Installation Instructions Network Version An Access File is required to use this program. To request an Access File, register the CDROM at www.longman.com/ae/multimedia. Click on the Register tab at the top of the page and follow the instructions. These instructions explain how to perform a network (server-client) installation of this CD-ROM on a local area network (LAN). We recommend that only qualified system administrators perform this network installation. Note: In some computer network environments you must have "administrator privileges" to install this course. Please follow these instructions precisely and in the order indicated. Step 1: Server Installation 1. Create a shared network folder for the server installation. 1.1. Map each client computer to the network drive on which this shared network folder is created. The drive must be mapped so that it can be accessed through My Computer on the client computers. Note: UNC (Universal Naming Convention) path mapping is not supported. Example: \\Longman Server Installation\Longman CDROMs-Server 1.2. Give students and teachers access to this shared network folder. 1.3. For example, in these instructions we name this folder "Longman CD- ROMs - Server." Note: If you perform a network installation of more than one Longman CD- ROM, use the same shared network folder for all courses. Separate 1
subfolders will be created automatically for each course. 2. Use the CD-ROM to start the server installation. 2.1 We recommend that you do the server installation directly on the server. Do not do a server installation from a computer that will also receive a client installation. 2.2 Insert the CD-ROM into the server's CD-ROM drive. Open My Computer. Double-click on your CD-ROM disc drive, which is illustrated by the symbol. Double-click on the "install" file, which is illustrated by the symbol. 3. Follow the directions on the screen. Be careful when completing the following four screens. 3.1 On the Choose Installation Type page, select option "3 Server", and then click on the Next button. 2
3.2 On the Choose Server Installation Folder page, click on the Choose button. Browse to find the shared network folder for the server installation through My Computer. Select that folder and then click on the OK button. 3
3.3 On the Choose Access File screen (see next screenshot), select a valid Access File to authenticate your course. An Access File should be sent to you via email. If you do not have an Access File, please contact your local Longman office or e-mail EPSupport@pearsoned.com. Note: To select an Access File, first download it so that it can be found on the computer that will do the server installation. The Access File must be successfully installed only on the server (not on the client computers). Do not modify Access Files. If an Access File is modified, it will not work. 4
4. Complete the server installation. 4.1 Follow the directions on the screen, and then wait for the server installation to finish. Depending on the hardware, this may take up to 40 minutes. 4.2 We recommend that users have read-only access to the course folder. The course folder is one level below the Longman CD-ROMs - Server folder and uses the course name (In these instructions, the course name is English 1 (U.S.)). New Technology File System (NTFS) can give users read-only access so that course files cannot be changed or deleted. 4.3 Students and teachers must be able to write to (save) files in the datastore folder. Teachers and administrators need full control (delete) permissions to this folder. 5
Note: The course media files are always saved on the server. During client installations, you will also be given the option to install the course media files on each client computer ("full" client installation). Step 2: Client Installations Note: In some computer network environments you must have "administrator privileges" to install this course. 5. Use the CD-ROM to start the client installation. 6
Note: This process must be followed on each client computer. We strongly recommend that you physically go to each computer to follow this process (instead of trying to perform client installations from a central computer). 5.1 Insert the CD-ROM into the computer's CD-ROM drive. Open My Computer. Double-click on your CD-ROM disc drive, which is illustrated by the symbol. Double-click on the "install" file, which is illustrated by the symbol. 6. Follow the directions on the screen. Be careful when completing the following three screens. 6.1 On the Installation Type page, select option "4 Client", and then click on the Next button. 7
6.2 On the Client Installation: Minimal or Full page, click on "Minimal" or "Full", and then click on the Next button. On fast local area networks we recommend the "minimal" client installation (course media files will be served from the server). On slower local area networks (for example, 10Mbps networks) we recommend the "full" client installation (course media files will be served from each client computer). 6.3 Then you will see the Locate Server page. Click on the Choose button. Browse to find the "Longman CD-ROMs (Server Installation)" folder that you created. Click on that folder, and then click on the OK button. 8
7. Follow the directions on the screen to complete each client installation. 8. Students may begin by double-clicking on the course's desktop icon. Additional Information: To uninstall this course, click Start > Programs > Longman CD-ROMs. Select this course, select Uninstall, and then follow the directions to complete the uninstallation. 9
