1 Introduction This guide describes the upgrade to Empower 2 Feature Release 5 (FR 5). Throughout, Empower configurations and Empower software are referred to as follows: Empower Software for the generic Empower Software product. Empower 1154 for Empower software, Build Empower 2 for Empower software, Build Empower 2 FR 5 for Empower software, Build 2154 Feature Release 5 (FR 5). Requirements: Your system must be running Empower 2 Feature Release 3 (FR 3) software as a minimum before you can upgrade to Empower 2 Feature Release 5 (FR 5). If your Empower 2 system is running a feature release level prior to FR 3, then Empower 2 FR 5 will not install. If your system is running Empower 2 software, build 2154 (pre-fr 3), first install the necessary service packs and feature releases required to update your system to Empower 2 FR 3. Then follow the instructions in this guide to upgrade from FR 3 to Empower 2 FR 5. If your system is running Empower 1154 software, follow the instructions in the Empower 2 Upgrade and Configuration Guide, Revision A to upgrade to Empower 2 (available on the Empower 2 DVD or the Empower 2 FR 5 documentation CD). Install the necessary service packs and feature releases required to update the Empower 2 system to Empower 2 FR 3. Then follow the instructions in this guide to upgrade to Empower 2 FR 5. If you are running Millennium 32 software (version 4.0 or earlier), you must perform these tasks to upgrade to Empower 2 FR 5: Back up all of your projects using the Backup Project wizard in Configuration Manager. 1-1

Install Empower 2 FR5 following the instructions in the Empower 2 Installation and Configuration Guide, Revision B (available on the Empower 2 FR 5 documentation CD). Restore your projects using the Restore Projects wizard in Configuration Manager. This chapter describes the hardware and software needed to work with Waters Empower 2 FR 5 software. Hardware and software requirements The following tables describe the major subsystems, hardware, and operating system configurations that Empower software supports. Requirements for Empower Personal or client computers, LAC/E modules Component Minimum Operating system Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2 Random access memory (RAM) Hard disk drive DVD drive Monitor Graphics capability Printer Optional control card Application software Network interface card Intel Pentium 4, 1.7 GHz CPU 1 GB 8 GB Access to a DVD drive required Required svga video at bit color resolution Access to a printer required Waters Bus Laboratory Acquisition and Control/ Environment (buslac/e ) card or 8-port serial card Empower software Microsoft Internet Explorer 7.0 Recommended for Personal Required for secondary PC and client 1-2 Introduction

Restrictions: Windows 2000 Professional is no longer supported on Personal or client computers, or on LAC/E modules. The Empower 2 FR 5 upgrade is not supported on Citrix. If you have a previous version of Empower on your Citrix server, you must first uninstall the software using the Add/Remove program. Uninstall all Instrument Control Option Packs (ICOPs) first, then any Instrument Control Software (ICS), then any AQTs, and then the Empower client. When you have uninstalled these components, follow the instructions in the Empower 2 Installation and Configuration Guide, Revision B to install Empower 2 FR 5 on your Citrix server. Requirement: When you uninstall Empower, you must also manually delete the old milerror.log file from the Windows directory. Since this file contains information about prior error conditions which may no longer exist with a new installation of Empower, deleting the milerror.log file prevents any non-existent error conditions from being included in Verify Files. Any subsequent error conditions that occur with the new Empower installation are then accurately captured in Verify Files. Exception: The Empower 2 FR 5 installer gathers information about your system and compares your system settings to the minimum allowed specifications. If your system lacks any of the necessary requirements, the installation is not allowed, and the installation procedure stops and exits. In some instances, the installer allows you to continue; however, the installation will not be validated. Requirements for the workgroup computer Component Operating system Random access memory (RAM) Hard disk drive DVD drive Backup device Minimum Windows 2000 Server with Service Pack 4 or Windows 2000 Advanced Server with Service Pack 4 or Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2 Intel Pentium III, 1 GHz CPU 1 GB 3 hard drives Access to a DVD drive required Recommended (optional) Hardware and software requirements 1-3

Requirements for the workgroup computer (Continued) Component Monitor Graphics capability Printer Application software Network interface card Minimum Required bit color resolution Access to a printer required Empower server software Microsoft Internet Explorer /100 NIC Restriction: Windows 2000 is supported only for the Windows workgroup or Empower Enterprise server upgrades. Requirements for the Windows Empower Enterprise server Component Operating system Random access memory (RAM) Hard disk drive DVD drive Backup device Monitor Graphics capability Printer Application software Network interface card Minimum Windows 2000 Server with Service Pack 4 or Windows 2000 Advanced Server with Service Pack 4 or Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2 Intel Pentium III, 1.2 GHz CPU 2 GB 4 hard drives Access to a DVD drive required Recommended (optional) Required bit color resolution Access to a printer required Empower server software Microsoft Internet Explorer /100 NIC Required 1-4 Introduction

Requirements for the Solaris Empower Enterprise server Component Minimum Operating system Solaris 10 (64 bit) Random access memory 2 GB (RAM) Hard disks 2 hard drives (3 recommended) DVD drive Access to a DVD drive required Backup device Recommended (optional) Monitor Required Graphics capability bit color resolution Printer Access to a printer required Application software Oracle RDBMS Network interface card 10/100 NIC Required Requirement: You must have at least these minimum requirements. The installer checks for sufficient resources to run Oracle. The installer will not continue if your system has insufficient memory or contains any incorrect environmental settings. Tip: If you are using real-time virus scanning, exclude all Empower-related folders and their sub-directories. Some real-time virus scanners mistake normal Empower functionality for virus activity, which can cause data-buffering problems. Hardware and software requirements 1-5

1-6 Introduction

2 Upgrading a Standalone or Personal Workstation This chapter explains how to upgrade an Empower Personal workstation running Empower 2 FR 3, FR 4, SPC, SPD, or SPE software to a Personal workstation that runs Empower 2 FR 5 software. Restriction: Windows 2000 Professional is no longer supported on personal or client computers, or on LAC/E 32 modules. Requirements: Your system must meet the requirements specified on page 1-1. Before installing any hardware or software, perform a full backup of your hard drives (see the instructions provided by your computer s manufacturer). Contents Topic Page Scope 2-2 Requirements 2-2 Backing up projects 2-3 Archiving projects 2-3 Backing up the database 2-3 Upgrading to Empower 2 FR Verifying installed files 2-6 Viewing installed licenses and options

Scope The upgrade process involves these procedures: Backing up all projects (see Backing up projects on page 2-3). Backing up the database (see Backing up the database on page 2-3). Upgrading Empower software (see Upgrading to Empower 2 FR 5 on page 2-4). Requirements Each Empower Personal workstation requires the hardware and software specified in the table on page 1-2. Restriction: Upgrades are not supported on Empower Personal workstations running Windows Recommendation: When Setup restarts the system at the end of the upgrade, any unsaved Windows data are permanently lost. Save and close all open files on your system before upgrading. Before you begin the upgrade, perform these actions: Log in to an account with administrator privileges. Back up your projects using Configuration Manager. Archive any Empower projects that are no longer in use or needed in day-to-day activities using Configuration Manager. Back up your database and raw data files. Back up and defragment the hard drive (see the Microsoft documentation and Help system) to ensure a smooth installation and optimum performance from Empower. Close all applications, and then restart the workstation. Verify that the disk drive has enough disk space for the upgraded database. 2-2 Upgrading a Standalone or Personal Workstation

Backing up projects Use the Configuration Manager to back up your existing projects. To back up your projects 1. In Configuration Manager, select the projects to back up. 2. Click File > Backup Project. 3. Follow the instructions in the Backup Project Wizard. Archiving projects Archiving Empower projects that are no longer in use or needed in day-to-day activities reduces the total amount of data converted during the upgrade process. This type of system maintenance benefits the upgrade process by shortening the time to complete the upgrade while ensuring the archived data can be retrieved and accessed at a later time after the upgrade is complete. Archiving project data involves backing up projects that you may need later but do not need now using the Configuration Manager Backup Wizard, and then deleting them from Empower. Use this technique to minimize upgrade time. Waters offers several automated archive options for Empower. For more information, contact your local subsidiary or visit Backing up the database Before you back up the database, check the Oracle SQLNET.ORA file to ensure authentication is set to on. If authentication is set to off when you attempt to back up the database, it might not back up properly. To check authentication in the Oracle SQLNET.ORA file 1. Locate the Oracle SQLNET.ORA file (typically in X:\Empower\Oracle\Oracle10g\NETWORK\ADMIN\SQLNET.ORA, where X is the drive where Empower software is installed). 2. Open the file using the Windows Notepad application. Backing up projects 2-3

3. Locate the authentication setting: SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES = (NTS) If the setting is NTS, do not change it. Close the SQLNET.ORA file, and then proceed to back up the database. If the setting is NONE, change it to NTS. Save and close the SQLNET.ORA file, and then proceed to back up the database. To back up the database 1. In Configuration Manager, click File > Backup Database. 2. Follow the instructions in the Backup Database Wizard. Upgrading to Empower 2 FR 5 Waters supplies Empower 2 FR 5 software on a DVD. 31 Viewing installed Empower licenses and options With Empower 2 Feature Release 5, Waters introduces a new Software License Management System for managing Waters software licenses and options. Empower 2 FR 5 Personal workstations on Windows XP can use the new License Management System or the license floppy key disks, but you cannot use both. You can view active licenses and options using the Show Licenses option in the Waters Licensing Wizard. This option is available whether you use the key disks or the Wizard to activate your licenses and options. Restriction: You cannot use the Waters Licensing Wizard on computers with a Windows 2000 Server operating system. If you purchased new licenses or options, you cannot use the Wizard to install additional licenses/options unless you first remove the licenses/options you installed using the key disks. You must then use the Wizard to activate all your licenses and options. Once you use the Wizard to activate your licenses and options, you must also use it to deactivate them. For details and instructions on using the new Waters Licensing Wizard, see the Empower 2 Installation and Configuration Guide, Revision B (available on the Empower 2 FR 5 documentation CD). Post-upgrade database file cleanup The Empower 2 FR5 installer creates a new instance during the upgrade process. The new instance uses files from the previous version of Empower. You can copy the old files from their current location to the directory where the rest of the new database files reside. Recommendation: This is a copy action and not a move action. The original datafiles remain in the directory. Before you perform the copy action, verify there is sufficient space on the disk for the new files to be generated. Restriction: Relocate only the database files that are the datafiles associated with USER_DATA and INDEX_DATA. Review the contents of the file. Print or save a copy of the results. 3. Click File > Exit. Viewing installed licenses and options With Empower 2 Feature Release 5, Waters introduces a new Software License Management System for managing Waters software licenses and options. If you purchased new licenses or options, you cannot use the Wizard to install additional licenses/options unless you first remove the licenses/options you installed using the key disks, and then use the Wizard to activate all your licenses and options. Once you use the Waters Licensing Wizard to activate your licenses and options, you must also use the Wizard to deactivate them. For details and instructions on using the new Water Licensing Wizard, see the Empower 2 Installation and Configuration Guide, Revision B (available on the Empower 2 FR 5 documentation CD).
