Preface Preface ABOUT THIS GUIDE This maual explais how to operate your LifeBook otebook s hardware ad built-i system software. Your otebook is compatible with the IBM PC AT. It comes with Microsoft Widows 2000, Widows XP Home, or Widows XP Pro pre-istalled. The LifeBook P Series otebook is a completely selfcotaied uit with a active-matrix (TFT) color LCD display with touch scree capabilities. Wireless LAN O/Off Switch The Wireless LAN O/Off Switch turs the wireless LAN device o ad off. Wireless LAN Atea The Wireless LAN Atea is located behid the cover. Headphoe Jack The headphoe jack allows you to coect headphoes or powered exteral speakers. Ati-theft Lock Slot The ati-theft lock slot allows you to attach a optioal physical lock dow device. Mii-VGA Jack The mii-vga jack allows you to coect your LifeBook otebook to a exteral moitor with the icluded cable adapter. (See Mii-VGA Port o page 35 for more iformatio) USB Ports The two USB ports allow you to coect Uiversal Serial Bus devices. (See Uiversal Serial Bus Ports o page 35 for more iformatio) Modem (RJ-11) Telephoe Port The Modem (RJ-11) telephoe jack is for attachig a telephoe lie to the iteral multiatioal 56K modem. (See Modem (RJ-11) Telephoe Jack o page 35 for more iformatio) POINT The iteral multiatioal modem is desiged to the ITU-T V.90 stadard. Its maximum speed of 53000bps is the highest allowed by FCC, ad its actual coectio rate depeds o the lie coditios. The maximum speed is 33600bps at upload. For additioal iformatio about the multiatioal modem, refer to the Fujitsu web site at: www.fujitsupc.com/modems LAN (RJ-45) Jack The iteral LAN (RJ-45) jack is used for a iteral Fast Etheret (10/100 Base-TX) coectio. (See Iteral LAN (RJ-45) Jack o page 35 for more iformatio) WARNING The iteral modem is ot iteded for use with Digital PBX systems. Do ot coect the iteral modem to a Digital PBX as it may cause serious damage to the iteral modem or your etire otebook. Cosult your PBX maufacturer s documetatio for details. Some hotels have Digital PBX systems. Be sure to fid out BEFORE you coect your modem. 9

LifeBook P1000 Notebook Sectio Two Mai Uit ad Cofiguratio Label (approximate locatio) Battery Release Battery Release Lithium io Battery BOTTOM COMPONENTS The followig is a brief descriptio of your LifeBook otebook s bottom pael compoets. Battery Release Slide the releases to remove the battery. Lithium io Battery The Lithium io battery ca be istalled i the battery bay by pushig it ito place. The battery ca be removed whe swappig a discharged battery for a charged oe, or whe the computer is to be stored over a log period of time. (See Lithium io Battery o page 31 for more iformatio) Mai Uit ad Cofiguratio Label The cofiguratio label shows the model umber ad other iformatio about your LifeBook otebook. I additio, the cofiguratio portio of the label has the serial umber ad maufacturer iformatio that you will eed to give your support represetative. Gettig to Kow Your Notebook Battery Chargig Idicator Power DC-I Battery Idetifier Battery Level Hard Drive Access PC Card Access Numeric Scroll Lock Lock Caps Lock Status Idicator Pael The Status Idicator displays symbols that correspod to a specific compoet of your Fujitsu LifeBook otebook. These symbols tell you how each of those compoets are operatig. (Figure 2-9) POWER INDICATOR The Power idicator symbol states whether your system is operatioal. It has several differet states, each of which tells you what mode your otebook is i at that time. Steady O: This meas that there is power to your LifeBook otebook ad that it is ready for use. Flashig: This meas that your LifeBook otebook is i Susped mode. Steady Off: This meas that your system is either i Hiberatio mode, or that your LifeBook otebook has bee tured off with the power switch. If you are chargig your battery, the Power idicator symbol will remai o eve if your otebook is shut off. The Power idicator symbol will also remai o if you have either adapter coected ad are shut dow from Widows, but have ot tured off the power switch. Figure 2-9 Status Idicator Pael BATTERY LEVEL INDICATOR The Battery Level idicator states whether or ot the primary Lithium io battery is istalled. I additio, this symbol states how much charge is available withi the istalled battery. The symbol will oly be displayed for a battery that is curretly istalled i your LifeBook otebook. CAUTION A damaged battery must be replaced. (Figure 2-10) 11

LifeBook P1000 Notebook Sectio Two POINT If there is o battery activity, the power adapters are ot coected, ad the power switch is Off, the Battery Level idicator will also be off. BATTERY CHARGING INDICATOR Located to the left of the Battery Level idicator is a small arrow symbol. This symbol states that the battery is beig charged by a exteral source. This idicator operates whether the power switch is i the O or Off positio, ad will flash if the battery is too hot or cold to charge. CAUTION Batteries subjected to shocks, vibratio or extreme temperatures ca be permaetly damaged. HARD DRIVE ACCESS INDICATOR The Hard Drive Access idicator states whether your iteral hard drive is beig accessed. PC CARD ACCESS INDICATOR The PC Card Access idicator states whether or ot your otebook is accessig a PC Card. The idicator will flash if your software tries to access a PC Card, eve if there is o card istalled. (See PC Cards o page 34 for more iformatio) NUMERIC LOCK INDICATOR The Numeric Lock idicator states that the iteral keyboard is set i te-key umeric keypad mode. Gettig to Kow Your Notebook Fuctio Keys x Keyboard USING THE KEYBOARD Your Fujitsu LifeBook otebook has a itegral 82-key keyboard. The keys perform all the stadard fuctios of a 101-key keyboard, icludig the Widows key ad other special fuctio keys. This sectio describes the followig keys. (Figure 2-11) F Key Widows Start Key Numeric Keypad Numeric keypad: Your otebook allows certai keys to serve dual purposes, both as stadard characters ad as umeric ad mathematical keys. The ability to toggle betwee the stadard character ad umerical keys is cotrolled through the [NumLk] key. Cursor keys: Your keyboard cotais four arrow keys for movig the cursor or isertio poit to the right, left, up, or dow withi widows, applicatios ad documets. Fuctio keys: The keys labeled [F1] through [F12], are used i cojuctio with the [F] key to produce special actios that vary depedig o what program is ruig. Widows key: This key works with your Widows operatig system ad fuctios the same as the oscree Start meu butto. NUMERIC KEYPAD Certai keys o the keyboard perform dual fuctios as both stadard character keys ad umeric keypad keys. NumLk ca be activated by pressig the [NumLk] keys. Turig off the NumLk feature is doe the same way. Figure 2-11 Keyboard Cursor Keys Oce this feature is activated you ca eter umerals 0 through 9, perform additio (+), subtractio (-), multiplicatio (*), or divisio (/), ad eter decimal poits (.) usig the keys desigated as te-key fuctio keys. The keys i the umeric keypad are marked o the frot edge of the key to idicate their secodary fuctios. (Figure 2-11) WINDOWS KEY Your LifeBook otebook has oe Widows Start key. The Start key displays the Start meu. This butto fuctios the same as your oscree Start meu butto. (Please refer to your Widows documetatio for additioal iformatio regardig the Widows key.) (Figure 2-11) CURSOR KEYS The cursor keys are the four arrow keys o the keyboard which allow you to move the cursor up, dow, left ad right i applicatios. I programs such as Widows Explorer, it moves the focus (selects the ext item up, dow, left, or right). (Figure 2-11) 13

You should refer to your software documetatio to fid out how these keys are used. (Figure 2-11) The [F] key provides exteded fuctios for the otebook ad is always used i cojuctio with aother key. [F+F3]: Pressig [F3] while holdig [F] will toggle the Audio Mute o ad off. [F+F4]: Pressig [F4] while holdig [F] will toggle the Quick Poit feature o ad off. Note that the [F+F4] combiatio oly works if Maual Settig is selected i the BIOS. (See Eterig the BIOS Setup Utility o page 23) [F+F5]: Pressig [F5] while holdig [F] allows you to toggle betwee video compesatio ad o compesatio. (Video compesatio cotrols spacig o the display. Whe it is eabled, displays with less tha 1024 x 600 pixel resolutio will still cover the etire scree.) [F+F6]: Pressig [F6] repeatedly while holdig [F] will lower the brightess of your display.* [F+F7]: Pressig [F7] repeatedly while holdig [F] will icrease the brightess of the display.* [F+F8]: Pressig [F8] repeatedly while holdig [F] will decrease the volume of your LifeBook otebook.** [F+F9]: Pressig [F9] repeatedly while holdig [F] will icrease the volume of your LifeBook otebook.** [F+F10]: Pressig [F10] while holdig [F] allows you to chage your selectio of where to sed your display video. Each time you press the combiatio of keys you will step to the ext choice. The choices, i order, are: built-i display pael oly, both built-i display pael ad exteral moitor or exteral moitor oly. [F+PgUp], [F+PgD], [F+Home], ad [F+Ed]: These key combiatios allow you to avigate more quickly aroud the display. * There are eight brightess levels. ** There are 17 audio levels. 14

Gettig to Kow Your Notebook Left Butto Right Butto Cursor Cotrol Quick Poit Poitig Device The Quick Poit is built ito your LifeBook otebook. It is used to cotrol the movemet of the cursor to select items o your display pael. The Quick Poit is composed of a cursor cotrol at the ceter of the keyboard ad three buttos o the palm rest of your otebook. The cursor cotrol works the same way a mouse ball does, ad moves the cursor aroud the display. It oly requires light pressure with the tip of your figer, ad the more pressure you use, the faster the cursor will move. The left butto fuctios the same as a left mouse butto while the right butto has the same fuctio as a right mouse butto. Whe used with the cursor cotrol, the middle butto allows you to scroll up ad dow a scree. The actual fuctioality of the buttos may vary depedig o the applicatio that is beig used. (Figure 2-12) CLICKING Clickig meas pushig ad releasig a butto. To leftclick, move the cursor to the item you wish to select, press the left butto oce, ad the immediately release it. To right-click, move the cursor to the item you wish to select, press the bottom butto oce, ad the immediately release it. LifeBook P1000 Notebook Sectio Two QUICK POINT DEVICE CONTROL ADJUSTMENT The Widows Cotrol Pael allows you to customize your Quick Poit with selectios made from withi the Mouse Properties dialog box. There are three aspects of Quick Poit operatio, which you ca adjust: Buttos: This tab lets you set up the buttos for right or left haded operatio, i additio to settig up the time iterval allowed betwee clicks i doubleclickig. Poiters: This tab lets you set up the scheme for the cursor depedig o its fuctioality. Motio: This tab lets you set up a relatio betwee the speed of your figer motio ad the speed of the cursor. It also allows you to eable a Poiter Trail for the cursor arrow. TOUCH SCREEN The itegrated Touch Scree allows you to use either the icluded stylus or your figertip, as a poitig device. You ca use the stylus to click, double-click, drag items ad icos, or to draw like a pe or pecil i applicatios that support this behavior, such as drawig or paitig programs. See the documetatio that came with your applicatio for details. (Figure 2-16) Clickig To left-click, touch the object you wish to select ad the lift the stylus tip immediately. You also have the optio to perform the left-click operatio by tappig lightly with your figer o the Touch Scree oce. (Figure 2-17) To right-click, go to Start --> Programs --> Fujitsu Touch Pael. From that widow, you ca specify a right butto tool by usig the Touch Pael Cofiguratio Cotrol butto prior to the desired right mouse click. It ca be used two ways: by holdig dow the key or by pressig the key oce. You also have the optio to perform the double-click operatio by tappig lightly with your figer o the Touch Scree twice. Oce you have selected the twelve symbols, press the [ENTER] key. POINT If you receive a error message at this poit, you selected fewer tha twelve symbols. Click OK ad begi agai at Step 2. Click Start --> Programs (or All Programs, i Widows XP) --> Fujitsu Touch Pael --> Touch Pael Cofiguratio. 2. Whe the Right Butto Tool scree appears, select either Hold [Ctrl] key dow ad touch the scree or Press [Ctrl] key ad touch the scree. 6. Touch the stylus to various poits o the scree to verify that the scree is correctly calibrated. If you are satisfied with the scree s calibratio, press the [ENTER] key. If you are ot satisfied, press the [HOME] key to begi agai at Step 2. Whe you select Hold [Ctrl]..., the stylus will act as a right mouse butto whe you hold dow the cotrol key while touchig the scree. Whe you select Press [Ctrl]..., the stylus will act as a right mouse butto whe you press the cotrol key before touchig the scree. 3. Click Apply to complete your selectio. Calibratig the Touch Scree I order to esure accurate trackig betwee the stylus ad cursor, you must ru the Touch Scree Calibratio Utility before you use the Touch Scree for the first time, or after you chage the display resolutio. To ru the calibratio utility: 1. O the Start meu, poit to Programs (or All Programs, i Widows XP). Poit to Touch Scree Calibratio Utility. This will ope the Calibratio Utility. 2. Adjust the display of your otebook to a comfortable agle ad fid the red (+) symbol i the upper-left corer of the display. 3. Usig the stylus, firmly touch the scree directly o the (+) symbol. Lift the stylus from the scree ad the target will move to a differet locatio o the scree. 17

POINT Ay software that cotais audio files will also cotai a volume cotrol of its ow. If you istall a exteral audio device that has a idepedet volume cotrol, the hardware volume cotrol ad the software volume cotrol will iteract with each other. It should be oted that if you set your software volume to Off, you will override the exteral volume cotrol settig. CONTROLLING THE VOLUME The volume ca be cotrolled i several differet ways: Volume ca be set from withi the Volume Cotrol o the Taskbar. Volume ca be cotrolled with the [F8] ad [F9] fuctios keys. Pressig [F8] repeatedly while holdig [F] will decrease the volume of your otebook. Pressig [F9] repeatedly while holdig [F] will icrease the volume of your otebook. POINT There are sevetee levels through which the fuctio keys cycle. Volume ca be cotrolled by may volume cotrols that are set withi idividual applicatios. Certai exteral audio devices you might coect to your system may have hardware volume cotrols. Each source discussed above puts a upper limit o the volume level that must the be followed by the other sources. CONNECTING THE POWER ADAPTERS The AC adapter or optioal Auto/Airlie adapter provides power for operatig your otebook ad chargig the batteries. Coectig the AC Adapter 1. Plug the DC cable ito the DC power jack of your LifeBook otebook. 2. Plug the AC adapter ito a AC electrical outlet. (Figure 3-3) Coectig the Optioal Auto/Airlie Adapter 1. Plug the DC cable ito the DC power jack o your otebook. 2. Plug the Auto/Airlie adapter ito the cigarette lighter of a automobile with the igitio key i the O or Accessories positio. OR 3. OPENING THE DISPLAY PANEL Lift the display backwards, beig careful ot to touch the scree, util it is at a comfortable viewig agle. (Figure 3-4) ADJUSTING DISPLAY PANEL BRIGHTNESS Oce you have tured o your LifeBook otebook, you may wat to adjust the brightess level of the scree to a more comfortable viewig level. There are two ways to adjust the brightess, by usig the keyboard or the power maagemet utility. Usig the Keyboard Adjustig the brightess usig the keyboard chages the settig oly temporarily. [F+F6]: Pressig repeatedly will lower the brightess of your display. [F+F7]: Pressig repeatedly will icrease the brightess of the display. Usig the Power Maagemet Utility (Widows 2000 oly) Adjustig the brightess usig the Power Maagemet chages the settig permaetly. 1. Double-click the Battery ico i the lower right corer of your display. This will ope the BatteryAid Properties dialog box. 2. Select the Power Cotrol tab ad adjust your LCD Backlightig to the desired level. 3. Click OK or Apply to permaetly chage the settigs. You may eed to readjust the brightess level periodically depedig o your operatig eviromet. POINT The higher the brightess level, the more power the otebook will cosume ad the faster your batteries will discharge. For maximum battery life, make sure that the brightess is set as low as possible. CLOSING THE DISPLAY PANEL Holdig the edge of your display pael, pull it forward util it is flush with the body of your LifeBook otebook. 22

Gettig Started Startig Your LifeBook Notebook POWER ON Susped/Resume/Power O butto The Susped/Resume/Power O butto is used to tur o your LifeBook otebook from its off state. Oce you have coected your AC adapter or charged the iteral Lithium io Battery, you ca power o your otebook. (See figure 2-7 o page 9 for locatio) POINT Whe you tur o your LifeBook otebook be sure you have a power source. This meas that a battery is istalled ad charged, or that the AC or Auto/Airlie adapter is coected ad has power. Press the Susped/Resume/Power O butto, which is located below the display o the right. Whe you are doe workig you ca either leave your LifeBook otebook i Susped mode, (See Stadby Mode o page 25 for more iformatio), or you ca tur it off. (See Power Off o page 26 for more iformatio) Whe you Power O your LifeBook otebook, it will perform a Power O Self Test (POST) to check the iteral parts ad cofiguratio for correct fuctioality. If a fault is foud, your LifeBook otebook will emit a audio warig ad/or a error message will be displayed. (See Power O Self Test Messages o page 47 for more iformatio) Depedig o the ature of the problem, you may be able to cotiue by startig the operatig system or by eterig the BIOS setup utility ad revisig the settigs. After satisfactory completio of the Power O Self Test (POST), your otebook will load your operatig system. POINT Never tur off your LifeBook otebook durig the Power O Self Test (POST) or it will cause a error message to be displayed whe you tur your LifeBook otebook o the ext time. (See Power O Self Test Messages o page 47 for more iformatio) BOOT SEQUENCE The procedure for startig-up your otebook is termed the Boot sequece ad ivolves your otebook s BIOS. Whe your LifeBook otebook is first tured o, the mai system memory is empty, ad it eeds to fid istructios to start up your otebook. This iformatio is i the BIOS program. Each time you power up or restart your otebook, it goes through a boot sequece which displays a Fujitsu logo util your operatig system is loaded. Durig bootig, your otebook is performig a stadard boot sequece icludig a Power O Self Test (POST). Whe the boot sequece is completed without a failure ad without a request for the BIOS Setup Utility, the system displays the operatig system s opeig scree. The boot sequece is executed whe: You tur o the power to your LifeBook otebook. You restart your otebook from the Widows Shut Dow dialog box. The software iitiates a system restart. Example: Whe you istall a ew applicatio. You reset the system by pressig the three keys [CTRL+ALT+DEL]. BIOS SETUP UTILITY The BIOS Setup Utility is a program that sets up the operatig eviromet for your LifeBook otebook. Your BIOS is set at the factory for ormal operatig coditios, therefore there is o eed to set or chage the BIOS eviromet to operate your otebook. The BIOS Setup Utility cofigures: Device cotrol feature parameters, such as chagig I/O addresses ad boot devices. System Data Security feature parameters, such as passwords. Eterig the BIOS Setup Utility To eter the BIOS Setup Utility do the followig: 1. Tur o or restart your LifeBook otebook. 2. Press the [F2] key oce the Fujitsu logo appears o the scree. This will ope the mai meu of the BIOS Setup Utility with the curret settigs displayed. 3. Widows Registratio: Easy olie registratio for Widows with Microsoft. Widows Licese Agreemet ad Fial Settigs: You have the opportuity to review the Widows Licese Agreemet. LifeBook Registratio: Register your LifeBook otebook i oe of three ways. POINT You may click Cacel at ay time withi this process to shut dow Widows. You may restart this process at ay time i the future, but you must complete it i order to use your computer. Gettig Started Read the istructios o the screes carefully ad fill i the iformatio as directed. You will be asked for such items as the laguage you wish to use, the coutry i which you live, your first ad last ame, ad about how you dial out from where you will be usig your LifeBook otebook. Some of these features are automatic ad eed o user itervetio, such as those for the iteral modem. However, others deped o the parameters you set to best suit your operatig coditios, such as those for the display brightess. Iteral power maagemet for your otebook may be cotrolled from settigs made i your operatig system, pre-budled power maagemet applicatio, or from settigs made i BIOS setup utility. Besides the optios available for coservig battery power, there are also some thigs that you ca do to prevet your battery from ruig dow as quickly. For example, you ca create a appropriate power savig profile, put your otebook ito Susped mode whe it is ot performig a operatio, ad you ca limit the use of high power devices. As with all mobile, battery powered computers, there is a trade-off betwee performace ad power savigs. You ca tell whether or ot your system is i Susped mode by lookig at the Power idicator. (See figure 2-4 o page 6) If the idicator is visible ad ot flashig, your otebook is fully operatioal. If the idicator is both visible ad flashig, your otebook is i Susped mode. If the idicator is ot visible at all, the power is off or your otebook is i Hiberatio mode. STANDBY MODE Stadby (or Susped-to-RAM) mode i Widows saves the cotets of your LifeBook otebook s system memory durig periods of iactivity by maitaiig power to critical parts. This mode will tur off the CPU, the display, the hard drive, ad all of the other iteral compoets except those ecessary to maitai system memory ad allow for restartig. Your otebook ca be put i Stadby mode by: Pressig the Susped/Resume butto whe your system is tured o. Selectig Stadby from the Widows Shut Dow meu. Timig out from lack of activity. Allowig the battery to reach the Low Battery Warig coditio. Your LifeBook otebook s system memory typically stores the file(s) o which you are workig, ope applicatio(s) iformatio, ad ay other data required to support the operatio(s) i progress. Whe you resume operatio from Stadby mode, your otebook will 25

LifeBook P1000 Notebook Sectio Three retur to the poit where it left off. You must use the Susped/Resume butto to resume operatio, ad there must be a adequate power source available, or your otebook will ot resume. POINTS If you are ruig your LifeBook otebook o battery power, be aware that the battery cotiues to discharge while your otebook is i Stadby mode, though ot as fast as whe fully operatioal. Disablig the Susped/Resume butto prevets it from beig used to put your LifeBook otebook i Stadby or Hiberatio modes. The resume fuctio of the butto caot be disabled. If your LifeBook otebook is actively accessig iformatio whe you eter the Stadby or Hiberatio modes, chages to ope files are ot lost. The files are left ope ad memory is kept active durig Stadby mode or the memory is trasferred to the iteral hard drive durig Hiberatio mode. CAUTION The Stadby or Hiberatio modes should ot be used with certai PC Cards. Check your PC Card documetatio for more iformatio. Whe PC Cards or exteral devices are i use, Hiberatio mode caot retur to the exact state prior to suspesio, because all of the peripheral devices will be reiitialized whe the system restarts. HIBERNATION MODE The Hiberatio feature saves the cotets of your LifeBook otebook s system memory to the hard drive as a part of the Susped/Resume mode. You ca eable or disable this feature. Eable or Disable the Hiberatio Feature The default settigs are ot eabled. To eable or disable the Hiberatio feature follow these easy steps: 1. From the Start meu, select Settigs (i Widows 2000 oly), ad the select Cotrol Pael. 2. From the Cotrol Pael select Power Optios. 3. Select the Hiberatio tab. Select the box to eable or disable this feature. 4. Click [Apply] if you have eabled the feature. Usig the Hiberatio Feature 1. From the Start meu, select Settigs (i Widows 2000 oly), ad the select Cotrol Pael. 2. From the Cotrol Pael select Power Optios. 3. Select the Advaced tab. Select Hiberate from the pull dow meu for Power buttos. 4. Click [Apply] if you have eabled the feature. DISPLAY TIMEOUT The Video Timeout is oe of the power maagemet parameters. This feature saves power by turig off the display if there is o keyboard or poiter activity for the user selected timeout period. Ay keyboard or poiter activity will cause the display to restart automatically. This feature is idepedet of the Susped/Resume butto ad ca be eabled ad disabled i Widows ad BIOS setup utility. HARD DISK TIMEOUT The Hard Disk Timeout is aother oe of the power maagemet parameters. This feature saves power by turig off the hard drive if there is o hard drive activity for the user selected timeout period. Ay attempt to access the hard drive will cause it to restart automatically. This feature is idepedet of the Susped/Resume butto ad ca be eabled ad disabled i Widows ad BIOS setup utility. WINDOWS POWER MANAGEMENT Power Maagemet The Power Maagemet ico located i the Widows Cotrol Pael allows you to cofigure some of the power maagemet settigs. For example, you ca use the Power Maagemet to set the timeout values for turig off the display ad hard disks whether you are ruig the otebook o battery power or oe of the adapters. The settigs may also be chaged i the BIOS. RESTARTING THE SYSTEM If your system is o ad you eed to restart it, be sure that you use the followig procedure. 1. Click the Start butto, ad the click Shut Dow. 2. Select the Restart optio from withi the Widows Shut Dow dialog box. 3. Click OK to restart your otebook. Your otebook will shut dow ad the reboot. POINT Turig off your LifeBook otebook without exitig Widows or turig o your otebook withi 10 secods of the otebook beig shut off may cause a error whe you start the ext time. POWER OFF Before turig off the power, check that the Hard Drive, PC Card, ad Floppy Disk Drive Access idicators are all Off. (See figure 2-4 o page 6) If you tur off the power while accessig a disk or PC Card there is a risk of data loss. To esure that your otebook shuts dow without error, use the Widows shut dow procedure. 26

Gettig Started CAUTION Be sure to close all files, exit all applicatios, ad shut dow your operatig system prior to turig off the power. If files are ope whe you tur the power off, you will lose ay chages that have ot bee saved, ad may cause disk errors. Usig the correct procedure to shut dow from Widows allows your otebook to complete its operatios ad tur off power i the proper sequece to avoid errors. The proper sequece is: 1. Click the Start butto, ad the click Shut Dow. 2. Select the Shut Dow optio from withi the Widows Shut Dow dialog box. 3. Click OK to shut dow your otebook.
