Description Session Manager for z/os is a VTAM or TCP/IP session manager, providing secure and user-friendly access to multiple z/os systems from a single 3270 terminal. Many users in the course of their work need to switch between applications. Session Manager acts as an intermediary between the user and the applications. It gives the user a single secure signon, and then allows access to all their applications from multiple concurrent virtual sessions. Users can switch between sessions with ease, or from the menu, the user can point and click to create a new session to another VTAM or TCP/IP application. Session Manager includes all the tools and facilities required to provide administration, security, systems and performance management, and also problem determination. It delivers many features and facilities that enable users to improve their productivity. Many new enhancements are introduced in Session Manager for z/os V1.3. User customization of character sequences: The AUTOSEQ command defines a sequence of characters that automatically causes Session Manager to send a script to an application. The SAUTOSEQ command associates this particular sequence with an identified session. A new facility allows users individually to customize their own abbreviations or synonyms as Session Manager commands. Non-case sensitive escape sequence: This option allows the user to define escape sequences that are non-case sensitive. This means that escape will always work, regardless of whether or not the escape sequence is entered in upper or lower case. System symbol variables: All of the z/os system symbols are now made available as Session Manager variables. This means that it is easier to configure Session Manager when running in a parallel sysplex environment, and it allows the customizable menu screens clearly to identify where, within a sysplex, the Session Manager instance is running. System management menu 1 : In addition to the capability of issuing commands directly in Session Manager, a list of user-authorized commands is now available on the system management menu. If so configured, this list will appear as a Session Manager session on the main menu and can be accessed in the same way as any other session. Commands can be selected by tabbing to the appropriate command and pressing Enter. The system management menu was first made available via the service channel to users of Session Manager for z/os V1.2. With V1.3, further facilities enable the following functions: Replies from user queries can be interrogated such that actions may be taken against the results of these replies. This facility is provided through additional Session Manager panels. Additionally, data is returned in variables. Variables can be used in scripts and panels throughout the Session Manager system. The panels can display the returned user data, and the scripting facility can be used to take action on the data based on previously defined options. Dynamic menus exit: A new version of the dynamic menus (E22) exit is introduced. This delivers a number of new facilities: A new sample for the exit delivers easier user customization based on new parameters specified on the Session Manager SYSTEM statement. The VTAM applid can now be used in resource authorization. When authorizing a user s access to a session, the VTAM applid of the session can serve as the resource name instead of the applid from the inherited profile. This provides a consistent naming convention within VTAM and Session Manager. Undefined resources can be left hidden. If the External Security Manager (ESM) gives a Return Code of 4 in the response to the authorization request (meaning the resource is not defined to the ESM), then the session will now not be visible. This is beneficial because the Session Manager resources can be defined in advance, but not be exposed to potential users until required. Improvements in usability of Online Administration (OLA): A reduction is made in the number of panels displayed before field information is available, which provides faster access to user data by navigating through fewer panels. Broadcast command panel 1 : The Broadcast command panel can now be accessed directly from the Session Manager main menu in the same way as any other session. The available parameters will be displayed, and can be modified by the user before the command is issued. Only users with the appropriate authorization level will be able to issue BROADCAST commands. User-defined session ordering 1 : When using the OLA facility, users can now define the order in which their sessions appear on the Session Manager menu. This facility is available to all users based on the OLA class specified for that user. FIND and FILTER facilities for Session Manager main menu 1 : Users can now quickly find the session they want to access, or restrict the available sessions list to those matching criteria they have defined. FIND will locate the first instance of a character string. FILTER will restrict the display of available sessions to the characters applicable to the FILTER command. Extended and simplified ESM integration 1 : In addition to the ability to check usernames and passwords in an ESM, Session Manager can now obtain a user s authorization level or OLA security class from an ESM. This allows for central control of user authorization levels in a simple way without requiring any additional user input. Shared User facility enhancements 1 : Two new options, SHARESESS and SHAREDISC, enable a single userid to sign on to multiple terminals and access the same sessions. PassTicket support 1 : A mechanism is provided by which the unencrypted passwords used for logging on to applications can be replaced by encrypted, time-limited tokens. Increased number of sessions 1 : The maximum number of sessions has been increased from 999 to 9999. Translation to national languages 1 : Session Manager has now been translated to Canadian French, German, and Japanese. All the Panels, Scripts, Text and Messages that have been translated are provided in the form of Language Packs (LPs). The default LP is English, but the other languages are shipped as part of the product, and can be installed by the customer. With the appropriate LPs installed, the user can specify the language in which 205-264 -2-

screen text is displayed, and this can be different from the default language specified for the Session Manager instance. For example, even if the default language is English, an individual user can be set up so that, once logged on, German text is displayed. Extension to TN3270 support 1 : TN3270 support has been extended to provide support for the TN3270E protocol. Addition of user-level session Access Control Block support 1 : User-level session Access Control Block (ACB) support is added, enabling an installation to use one virtual terminal name for all of a user s sessions. 1 First made available via the service channel to users of Session Manager for z/os V1.2 Accessibility by people with disabilities The following features support use by people with disabilities: Operation by keyboard alone Optional font enlargement and high-contrast display settings Suitability for use by people with hearing impairment Capability to use with screen readers and magnifiers for those with visual impairment. Softcopy documentation for the product is provided in PDF format. This documentation supports optional font enlargement and high-contrast display settings, and may be operated by the keyboard alone. Fully accessible softcopy documentation, with alternative text for diagrams, will be made available on request. Section 508 of the U.S. Rehabilitation Act Session Manager for z/os V1.3 is capable as of December 16, 2005, when used in accordance with associated IBM documentation, of satisfying the applicable requirements of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, provided that any assistive technology used with the product properly interoperates with it. Value Unit-based pricing Value Unit pricing for eligible zseries IPLA programs enables a lower cost of incremental growth and enterprise aggregation. Each zseries IPLA product with Value Unit pricing has a single price per Value Unit and a conversion matrix, called Value Unit Exhibit, for converting from some designated measurement to Value Units. Most commonly Millions of Service Units (MSUs) is the measurement designated by IBM to be converted to Value Units. Some other measurements are engines or messages. Since MSUs are the most common measurement, that measurement will be used for the remainder of this description. Value Unit pricing offers price benefits for customers. For each zseries IPLA program with Value Unit pricing, the quantity of that program needed to satisfy applicable IBM terms and conditions is referred to as the required license capacity. Each of the various Value Unit Exhibits stipulate that the larger your required license capacity, the fewer Value Units per MSU needed. Value Unit Exhibits are uniquely identified by a three digit code and referred to using the nomenclature VUExxx, where xxx is the three digit code. Subsequent acquisitions of Value Unit priced programs offers additional price benefits for customers. The quantity of each zseries IPLA program that you have acquired is referred to as entitled license capacity. If you wish to grow your entitled license capacity for a zseries IPLA program, the calculation to determine additional needed Value Units is based upon the number of Value Units already acquired. For each zseries IPLA program with Value Unit Pricing, you should: Determine the required license capacity, in MSUs Aggregate the MSUs across the enterprise Convert the total MSUs to Value Units, using the applicable Value Unit Exhibit Multiply the price per Value Unit by the total number of Value Units to determine the total cost. To simplify conversion from the designated measurement to VUs or vice-versa, use the Value Unit Converter Tool. For additional information or to obtain a copy of the Value Unit Converter Tool, visit the Value Unit Converter Tool Web site http://ibm.com/zseries/swprice/vuctool Note that Value Units of a given product cannot be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with Value Units of another product. To determine the required license capacity for the zseries IPLA program you selected, refer to the Terms and conditions section. IPLA and subscription and support considerations IPLA licenses can be transferred from one machine to another within, but not limited to an enterprise. The customer may aggregate the capacity for all the processors the product is operated on to achieve a more economic price. This will result in a single Proof of Entitlement (PoE). It is the customer s responsibility to manage the distribution of Value Units within the limits of the entitlement of the product license. Subscription and Support must cover the same capacity as the product license entitlement. Subscription and Support will be available in the country in which the agreement is made. Product positioning Session Manager for z/os V1.3 is intended for enterprise or medium-sized customers running a range of applications on mainframe systems, with customers accessing these applications at 3270 terminals or workstations running 3270 emulators. Customers may be running CICS or using VTAM, typically with LU6.2 or 3270 connections, or TCP/IP. The product provides the customers with a simple and effective way of accessing these applications seamlessly, together with a wide range of other valuable facilities. This MLC program is called the parent program. Sub-capacity Mainframes: In cases where sub-capacity is applicable, the following terms apply: Reference-based: The required license capacity of a zseries IPLA program with these terms equals the license capacity of the applicable MLC program. This MLC program is called the parent program. Full machine-based: The required license capacity of a zseries IPLA program with full machine-based terms equals the MSU rated capacity of the machines where the zseries IPLA program executes. For more information on mainframe MSU rated capacities, refer to The System/370, System/390, and zseries Machine Exhibit (Z125-3901) or visit the Mainframes section of the zseries Exhibits Web site http://ibm.com/zseries/library/swpriceinfo/ For more information on sub-capacity zseries IPLA terms and conditions, refer to Software Announcement 204-184, dated August 10, 2004. Additional information for products with reference-based terms zseries IPLA sub-capacity programs with reference-based terms adds value to the parent program across the environment, regardless of where in environment the zseries IPLA program executes. An environment is defined as either a single/stand-alone machine or a qualified Parallel Sysplex. Customers may have one or more different environments across their enterprise. To determine the required license capacity for each zseries IPLA program with referenced-based terms, each environment should be assessed separately. When a zseries IPLA sub-capacity program with reference-based terms is used in a qualified Parallel Sysplex environment the required license capacity of the zseries IPLA program must equal with the license capacity of the parent program across the Parallel Sysplex. Qualified Parallel Sysplex refers to one: 1. That meets the criteria defined in Hardware Announcement 198-001, dated January 13, 1998 2.
