1 Software Announcement November 8, 2005 IBM Virtualization Engine Enterprise Workload Manager for z/os, V2.1.0 Overview IBM is expanding the traditional view of virtualization which says that a large system can be made to look like many smaller systems to include capabilities to make many smaller components (systems and devices such as storage and networking) look like one. This expanded definition of virtualization is delivered through the consistent use of open standards the foundation of the IBM Virtualization Engine platform. IBM is using this new view to take the next steps in virtualization by transforming the Virtualization Engine into an interoperable platform of technologies that broadens and enhances the current capabilities. The IBM Virtualization Engine platform encompasses a collection of management and performance services and offers comprehensive access and views. This platform approach supports a business policy-based infrastructure that allows for: Flexible starting points based on current and future business and IT requirements Virtualizing systems resources to simplify systems management Options that can be customized to your business needs Virtual management applied to systems that enables many small resources to be managed through a single interface Consistent expansion Open interfaces and standards to allow other vendor products to participate in the infrastructure The Virtualization Engine Enterprise (EWLM) provides dynamic policy-based workload management to help improve optimization of resources in multi-tiered heterogeneous application environments. With EWLM, application performance can be measured against predefined goals by end-to-end collection and reporting. Both IBM and select non-ibm platforms and operating systems are supported. In this release, EWLM adds the capability to manage from z/os and continues the evolution toward autonomic management of customer service-level objectives in heterogeneous, multi-tiered server environments. 2 Description IBM Enterprise (EWLM) provides virtual resource management capability across the IBM product family of server hardware and beyond, bringing self-optimization in the form of performance and response time management for enabled systems. It includes multi-tiered applications such as data mining, Web banking, , and B2B inventory management; and servers that run many different applications concurrently. EWLM can help you to improve optimization, based on business priority, of select server, storage, and network resources to achieve a cross-platform performance goal for a given application or service class. The primary focus of the first EWLM release in 2004 was the capture of relevant statistics for reporting purposes, addressing the customer need to understand the topology of their infrastructure from a business perspective. That release supported the z/os, AIX, i5/os, Microsoft Windows, and Sun Solaris platforms as managed servers. It also supported AIX, i5/os, Windows, and Linux as platforms hosting the EWLM domain manager. EWLM management capability was limited to influencing the distribution of arriving work from the network, guiding arriving network connection requests to the servers best able to satisfy performance objectives while steering work away from servers that are performing poorly. For this function, EWLM supported AIX, Windows, and Solaris in its first release. In this release, EWLM builds upon the base functions delivered previously, and continues the evolution toward autonomic management of customer service-level objectives in heterogeneous, multi-tiered server environments. EWLM support focuses on expanding the set of operating system platforms supported as an EWLM Domain Manager and as an EWLM Managed Server to provide expanded coverage of heterogeneous applications. This release also introduces dynamic, goal-oriented EWLM server resource optimization algorithms, focused on management of logically partitioned i5 and p5 hardware. With this release, EWLM has added the capability to manage from z/os and all current IBM running the most current release of the Linux operating system. Managed server platform support is also extended to pick up platforms critical to the success of EWLM: support for Linux running on IBM hardware and support for the HP-UX operating system. With support being delivered as an SPE on zos V1.6 and V1.7 in 2005, customers will be able to correlate EWLM reporting with z/os WLM reporting and define specific goals for EWLM end-to-end work requests. This release also takes the next step in the long-term evolutionary path of EWLM toward active, autonomic, resource optimization on behalf of end-to-end performance of customer-determined service class objectives. EWLM running on z/os will help optimize LPAR CPU management on P5 servers running AIX, i5/os, or Linux on POWER (if the applicable EWLM Managed Server components are licensed). Both ARM-instrumented and uninstrumented applications can benefit; however, ARM-instrumented applications will benefit via finer-grained controls and end-to-end based management. Product positioning IBM mainframe customers are already acclimated to the concepts of virtualization, the management of mixed workloads on a server, and flexible allocation of system resources. The mainframe s advanced workload management technologies use established policy, business priorities, and performance objectives to direct resources to key applications when needed. IBM mainframes have a history of hardware and software innovation and reliability designed to help meet evolving On Demand Business requirements. The System z9 and zseries advanced hardware and operating system environments let you logically partition the machine; share CPU, memory, and I/O (channels and associated devices); add or remove computing Capacity on Demand; and provide high-speed communications among partitions; all of which are critical to successfully deploying a virtualized solution. During spikes in demand, the mainframe s ability to dynamically allocate system resources to varying workloads and business processes can make the difference between efficient execution and the cost of slow response times or system crashes. The longstanding z/os (WLM) function allows z/os to perform automatic sense and response management of multiple diverse workloads based on business policies and workload performance objectives. WLM s scope extends from the network, with intelligent TCP/IP and SNA routing, within a single z/os image, out to the disks where the data is stored. WLM can also manage priorities across multiple systems in a Parallel Sysplex. The Intelligent Resource Director (IRD) function extends z/os WLM capabilities to automatically balance CPU and channel resources across LPARs on a System z9 or zseries server based on business priority. While the IBM mainframe has long provided leading-edge management functions, data centers do not live by System z9 and zseries alone. In today s environment, it is increasingly common for customers to have multiple servers and storage devices running a variety of operating systems and middleware products. As business units of work traverse multiple operating environments, the IBM Virtualization Engine Enterprise Workload Manager for z/os (EWLM for z/os) promises to help extend these capabilities to allow businesses to monitor and manage applications and resources across heterogeneous computing environments. EWLM for z/os extends the scope of z/os workload management capabilities across multiple platforms to monitor applications and resources. It is planned to deliver workload monitoring and management capability to enable the shifting of network resources and workloads based on changing requirements. EWLM is a breakthrough technology that brings self-optimization, in the form of performance and response time management, to an entire Virtualization Engine-enabled IT environment. EWLM allows system administrators to define business-oriented performance objectives for workloads running across different platforms, and then monitor and manage actual performance against those objectives. EWLM and z/os WLM can run simultaneously; EWLM monitoring does not affect z/os management and monitoring. A z/os customer can continue z/os management with WLM and use EWLM to intelligently monitor and manage application workloads, workflows, and allocation of system resources across the heterogeneous environment (including AIX, OS/400, Linux, Windows, Solaris and HP/UX) (if the

3 applicable EWLM Managed Server components are licensed) based on business policy and priority. For customers requiring legendary availability, reliability, and security, and the intrinsic advantages of economy of scale, System z9 and zseries running z/os may be the ideal platforms for providing the management hub for expansive Virtualization Engine-enabled infrastructures. Core competencies such as virtualization, business continuity, advanced systems management, autonomic functionality, and the ability to process secure transactions are capabilities that put the mainframe in a class of its own. Leveraging System z9 and zseries and EWLM for z/os to manage sophisticated and extensive networks will become a natural extension of these core capabilities.
