SOLUTION GUIDE FOR BROADCASTERS TV DIRECT TO VIEWERS Deliver live OTT, timeshift and VOD services with an amazing viewing experience, without redesigning your existing system, and save on delivery costs.

NEED With the rapid shift in TV consumption behavior and growing preferences for flexibility, broadcasters are increasingly looking for a solution to originate and stream their TV content to multiple devices and formats. As content is now demanded in higher resolution standards e.g. UHD or 360 degree content, the solution must also support rapid response to increased capacity needs at the most efficient delivery cost. CHALLENGE Performing origin functions such as adding a new format, recording live assets and personalizing streams on a broadcaster s own encoder lacks flexibility and results in low performance. It also comes with high costs due to duplication of assets, which have to be stored in all required formats. Which are the typical origin functions? Support delivery with new requirements and formats devices, languages, subtitles etc. Convert live to VOD Personalize with unique adverts Store and deliver to CDNs and even directly to clients Many broadcasters today outsource their origin functions to third party CDN providers. But as demand grows and new devices are being added to the market, distributing and converting content into different formats has become too expensive and slow. Broadcasters, being dependent on an external provider, become slower in reacting to new market requirements and lose out on opportunities. General-purpose CDNs conventionally apply a pay only for what you use pricing model. This model is great for TV providers with smaller transactions or assets. However as your capacity or reach grows either by number of assets, broader audience reaching larger geographical regions, increasing formats or services you wish to support the costs become uncontrollable. Quality of experience is another issue. CDN providers often choose the best delivery route based on cost and availability. During unexpected traffic bursts, bottlenecks can occur because CDNs may run out of server capacity in a given region and begin routing traffic to servers located in a different region. The ISP has no control over the volume of traffic entering their network making planning difficult. Viewing experience suffers, viewers become frustrated, and ultimately leave. 2 TV DIRECT TO VIEWERS

solution deploy your own origin Bringing core origin functions in-house gives you the tools necessary to control your costs, the service you support, and viewing experience. Other benefits include: Duplication of assets and workflows is removed and costs can be controlled and optimized Multiple CDNs can still be used for delivery but costs are now comparable, facilitating better negotiation Ability to monitor and measure in-house ensures that CDN selection is based on the quality delivered by each CDN Ability to rapidly add new devices and services e.g. DASH for Chrome HOW it WORKs Streaming direct to clients Connected TV, tablet, PC, gaming console, smartphone, STB TV CONTENT LIVE VOD Encoded/ transcoded files ORIGIN with recording, ad insertion, measurement HLS MSS DASH Streaming to 3rd party CDNs 1. All of your assets, either live ATS feed or VOD or recordings, are ingested in the origin into a mezzanine format ready for rapid repackaging to required ABR format on request. 2. On client request, the content is repackaged and encrypted, if needed, on the fly to the right ABR format (e.g. HLS, MSS, DASH) required by the client device. 3. Streaming can be delivered directly to clients or via third party CDN providers. 3 TV DIRECT TO VIEWERS

what it does Repackaging into different formats required by today s device types HLS, MPEG-DASH, MSS, MP2, MP4, HEVC, progressive download Protection supports existing formats without the need to re-encode, covering several DRMs Recording live broadcasts for timeshift TV pause-live, start-over, catch-up and cloud DVR Storage of these recordings as rolling buffers or VOD files Stream personalization including ad insertion, subtitling and multi-language audio support Monitoring and measurement of viewer behavior, content engagement patterns, quality of sessions delivered etc. TV CONTENT LIVE VOD Encoded/ transcoded files ORIGIN hls mss dash vod timeshift load balancing CDN CDN 3rd party ISP cache User devices deploy your own CDN Broadcasters relying on a general-purpose CDN for delivery can choose to deploy their own CDN to take control over how they route traffic into the ISPs, minimizing traffic burst that can cause delays, buffering and poor viewing experience. Other benefits include: Cost and traffic control by setting up direct peering agreements with ISPs this is mutually beneficial and the ISP can plan capacity better Ability to scale capacity without impacting existing setup by deploying own caches to store and deliver the most popular content from within the ISPs network rather than over peering connections Deploying own cache is often a lower cost alternative than the cost of upgrading routers that form the peering connections 4 TV DIRECT TO VIEWERS

FEATURED EDGEWARE PRODUCTS FOR BROADCASTERS TV Content CAPTURE Edgeware TV Content Capture ingests and records your live content to enable VOD and timeshift TV, so that you can offer TV services such as live-to-vod, SVOD, cloud DVR, pause-live, catch-up and restart TV. You can simultaneously record and deliver thousands of programs to millions of viewers. It is also highly scalable as traffic level grows. Services and streaming capacity are simply unlocked via license keys and systems can be upgraded without downtime. Moreover, in a hybrid model, adding delivery servers at aggregation points provides a more cost-effective option than adding more backhaul capacity. TV Repackaging Edgeware TV Repackaging converts your live and VOD assets to the different streaming formats required by today s devices such as HLS, MSS, DASH. You can rapidly support new packaging requirements as new client devices are introduced. Content can also be encrypted according on its digital rights management (DRM) schemes. Both repackaging and encryption are done on-the-fly, either centrally or at the edge of the network. You only have to keep a single copy of your video profiles and the right ABR formats are generated on request. It also supports your existing libraries without the need to re-encode these assets. This translates to significant savings in storage. Ad Insertion Edgeware Ad Insertion enables you to deliver a personalized viewing experience to your viewers by inserting or replacing new ads when the content is requested. It works with live, catch-up, VOD content for both IPTV and OTT services. The ads can be inserted either on the client side or server side depending on your requirements. Server-side ad insertion bypasses ad-blocking technology (usually installed on the web browser) because it streams a newly stitched content to the client. Client-side ad insertion, on the other hand, fetches the new ads from ad server to be inserted into the stream on client request. HOW TO DEPLOY All Edgeware products can be deployed in the cloud or virtualization platform or as hybrid cloud, in combination with Edgeware TV server. Edgeware TV server can be placed in the origin or at the edge. When deployed on Edgeware TV server, all services including, repackaging, encryption, caching and streaming, can be enabled on a single appliance. The software works with all virtualization platforms. Read more about Edgeware products at www.edgeware.tv www.edgeware.tv STOCKHOLM HQ USA MEXICO HONG KONG Edgeware AB, HQ Edgeware, Inc.
