphical interface and usability improvements to make the table attribution feature much easier to access and use. See the topic Table Attribution with MapMarker in the MapMarker Plus User Guide. Support for CSV and Delimited Text Files The MapMarker Plus 14.0 Desktop Application can now open CSV or other delimited text files. The Desktop Application interface includes a Text File Wizard and other enhancements to support this feature. There are known limitations when geocoding delimited text files from a command line batch process. See Geocoding Text Files in Batch on page 7 for a description of this issue. Defined Match Levels You can use defined match levels to simplify the selection of geocoding match preferences. The defined match levels are: Relaxed, Exact, and Default. These defined match levels can give you the match precision that you need without the granular control that you have with Custom Match Restrictions. You can also implement CASS matching options from the Geocoding dialog. See the topic Match Settings Dialog in Chapter 3 (Geocoding with MapMarker) in the MapMarker Plus User Guide. MapMarker Plus 14.0 Release Notes 2
Quick Find Enhancements The results of a Quick Find are now displayed in a list control that provides more information on the returned candidates. For example, you will see icons that indicate whether a candidate is a close match. You can also copy information (such as x, y coordinates) to the clipboard and paste that into other applications, such as MapInfo Professional. See the topic on Finding a Single Address with Quick Find in Chapter 6 (Specialized Geocoding Features) in the MapMarker Plus User Guide. Saving and Using Project Files MapMarker Plus 14.0 allows you to create a MapMarker project file to preserve all current geocoding settings, matching and fallback preferences, table attributes settings, and system preferences. When you subsequently open the project, settings and preferences are restored. Project settings supersede any settings in the associated TAB file. A project also allows you to preserve settings and preferences from a text input file (for example, a CSV delimited file). You can create multiple projects based on the same TAB or text input file. By creating unique projects based on the same input data, you can design, preserve, and manage multiple geocoding strategies customized to suit your needs. See the topic on Creating and Saving a Project in Chapter 3 (Geocoding with MapMarker) in the MapMarker Plus User Guide. Operating Requirements This section describes the software and hardware requirements for running MapMarker Plus Operating Systems MapMarker runs on the following operating systems: Java API Windows 2000 Advanced Server with SP4 Windows XP Professional with SP2 or SP3 Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition Windows Vista Ultimate Edition Solaris 2.9, 2.10 HP-UX 11.0 Red Hat Linux kernel version 2.6 SUSE Linux 9x C API Windows 2000 with SP 4 Windows XP Professional with SP2 or SP3 Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition Solaris 2.9, 2.10 HP-UX 11.0 Desktop Application Windows 2000 with SP4 Windows XP Professional with SP2 Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition Windows Vista Ultimate Edition MapMarker Plus 14.0 Release Notes 3
Java Virtual Machine MapMarker requires a Java Virtual Machine (JVM) to run. The following JVMs are supported: JVM v or higher MapMarker Plus 14.0 ships with: Sun JRE v _09 (for Microsoft Windows and Sun Solaris) HP JRE _04 (for HP-UX) Sun JRE 1.5.0_11 (for Linux) During the installation, you have the option of installing the JVM that ships with MapMarker or using one that you already have installed on your computer. Under high loads, MapMarker server may experience performance degradation with JVM v _04 or earlier. For this reason, we recommend that you use JVM 1.5.0_05 or later when high server performance is required. Database Support The Jet 4.0 package and the Microsoft Data Access Components 2.8 package together comprise a number of ODBC drivers for use with MapMarker. The Jet 4.0 database engine is required for using MapMarker with Microsoft Access. The MDAC 2.8 package is required to use MapMarker with a SQL database. These components are installed automatically when you install the MapMarker Desktop Application. The following ODBC databases and drivers are supported. In some cases, you must download and install the appropriate driver that suits your needs. SQL Server 2005 SQL Server 2000 Microsoft Access 2007 (Link to download: driver for Microsoft Access 2007) Microsoft Access 2000 MapMarker also supports the following Oracle drivers. 5 Note: You cannot install the same major version of MapMarker Plus Plus USA and the standard version of MapMarker Plus on the same workstation. However, you could install different major versions of MapMarker Plus Plus and standard. For example, MapMarker Plus 13 standard version could coexist with MapMarker Plus Minimum Hardware and Memory Requirements The minimum system requirements for MapMarker on a full installation of the Desktop Application and Developer Product (SDK) are: 800 Mhz Pentium processor or equivalent 1 GB RAM 5 GB available disk space (including approximately 4GB for entire U.S. Address Dictionary) More specifically, the disk space requirements are as follows: 3.36 GB for the Address Dictionary 1 GB for DPV and LACS Link data 0.5 GB for DPV data (available with MapMarker Plus) 25 MB for the MapMarker software (100 MB if installed on a shared installation client since the JRE must also be installed) 100 MB for the JRE 20 MB for Tomcat web server 13 MB for the MapMarker SDK (with the Developer Product) Recommended Hardware and Memory Requirements For optimal performance of a full installation of both the Desktop Application and Developer Product (SDK) we recommend: 2.5 Ghz processor 2 GB RAM 10 GB available disk space Changes with MapMarker Plus 14.0 Following are behavioral changes and other improvements that you will see with MapMarker Plus Generating reports, log files, and updating tables. On Windows Vista systems with UAC enabled., users might not be able to write to the default Programs folder. In that case, users could not generate reports, log files, or update tables when using Windows Vista. To solve this problem, we have changed to default location where log files, error files, CASS reports, project files, and TAB files are created. These files are now written to the user s \My Documents\MapMarker USA folder by default. This is an area where the user always has write permissions. This is related to Incident T Implementing CASS mode using Java API. The preferred way to implement CASS mode now uses the setmatchmode method and the CASS_MODE constant. For example: geocon.setmatchmode(usa_geocodeconstraints.cass_mode); In USA_GeocodeContraints, the setcassmode method has been deprecated, but is still supported. MapMarker Plus 14.0 Release Notes 5
Fixes to Customer-Reported Issues We have worked to address problems and bugs that have been reported by customers. Following is a list of customer-reported incidents that have been addressed in MapMarker Plus The Incident Numbers are used by Pitney Bowes MapInfo to track these customer issues. In some cases, the description is a consolidation of several related incidents. All of these items have been fixed in MapMarker Plus Improved geocoding for addresses in Puerto Rico: In some cases, Puerto Rican addresses were not properly geocoded or the best close matches were not returned. This was often related to street types, house numbers, unit types, and other unique aspects of Puerto Rican addresses. Approximately 25 different incidents were fixed as part of this effort. T17363: Several method and summary descriptions are missing from the JavaDocs. These descriptions have been added. T21991: In the USA_UserInputAddress class, the setcensusblock() method has no effect. This is an obsolete method and therefore should not be used. This method has been removed from the JavaDocs. T25154: Some addresses that contain Spanish word components are not returned correctly. Corrections were made in version 13.2, but there are still some errors. For example, an address like Corte La Paz is returned as Corte Lane Paz (Lane instead of La). T25391: For automatic geocoding, there are problems geocoding addresses that have a house number, directional, and a numbered street name with street type. For example, an address like 125 SE 166 Hibernia Ln. will geocode if the input matches this exactly, but will fail if the input is 125 SE 166th Hibernia Ln. This has been fixed and automatic geocoding is now successful with minor variations in input. T23110: Can t write to a log file due to permissions in Microsoft Vista. Log files are now written to the MapMarker USA folder under the user s defined documents area ($UserDocumentFolder/MapMarker USA) This is an area that the user will always be able to access. T23700: On Solaris or HP systems, if a non-administrator is installing using su or sudo access, the installation is actually performed as "root". In that case, the intended user will not automatically have access, since the files installed will have their owner attribute set to "root". See UNIX / Linux-Related Issues on page 8. T25329: An input address like 723 Rollingbrook (without a street type) returns two seemingly identical close matches. One is 723 Rollingbrook St. and the other is 723 Rollingbrook Dr. This has been fixed, and the one close match is now returned. T25363: Sample Java code in MapMarker Plus Developer Guide is incorrect. Corrections have been made in the Java API chapter of the MapMarker Plus Developer Guide. The following line has been removed: //CandidateAddress candaddr = geores.candidateat(i); Also, the following line has been removed //USA_UserCandidateAddress canaddr = null; and replaced by: USA_UserCandidateAddress usacand = new USA_UserCandidateAddress(geoRes.candidateAt(i)); T25391: When using a User Dictionary, automatic geocoding fails with addresses that have a house number, directional, and street name that includes a number. For example, an address like: 125 SE 166th Hibernia Ln fails to geocode in Automatic mode. If the th is omitted, the address does geocode. This has been fixed and this type of address will now geocode correctly. T26267: An address like PO BOX San Francisco, CA returns an incorrect ZIP + 4 result. The dash in the PO Box input causes the problem. This has been fixed. Known Issues and Clarifications This section provides information and workarounds related to several known issues. This also includes issues specifically related to Windows Vista and UNIX/Linux platforms. Geocoding Text Files in Batch Geocoding Text Files Interactively Project File Created from Delimited Text File MapMarker Plus 14.0 Release Notes 6
Geocoding to Street Intersections Apparent Duplicate Match Candidates in Candidate List Microsoft Windows Vista-Related Issues UNIX / Linux-Related Issues Shared Installation Location of Files Installing both MapMarker Canada and MapMarker USA Log File for Cancelled or Failed Install Uninstall May Remove the MapX Abbreviations File Permissions on Geoappl Testing Application Locating Support and Contact Information Geocoding Text Files in Batch MapMarker Plus 14.0 supports delimited text files, as mentioned in Support for CSV and Delimited Text Files on page 2. Chapter 3 of the MapMarker Plus User Guide includes a section on Opening a Table or Text File, which describes how to use the Text File Wizard. However, batch geocoding is available only for MapInfo TAB files. Batch geocoding of delimited text files and remote database files is not currently possible. Current limitations are: The Text File Wizard is automatically launched for each text file. This interferes with batch processing. Even if you manually close each dialog of the Text Wizard, information from the Wizard is not passed to the batch process file. Batch geocoding of ODBC database files is not possible. Geocoding Text Files Interactively Interactive geocoding of delimited text files is not supported in MapMarker Plus This limitation is not clear in the documentation or in the user interface. Automatic geocoding of delimited text files is supported. Project File Created from Delimited Text File You cannot open a project file that was created from a delimited text file. Project files created from TAB files are supported as documented. Geocoding to Street Intersections In the User Guide, the description of intersection geocoding mentions a Match to Street Intersections check box. There is no such check box. Ignore that step in the instructions for intersection geocoding. Intersection geocoding is performed for any input address that is identified as a street intersection. Apparent Duplicate Match Candidates in Candidate List In rare instances, you may see two candidates in the candidate list with the same address and result code but slightly different Lat/Long coordinates. You will get only one close match. You can ignore the second candidate. MapMarker Plus 14.0 Release Notes 7
Microsoft Windows Vista-Related Issues You must always have administrator rights on the target machine to install MapMarker. This is true on all operating platforms. Windows Vista imposes some additional restrictions on installing and running MapMarker Plus. This section provides some background on Microsoft Vista security-related issues and gives specific information on installing and running MapMarker Plus on Windows Vista. Windows Vista uses UAC (User Account Control). When UAC is turned off, the Administrator can install MapMarker Plus and run MapMarker Plus programs with no additional requirements. However, when UAC is turned on, you must meet both of the following conditions to install MapMarker Plus, Start the MapMarker Plus Server, or Stop the MapMarker Plus Server. You must be an Administrator, and You must run the application with administrator credentials applied. When an administrator launches the installer (setup.exe), UAC asks the user if they want to allow the program to execute. When the user clicks Allow, administrator credentials are automatically applied for the user while the installation executes. For other programs, such as starting or stopping the MapMarker server or installing the server as a Windows Service, administrator credentials must be explicitly applied. Starting and Stopping the MapMarker Server: To start or stop the server using administrator credentials, right-click the shortcut for the operation that you wish to perform and from the menu that appears, select Run as administrator. If you did not install shortcuts, run the commands from an Administrator Command Prompt., as described in the topic Starting the MapMarker Server in Chapter 2 of the MapMarker Plus Developer Guide Note: To open an Administrator Command Prompt, access the Start Menu and select All Programs > Accessories. Right-click the shortcut titled "Command Prompt" and from the menu that appears, select Run as administrator. The command prompt that opens allows commands to be executed with administrator credentials applied Installing and Removing the MapMarker Server as a Windows Service: To install or remove the server as a Windows Service, first open an Administrator Command Prompt as described in the preceding Note. From the Command Prompt, run the commands to install or remove the service, as described in the topic Running the Web Application as a Windows Service in Chapter 2 of the MapMarker Plus Developer Guide. Using ODBC Data source: You must have administrator privilege to create a new ODBC data source. The user also must set up their ODBC connections in advance. Shortcut not Removed on Windows Vista: When uninstalling on Windows Vista, the shortcut may not be removed properly. The program files do uninstall properly, but the shortcut may be left behind. UNIX / Linux-Related Issues On UNIX/Linux platforms, there are some installation and startup issues related to administrator rights. Administrator Rights Required for Installation: For UNIX and Linux installations, you must have administrator rights on the target machine to install MapMarker. If you attempt to install on a machine where you do not have administrator rights, you receive an error message. Starting the Tomcat Server: On UNIX/Linux platforms, the Tomcat server must be started and stopped by a user with administrator rights. Reinstall Failure after Improper Uninstall: To properly uninstall MapMarker, you must run the Uninstaller. If you did not run the Uninstaller, but instead deleted the MapMarker directories, you will not be able to routinely re-install the product. For more details, see the topic Uninstalling MapMarker in the MapMarker Plus User Guide. Shared Installation Location of Files After the administrator installs the Desktop Application as a Shared application, each client user must then run the client desktop installation (ClientSetup.exe). The client users also must be able to access to the shared data. MapMarker Plus 14.0 Release Notes 8
By default, the data is installed in the folder: MapMarker_USA_v14_Data. Under that folder, the DesktopInstaller folder contains the ClientSetup.exe. After completing the Shared installation, the administrator can share the MapMarker_USA_v14_Data folder (and the subordinate DesktopInstaller folder). Client users then have access to everything that they need to perform a client installation and access shared data. Installing both MapMarker Canada and MapMarker USA If you install MapMarker Plus Plus Canada 8.0 and then install MapMarker Plus Plus USA 14,0 on the same computer, the MapMarker Plus Canada server may fail to start and generate error To fix this problem, edit the file: C:\Program Files\Common Files\MapInfo\MMOCX\geojni.cfg Examine the -Djava.class.path variable and insert the following path: C:\Program Files\MapInfo\MapMarker_CAN_v8\sdk\engine\lib\client This will allow the MapMarker Plus Canada server to start properly. Log File for Cancelled or Failed Install When the installation fails or is cancelled, a log file is created that provides some insight into what happened. This is useful in the silent install scenarios (install, modify, update, or uninstall), because it directs the user to what must be changed. On Microsoft Windows, the log is created in the user s desktop folder by default. On UNIX/Linux systems, this file is created in the user's home directory or at the root directory ( / ). Uninstall May Remove the MapX Abbreviations File When you uninstall MapMarker Plus 14.0, the MapX abbreviations file (MapX.abb) may be removed. If this happens, you must reinstall MapX to restore the abbreviations file. Permissions on Geoappl Testing Application The geoappl application is a C-based test program that can geocode a sample input file. This program is included with the Developer SDK and located in the sdk/additional_tools/geoeng/test directory of your MapMarker Plus 14.0 installation. You can run the program as follows: geoappl [infile] [outfile] [mapmarker data path] However, on HP UNIX machines, the geoappl program does not run unless you do both of the following: assign execute permissions to the geoappl program and the libraries located in the sdk/additional_tools/geoeng/lib directory ensure that the user can write to the directory specified for the output file (outfile in the above syntax) Locating Support and Contact Information The serial number is located on a sheet of stickers in the MapMarker package. You also need the unlocking code to install the MapMarker features and data you purchased. Call (800) option 3, between 8 am and 7 pm, EST, Monday through Friday, and the MapMarker License Authorization desk will provide your unlocking code. Have your product serial number ready when you call. MapMarker Plus 14.0 Release Notes 9
