Software Announcement November 11, 2003 Airline Control System V2.3 delivers a new base for exploiting 64-bit addressing Overview Airline Control System (ALCS) is a control monitor designed to run in an OS/390 or z/os environment. ALCS is part of the Transaction Processing Facility (TPF) family of products and is also referred to as TPF/MVS. ALCS provides a TPF API for OS/390 or z/os environments. This new release, V2.3, will be the base for exploiting the new 64-bit addressing functions of current and future versions of OS/390 and z/os. Key prerequisites OS/390 V2.10 or z/os Planned availability date December 12, 2003 At a glance V2.3 has the following new facilities and enhancements: Real storage above 2 GB, 64-bit addressing Online Communications Table Maintenance (OCTM) System takeover facility E-mail queue handler Multiple TCP/IP listeners Virtual IP addressing (VIPA) Long-term pool monitoring enhancement For ordering, contact: Your IBM representative or the Americas Call Centers at 800-IBM-CALL Reference: LE001 This announcement is provided for your information only. For additional information, contact your IBM representative, call 800-IBM-4YOU, or visit the IBM home page at: http://www.ibm.com. Description ALCS V2.3 will be the base for exploiting the new 64-bit addressing functions of current and future versions of OS/390 and z/os. All enhancements shipped as program temporary fixes (PTFs) since the release of ALCS V2.2 have been consolidated in V2.3. This new release of ALCS, V2.3, has the following new facilities and enhancements: Real storage above 2 GB, 64-bit addressing The availability of 64-bit addressing allows ALCS to use real memory above 2 GB, thus removing memory constraints and freeing memory for the use by applications and other subsystems. Online Communications Table Maintenance (OCTM) This facility allows the dynamic reconfiguration of the communications network without scheduled outages. System takeover facility The system takeover facility allows for a hot ALCS standby system, which significantly reduces the time required for planned and unplanned switchovers. E-mail queue handler The e-mail queue handler manages the queueing of outbound messages, while the path to the remote destination is unavailable. Multiple TCP/IP listeners This facility allows the use of multiple ports for the simultaneous reception of transactions by multiple TCP/IP applications. Virtual IP addressing (VIPA) This facility makes TCP/IP applications independent of physical Internal Protocol (IP) addresses, improving the ease of system management. Long-term pool monitoring enhancement This enhancement provides more accurate control over the use of long-term file pools. Product positioning The Airline Control System, a member of IBM s family of Transaction Processing Facility products, continues to be enhanced to stay up to date with information technology and customer requirements. Enhancements are aimed at meeting the following main objectives: As mainframe processors, their operating systems, and related middleware evolve, ALCS will continue to exploit relevant new facilities. The ALCS User Group defines new customer requirements and agrees with IBM regarding priority and timing of their development. One of the objectives of ALCS is to be API-compatible with TPF4.1 and to support TPFDF. Any API changes to those two products, that are relevant to ALCS customers, are also made to ALCS. The new release of ALCS, V2.3, is a milestone in this ongoing process of enhancements, and all future enhancements will be based on the new release. Hardware and software support services SmoothStart /Installation services IBM SmoothStart and Installation Services are not provided. Reference information For the announcement of ALCS V2.2.1, refer to Software Announcement 296-234, dated June 25, 1996. Accessibility by people with disabilities ALCS V2.3 meets accessibility requirements with the exception of some diagrams in the documentation. If requested by customers, we will make textual descriptions of those diagrams available to them. Section 508 of the U.S. Rehabilitation Act ALCS V2.3 is capable as of December 19, 2003, when used in accordance with IBM s associated documentation, of satisfying the applicable requirements of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, provided that any assistive technology used with the product properly interoperates with it. 203-304 -2-

IBM Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that provides you with an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support on the IBM. You should benefit from greater system availability due to faster problem resolution and pre-emptive monitoring. IBM Electronic Services is comprised of two separate but complementary elements: IBM Electronic Services news page and IBM Electronic Service Agent. IBM Electronic Services news page provides you with a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used by customers to access IBM Internet services and support. By using the news page, it enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems. The IBM Electronic Service Agent is no-additional-charge software that resides on your IBM system that is designed to proactively monitor events and transmit system inventory information to IBM on a periodic customer-defined timetable. The IBM Electronic Service Agent tracks system inventory, hardware error logs and performance information. If the server is under a current IBM maintenance service agreement or within the IBM Warranty period, the Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about -3-203-304

potential problems enables IBM to provide proactive service that maintains higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent will be made available to IBM service support representatives when they are helping answer your questions or diagnosing problems. Product LPAR utilization capacity for a VWLC product is the highest number of MSUs utilized by the combined LPARs in which a VWLC product runs concurrently during a reporting period. The number of MSUs is based on the highest observed rolling 4-hour average utilization used by the combination of the relevant LPARs during the reporting period. Refer to Software Announcement 200-354, dated October 3, 2000, Software Announcement 201-258, dated September 11, 2001, and Software Announcement 202-105, dated April 30, 2002 for additional details on IBM Workload License Charges. Sub-Capacity charges terms and conditions zseries software charges at less than full machine capacity for eligible VWLC products apply when z/os is running in z/architecture (64 bit) mode on an IBM zseries 900, no other MVS-based operating system is licensed to that server and the required information is provided by the customer in accordance with the applicable terms. 203-304 -4-

Sub-capacity charges for a VWLC product is based on the utilization of the LPARs where/when the product executes. To obtain charges at less than full machine capacity for VWLC products the customer is required to: Sign and abide by the terms of the Attachment for zseries Workload License Charges Pre-ILM (Z125-6516). Obtain the latest version of the Sub-Capacity Reporting Tool. Install any VWLC product and zseries 900 Licensed Internal Code (LIC) service required for sub-capacity charging. Required service will be listed on the WLC web site, http://www.ibm.com/zseries/swprice Collect SMF data as required by the Sub-Capacity Reporting Tool. Retain the collected SMF data for a period of not less than six months. Use the IBM provided Sub-Capacity Reporting Tool to process the collected SMF data. The Sub-Capacity Report produced by the tool is used to determine required license capacity for the VWLC products. Required license capacity is determined based on the largest MSU value of a VWLC product running concurrently in all LPARs during the reporting period. IBM reserves the right to request the system data that supports these product-defined capacity values for a period of up to six months after the data was collected. Provide an initial Sub-Capacity Report to begin to receive the benefits of less than full machine capacity charges. Sub-capacity charging will follow submission of a Sub-Capacity Report. There will be no retroactive application of sub-capacity charges. Submit Sub-Capacity Reports monthly.
