Description V3.5, adds the following features to its already function-rich environment: Platform Support Two new operating platforms are now supported: HP-UX 11 and Windows 2000. Consistent function and capabilities are provided across all of the platforms supported. Version 3.5 expands the list of platforms that already includes Windows NT, Sun Solaris (both V2.6 and V2.7), and AIX/6000. Combine this list to three other now-available implementations of WebSphere Application Server, for OS/400, Red Hat Linux, and Novell Netware and we have a comprehensive cross-platform structure. Java 2 Software Development Kit V1.2.2 Support SDK 1.2.2 is the latest stable version of the Java Virtual Machine base required within the server runtime environment. WebSphere now supports SDK 1.2.2 as well as providing it within the product package across all supported operating platforms. SDK 1.2.2, provides increased performance and expanded capabilities for improved dynamic and static Web content. Usability V3.5, provides ease-of-use across installation, administration, and product documentation. As a result, WebSphere Application Server V3.5, now has a comprehensive, complete, and accurate Web-based documentation center that users can take advantage of right from the start. The installation and administration procedures have improved usability while still maintaining a rich and flexible set of selectable configurations and prerequisites for tailored, open, and complete solutions. The integration with Lotus Domino is enhanced with better support for Domino s security framework providing single sign-on abilities for Web-based clients. The integration with WebSphere Commerce Suite is improved with performance and security features. The integration with VisualAge for Java Enterprise Edition is enhanced with support for the Java 2 Software Development Kit V1.2.2 base across platforms when generating e-business applications such as servlets, Java Server Pages, JavaBeans, and Enterprise JavaBeans components. Transaction Management WebSphere s EJB Server monitors and controls containers used within the server. Persistent storage for transactional EJB components now includes support for Sybase which can be used in conjunction with or instead of the already-supported DB2 (distributed as part of WebSphere) and Oracle databases. HTTP Server A function-rich IBM HTTP server (based on technology from the Apache HTTP server) is included with additional security and performance enhancements new for V3.5: Fast Common Gateway Interface providing a considerable boost in CGI performance. Lightweight Directory Access Protocol Client 3.1 Support on NT, AIX, and Sun Solaris. NT Performance Monitor. Proxy Support: Proxy support enabling forwarding of HTTP requests from one server (the proxy) to another. The proxy server makes the request on behalf of the client. Proxy capability is required in products such as IBM Small Business suites. Remote Configuration Updates. Server Start/Stop. Web Distributed Authority and Versioning and new for V3.5, remote access to files on the server via third-party software., V3.5, carries over the functions of the previous version including: A rich e-business application deployment environment with a complete set of application services for transaction management, security, clustering, performance, availability, connectivity, and scalability Leading-edge implementations of the most up-to-date Java-based technologies and APIs Comprehensive connectivity support for interacting with relational databases, object databases, transaction processing systems, MQ-enabled applications, and hierarchical databases A migration path to a more scalable and transactional environment from WebSphere s Standard Edition with a superset of capabilities for a complete Java-based Web application platform A focus on medium- to high-level transactional environments used in conjunction with dynamic Web content generation and Web-initiated transactions Performance and scaling attributes that support bean-managed and container-managed persistence for entity beans and session beans with transaction management and monitoring Container management and persistent storage within a transactional environment for Servlets and Enterprise JavaBeans components A rich extensible Markup Language (XML) parsing and configuration environment Admin Client and the Distributed Debugger component Related Information V3.5 does not include the Site Analyzer component.
